College Basketball Betting Tips: Points per possession scored and allowed

03.05.2012     02:23 PM     Printer Friendly
John Gasaway's final regular season points per possession scored and allowed differential. Worth a bookmark for handicapping these upcoming tournaments. One team that stands out is Memphis' +0.22. The next closest team in C-USA is Tulsa at +0.07. Since mysteriously losing to UTEP at home, the Tigers closed out the regular season with wins by 23, 20, 29 and 12. Memphis hosts the C-USA Tournament and is a -200 favorite according to The Greek.

Atlantic-10 Tournament Odds: Temple and Saint Louis co-betting favorites

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Odds to win the Atlantic-10 Tournament courtesy of The Greek. For the sixth straight season, the event will take place in Atlantic City. Temple had won three straight titles prior to last season's Richmond win. The tournament is notorious for upsets with the No. 1 seed reaching the finals only once in the last five years. The last five title game matchups in terms of seeds have been: No. 4 vs. No. 3; No. 5 vs. No 2; No. 4 vs. No. 7; No 1. vs. No. 3; and No. 9 vs. No. 3. The better seed however won all five contests.

College Basketball Betting Free Play: Gonzaga Bulldogs vs. St. Mary's Gaels

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Gonzaga vs. St. Mary's
Recommendation: Over 61.5 1st half

I respect the defensive numbers Gonzaga has posted this year (0.93 points per possession vs. WCC) as well as St. Mary's lower-the-usual pace numbers over the past month (56-64 possessions in eight straight games) but were also dealing with the top two offenses in the conference and both are not shy about taking advantage of fast break opportunities. In the last 10 games in this series, only once did we see a halftime score fall below 63 points. And two of those contests where in this exact setting; the conference championship title game (39-34 and 38-25). This is the fourth straight year at this venue, the Orleans Arena, so both teams are obviously comfortable with the rims and backdrop. And both factors that often tell bettors there are tight rims – free throw and three-point shooting – have been fairly average with six games producing a combined 66% from the foul line and 38% from three-point land. This projects to be a close game so there is always the potential for it to turn into a grind late so let's take advantage of the low total and play over first half.

Big East Conference Tournament Gambling Preview

Big East Conference Tournament
Madison Square Garden / New York, NY / Host: St. John’s

Favorite - #1 Syracuse
The Orange have been the class of the league from start to finish. On a neutral court, my power ratings have them three points better than the next closest Big East team (Marquette) which gives them the third highest differential of the six BCS conferences. They’re going to be difficult to beat in this tournament because of their ability to adapt to any style. They’re not a great half court offensive team but they’re good enough and their 2-3 zone defense is so long and active that it can win games for them. In a transition style they’re as fast and efficient as any conference team including Marquette. The best way to defeat them is to force them into playing half court offense, allow just one shot and then rebound and play aggressive transition offense. It’s easier said and very difficult to do, but slowing them down and getting easy baskets before their defense can set up is necessary. All that said, and as good as Syracuse is, they do enter this tournament on a poor 4-8 ATS run Read more

Mountain West Conference Tournament Odds: UNLV hosts, SDSU earns No. 1 seed

03.05.2012     12:23 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Mountain West Conference Tournament odds courtesy of The Greek. The event kicks off on Thursday at Las Vegas' Thomas & Mack Center. Since 2007, there have been three No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchups. No seed below No. 4 has made the finals since 2006 when No. 7 Wyoming lost to No. 1 San Diego State. That also marked the last time a No. 1 seed won the tournament with No. 2 winning four times and No. 4 once. Interesting that the No. 6 seed has upset the No. 3 seed three of the last five years. Despite hosting the tournament over the last few years, UNLV is 3-3 SU and 2-4 ATS its last four games.

Mountain West Tournament Odds
UNLV +125
San Diego State +175
New Mexico +200
Colorado State +1000
Wyoming +1500
Field (TCU, Boise, Air Force) +800

Indiana at Chicago -7 O/U 189.5

Chicago Bulls point guard Derrick Rose has forgotten the loss to Indiana back in late January. The Pacers not only won at the United Center but weren't shy about celebrating the accomplishment after the game.

"I'll never forget how they celebrated just from winning this game," Rose told reporters after the loss in January. "I can't wait to play them again."

"I haven't forgotten about anything," Rose said Sunday night after a win over the Philadelphia 76ers. "I remember that.

Who has what it takes to win the 2012 National Championship Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In Part I of this article last week, I took a basic look at the profile of the past 14 NCAA champions. From that profile, I was able to make a short list of potential champs in 2012, consisting of the following 14 teams: Duke, North Carolina, Syracuse, Marquette, Georgetown, Louisville, Michigan State, Ohio State, Indiana, Kansas, Missouri, Baylor, Kentucky and Florida.

I’ll wager dollars to donuts that the 2012 champion is one of these teams. The next step, of course, is to eliminate teams one by one, slowly but surely working our way towards the eventual national champ.

The first step in the elimination process is to look at the team’s records away from home. The NCAA championship is not won on a team’s home floor. Even with a favorable location one weekend, a team is still going to have to win four ‘neutral site’ games in order to cut down the nets in New Orleans on the first Monday in April. And the best predictive evidence for future Read more

Bettor makes $100K horse wager but cancels at last second

03.05.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
Weird situation at Arkansas' Oaklawn Race Track saw a simulcast bettor from California cancel a $100K wager right before post. It caused a huge disturbance in the betting pools but no foul play was discovered. The horse that was originally wagered on finished last.

“He placed the bet early, watched a race on the simulcast, and didn’t like what he saw,” Marten said, when asked what reason the bettor gave for cancelling the bet. “Something with the track, and also a further review of the past performances. This is someone who has made a lot of big bets before, large bets that he hasn’t cancelled.”

Drexel vs. VCU

VCU and Drexel meet in tonight's Colonial Athletic Association Championship in Richmond, Va. The two teams met once during the regular season with Drexel winning at home 64-58 as a 1-point underdog. VCU shot 9-of-20, 45% from the free throw line in the loss. After starting the season 2-4, Drexel has won 25 of 26. VCU has won 16 of 17. The loser of this game will likely be put squarely on the NCAA Tournament bubble.

Victor Chandler talks about the state of match fixing

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
British sportsbook giant Victor Chandler on match fixing how dirty the cricket betting markets can be.

"At least 10 years ago we steered clear of taking large bets from Indians and Pakistanis on cricket," he says. "The suspicion was that they seemed to know more than we did, and we got our bottom smacked a few times, in a big way. In those days it was more on the result of the match, but the markets they offer in India now are unbelievable, betting on each ball. There's a huge illegal bookmaking business there, which could be taxed and regulated..."

"The lower levels of tennis are a bit dangerous, and we've seen some large bets in eastern Europe," he says. "But in recent years there's been very little to worry about. Football... it's very hard to influence a game, but if we had any suspicions then we as an industry would be shouting very loudly. I mean, one looks at the Italian leagues at the end of a season, when games tend to end in draws if they want them to, but we build that in to
