The science behind sports and casino promotional events

02.23.2012     02:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article on a company that provides insurance for sports and casino promotions – Hit a Half Court Shot and Win a Free Car is just one of many examples. They actually calculate the odds and probability of each event occurring and pretty much bet against it.

"If we don't have winners, we have no business," Hamman says in a voice that's deep as mud. He pauses, then adds, "But if we have too many winners, we also have no business."

"We had one guy, a Russian immigrant who would travel from college gym to college gym buying off selectors to get himself picked for the basketball-shooting contests," says Hamman. He won as much as $15,000 -- or so he thought. The man was slick enough to befriend the event organizers and pay off the right people to be "randomly selected" but not smart enough to use an alias. When his name showed up on two different claim forms, SCA knew it had a ringer.

Poker community still at war over Full Tilt scandal

02.23.2012     01:07 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It has been six months since Full Tilt Poker had its license taken away and nearly a year since "Black Friday" brought the online poker community to its knees. Here is an update of the current state of things from pokernewsdaily.com. Warning, it contains baseball bats and nuts.

Just last week prior to his deep run at the Latin American Poker Tour Grand Final, Negreanu took it a step further with a video blog, saying that he would have no problem with “Vegas justice” on Lederer in that he should be “bashed in the nuts with a baseball bat.”

Brunson stated, “Was Full Tilt guilty of gross negligence and terrible mismanagement? Yes, of course.” He then attempts to defend two of the alleged perpetrators of the Full Tilt fiasco, Lederer and Ferguson, in a logical look at the situation.

Horizon League Betting News and Game Previews 2-23-2012

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the conference tournament set to begin next Tuesday, February 28, tonight’s Horizon League games are extremely important for seedings. There is a mad scramble for the No. 2 through No. 6 seeds that likely won’t be fully settled tonight. The coveted No. 2 slot means a direct ticket right into the tourney semifinals and No. 3 through No. 6 guarantee first round home floor and with a win, a second round home game as well. There’s a lot of incentive to win for eight of the league’s ten teams so here’s a game-by-game look at what’s at stake tonight. I give an opinion on the games where I feel there may be a slight edge.

Detroit @ Cleveland State – Just two weeks ago, the Vikings were on a five game winning streak and in the driver’s seat for the conference tournament’s No. 1 seed. Their unexpected 59-41 home loss to Valparaiso that night started a horrendous five-game losing streak (both SU and ATS) that has them clinging to hopes of the No. 2 seed. To make that happen, CSU must win against Detroit and Saturday against Wright State, and have Valparaiso win Friday at home against Read more

ESPN the Magazine does story on New York bookie

02.23.2012     09:57 AM     Printer Friendly
ESPN the Magazine, which Chad Millman recently took over as editor, ran a featured story on an unnamed bookie in New York. You can read it here.

"The next week he gambled more and was up about $10,000, but I wasn't worried," Fielding says. He got worried in a hurry, however, when the new client began placing -- and winning -- obscure wagers. Hitting a never-before-heard-of horse for $50,000. Betting that the Buccaneers score under 7.5 points in a game. "Who does that?" says Fielding. Someone who knows more than the bookie, that's who. Fielding shut down the client's account. "It was a lesson learned," he says. "An expensive lesson."

UPDATE

A video clip of BYU Cougars head coach Dave Rose discussing the health of Noah Hartsock and the team's gameplan if he doesn't play. Hartsock (knee) is officially listed as questionable but based on what Rose said, we consider him doubtful at best for tonight's game at Gonzaga.

College Basketball Free Pick: North Texas Mean Green at Arkansas-Little Rock Trojans

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
North Texas at Arkansas-Little Rock -3 O/U 131.5
Recommendation: Arkansas-Little Rock

If a bettor had the foresight to back these two teams all year, he would be smiling all the way to the bank. North Texas has gone 15-5-1 ATS and just had an 11-0-1 pointspread streak snapped with a home loss to Louisiana-Lafayette. UALR has been even better, going 18-6 ATS for the season. The Trojans have been the biggest surprise of the Sun Belt with their 11-3 conference record that includes a win at North Texas in late December. They lead the West Division and can clinch it outright with a win tonight. Little Rock is playing at full strength again after freshman forward Will Neighbour was injured back in late December. He returned two weeks later, but went from playing 30 minutes a game to less than 20 in his first seven games back. He has averaged 30 minutes over the last four games – all wins – and chipped in 16 ppg. Look for the home side to complete the season sweep of the Mean Green tonight.

College Basketball ATS Notes: Bettors jump on Arkansas and OVER vs. Alabama

02.23.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
Alabama at Arkansas -2 O/U 135

Arkansas and the OVER appear to be the hot bets for tonight's SEC action. The Razorbacks opened +1 vs. the Crimson Tide but were bet up as high as -2.5. The total has also crept up to 135 after an opener of 132.5. Arkansas was 17-0 at Bud Walton Arena before losing to Florida 98-68 last Saturday. Alabama will still be without the services of Tony Mitchell and JaMychal Green.

NHL Handicapper Free Play: St. Louis Blues at Nashville Predators

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis at Nashville -130 O/U 5
Recommendation: Nashville

St. Louis heads to Nashville tonight for an always heated Central Division matchup.  This begins an important six games in 10 days road trip for the St. Louis Blues.  Throw in the game versus Boston last night on home ice and the Blues will be playing seven games in just 11 nights!  After a tough loss last night to the Bruins the Blues look to rally the troops on the second part of their back-to-back tonight in Nashville.  Don't be so quick to back the Blues here as they are 4-8 this season on the second half of a back-to-backs.  Recently on February 4th, they faced this same Nashville team on the road after a win the previous night and fell to the Predators in a 3-1 loss.  That brought the season series to a perfect 4-0 for Nashville against the Blues.  Nashville has made an early splash at the trade deadline picking up Hal Gill which will surely help their defensive core.  Nashville has surprised many this season as they have gone 17-8 since Christmas break playing against some of the stiffest competition in the NHL over that course of time.  Read more

NCAA Basketball Betting Trend Update: Murray State -2 first half vs. Tennessee State

02.23.2012     07:07 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

UPDATE

Murray State at Tennessee State

Our Tennessee State 1st half/2nd half trend should be in play tonight as the Tigers play host to Murray State. Since we last spoke, TSU lost two more first halves but stormed back to win outright and cash back-to-back second half tickets. TSU is on a 3-13 ATS 1st half/14-2 ATS 2nd half run. There is really no explanation for these results but clearly Tennessee State is aware of its come-from-behind ways. Tonight, Murray State is downplaying the revenge angle as TSU handed the Racers their lone loss of the season. Both teams have the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the OVC Tournament locked up. You should be able to find Murray State -2 for the first half.

Grantland goes behind the scenes at LVH sportsbook

02.23.2012     06:49 AM     Printer Friendly
The Grantland Blog did a behind-the-scenes look at Las Vegas' LVH Sportsbook. Here are some of the highlights:

1. Nobody's bet on the Charlotte Bobcats. Nobody

2. A lot of people are betting on the Los Angeles Angels.

3. The book made a small profit on the Super Bowl, even though the combination of a Giants win with the under was its worst possible outcome.

4. Every sportsbook director in Vegas hated that safety.

5. The LVH can't win a coin-toss bet.

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Duke takes early money in revenge spot vs. Florida State

02.23.2012     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Duke -2 at Florida State O/U 140

The early money has come in on Duke as the Blue Devils travel to Tallahassee in search of revenge over Florida State. The game opened a pick 'em with Duke now a 2-point favorite. Duke and FSU are both 10-2 in ACC play and trail North Carolina (11-2) by a half game.

"They might have a little big of an edge from the standpoint that they've been here in these types of games over and over again," Hamilton said. "Because of the success that they've had over the last 50, 60, 70 years and … the tradition they've been able to build, they've been kind of earned the right to be everybody's homecoming. They generate that kind of enthusiasm and hype regardless where they go."

WCC Betting Notes: BYU's Rose says Cougs need win vs. Zags to secure at-large

02.23.2012     06:33 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
BYU at Gonzaga -6 O/U 146.5

BYU (23-6) saying that it needs a win at Gonzaga to secure an NCAA Tournament berth. The Cougars won the first meeting, 83-73.

“We gotta win the game on Thursday,” BYU coach Dave Rose said flatly this week, when asked if the Cougars have to win the conference tournament to get in the NCAA field.

A couple injuries of note as BYU's Noah Hartsock (knee, 17.3 ppg, 1.7 bpg) is questionable while Matt Carlino (knee, 12.9 ppg, 4.6 apg) was upgraded to probable.
