Saturday NCAA Basketball Free Pick: UW-Green Bay Phoenix at UIC Flames

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UW-Green Bay -3 at UIC O/U 131
Recommendation: Over

Don't project to see much intensity in this early afternoon start between Green Bay and UIC. The Phoenix will be playing for a first round home game but I've come to realize that rising to the occasion for a seed rather than say a berth, is vastly overrated. The Flames are going to honor a few seniors, in front of a few fans, roll the ball out and try to have some fun. UWGB is one of the few teams in the Horizon that actively looks to push the pace with over 65 possessions per game. Their offense has really come together the back half of the season with 70+ point efforts in seven of their last nine games. UIC no question struggles to score, but it is offset by the 1.08 points per possession they allow. I think the casual atmosphere will make for a quicker pace and less than stellar defense which puts us on the over.

NBA Rising Stars Challenge: Team Shaq, Lin betting favorites over Team Chuck

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Team Chuck vs. Team Shaq -5.5 O/U 275.5

More details on tonight's BBVA Rising Stars Challenge. Apparently, some of the players participating in the event are actually motivated – or at least claim to be. Team Chuck's John Wall, not used to the thrill of victory while playing for the Wizards, says this is an opportunity for him to make a statement. Team Shaq's Kemba Walker shared those same feelings. Walker of course is nearing the one-year anniversary of leading UConn to a National Championship. A run in which the Huskies won six games in 19 days. He's won four games since then with the Charlotte Bobcats. Walker will be joined by fellow guards Ricky Rubio and Jeremy Lin on Team Shaq. Speaking of Lin, you'll be shocked to know that he didn't just show up out of the blue but rather worked pretty hard to get to this point. Lin is +500 to win the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Boston Celtics enter All-Star break on 1-8 ATS run

02.24.2012     11:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good recap of the first of the season for the Boston Celtics. The Celtics (15-17 SU, 13-19 ATS) are currently in 8th place in the Eastern Conference playoff race. They covered just one of their last nine games prior to the All-Star break.

The Celtics offense has struggled in the half court this season. Boston ranks 21st in points per play (0.853) in the half court, down from 0.927 points per play last season, good for 11th in the league. At the same time, their transition offense (0.907) is putting up similar numbers compared to last season (0.972).

A lot of people are apparently betting on Danica Patrick to win the Daytona 500

A Tweet from LVH Sportsbook director Jay Kornegay on the Daytona 500 betting love for Danica Patrick. Most offshore books don't even list her among the potential winners (Field Bets around +1800). Bovada has her at 40-1.

NCAA Basketball Gambling: Butler needs win for Horizon Tourney No. 2 seed

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Butler -1.5 at Valparaiso O/U 127

Crucial game for Butler tonight as a win over Valpo would earn the Bulldogs the much coveted No. 2 seed for the Horizon League Tournament. The Crusaders have already locked up the regular season crown and No. 1. seed. Basketball Prospectus talks about the legitimacy of Butler's current late season run.

Probably not. At the risk of being tautological, the thing I liked about last year’s late-season surge was that last year’s team was better. Last year’s team had Matt Howard and Shelvin Mack. Last year’s team outscored the Horizon by a very respectable 0.09 points per trip.

This year’s team, conversely, will end the year outscoring a slightly weaker Horizon League by Read more

College Basketball Betting Trends: Michigan State a moneymaker in the second half

I stumbled upon this hidden gem of a betting trend: Michigan State is an amazing 21-1-1 ATS in the second half of its games this season. Impressive considering that in some of those, the adjusted 2nd half line was more than the game line. No doubt this success for the Spartans can be attributed to Tom Izzo's ability to make adjustments as well as the team's desire to defend on a nightly basis.

The Fundamentals of College Basketball Handicapping: A short list for success

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Every basketball bettor knows the importance of defense and rebounding, but many are not capable of combining other important credentials to deliver consistent pointspread prognosis winners. I’ve written numerous articles on college basketball and have noted many fundamental facets in reviewing match-ups and stats. When shots are not falling, teams that lack strength in defense and rebounding will suffer. And when three-point shots are hitting the rim and not the net, it’s often disaster for many teams. Witness some of our recent last second and close ATS losses in which our teams were terrible shooting from beyond the arch, DePaul (6-of-31, 19%) vs. St. John’s and Texas A&M (5-of-17, 29%) vs. Missouri.  A closer examination shows these teams have deficiencies in the areas discussed.

You can make other arguments following a game as to why your team did not cover. However, if you can combine solid defense stats, specifically field goal defense, along with strength in rebounding and add in the ability to handle and take care of the basketball with a solid assist-to-turnover ratio, you have quality teams than can compete against the Read more

NBA Handicapping: Philadelphia 76ers limp into All-Star break

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Philadelphia 76ers come limping into the All-Star break losers of five straight to go with an ATS run of 1-8. Typically a max-effort squad, they could certainly use the rest.

"I wouldn’t say it’s physical fatigue, I would say it’s mental fatigue," Young said of the bad run of games. "The back-to-backs, triples, doubles. The schedule has been ridiculous. This season has been crazy. We’re all just looking forward to this break right now."

Big East Gambling Notes: West Virginia tries again for key victory

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Marquette at West Virginia -1 O/U 144

All right, let's try this again. Faced with what many were calling a "must win" at Notre Dame on Wednesday, West Virginia lost 71-44. Now the Mountaineers square off against a surging Marquette squad that has won 11 of 12, including recent wins by margins of 14, 17, 15 and 17.

"Obviously, you'd like to have more than one day to prepare," said West Virginia head coach Bob Huggins. "They've just done a great job. They're constantly in attack mode."

"When you score a basket and you want to look at your mother and wave and they'll run by you," Huggins said. "They're extremely aggressive, and they've got a lot of interchangeable players and (head coach Buzz Williams) does a great job of rotating those Read more

Nevertheless, we feel obligated to inform you that Team Shaq is a 4-point favorite over Team Chuck. The total was bet down – hold on, while we stop laughing – off of an opener of 272 to 271.5. Here are the rosters. FYI, Jeremy Lin is on Team Shaq for all you NBA conspiracy theorists out there.
