NBA Handicapping: First half Against The Spread winners and losers

02.26.2012     08:03 AM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are many words to throw around for the first half of this NBA lockout shortened season.  It certainly hasn’t followed suit from previous campaigns, with many adjustments needed to be made.  Let’s be honest, handicapping a team playing three straight days is a completely new science.  Let’s take a look at the teams that performed the best against the spread in the first half of the season, while also noting the bottom feeders.

In pretty amazing fashion, if you take the best straight up records from the Eastern and Western Conference last year and the NBA champs, you come up with the top three ATS squads through the halfway point of 2011-12.  It is almost impossible to convey how incredible that is because beating the books is rarely if ever that simple or easy.  The San Antonio Spurs lead the way with a 21-13 ATS mark, followed by the Chicago Bulls at 21-14, and finally the Dallas Mavericks at 20-14.  The Mavericks are probably the most interesting case after opening the season with two embarrassing losses on their home court.  Of course, those results make sense to a large degree with continuity, Read more

Big Ten Gambling Notes: Ohio State-Wisconsin total steamed OVER

02.26.2012     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wisconsin at Ohio State -9 O/U 121

Rematch of a bloodbath that took place in Madison back in early February with Ohio State (-3.5) winning 58-52. The total in that game closed 118. Today's total opened 117.5 but has been bet up to as high as 121.5. OSU has played a handful of high scoring games within conference play but against better competition (i.e. teams that defend), the results have been very Big Ten-esque: vs. Michigan L 51-56, vs. Michigan State L 48-58, at Wisconsin W 58-52, vs. Michigan W 64-49. The Badgers obviously out for redemption for the loss but the Buckeyes will be primed for Senior Day with underrated William Buford playing his final home game. Read more

PAC-12 Betting Notes: Oregon State small favorites over Oregon in Civil War rematch

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Oregon at Oregon State -3.5 O/U 152

Since winning in Eugene on January 29, Oregon State has fallen on hard times with a 1-5 SU, 1-5 ATS run. Head coach Craig Robinson feels that the "team basketball" being played earlier in the year has disappeared and too many guys are trying the do too much.

“Guys started trying to make plays for themselves,’’ Brandt said. “Team chemistry broke down, but I don’t think it’s a permanent thing. Everyone is as close as we were before that. Team chemistry is still there.’’

Meanwhile, Oregon still feels it has a shot to earn at at-large berth despite currently residing in fourth place of the eighth-ranked conference in the country (according to Ken Pom).

Saturday NCAA Basketball Free Pick: UW-Green Bay Phoenix at UIC Flames

UW-Green Bay -3 at UIC O/U 131
Recommendation: Over

Don't project to see much intensity in this early afternoon start between Green Bay and UIC. The Phoenix will be playing for a first round home game but I've come to realize that rising to the occasion for a seed rather than say a berth, is vastly overrated. The Flames are going to honor a few seniors, in front of a few fans, roll the ball out and try to have some fun. UWGB is one of the few teams in the Horizon that actively looks to push the pace with over 65 possessions per game. Their offense has really come together the back half of the season with 70+ point efforts in seven of their last nine games. UIC no question struggles to score, but it is offset by the 1.08 points per possession they allow. I think the casual atmosphere will make for a quicker pace and less than stellar defense which puts us on the over.
