Big East Tournament Betting Trends: First round teams vs. Bye teams

03.06.2012     01:49 PM     Printer Friendly
The Big East Tournament started including all 16 teams back in 2009. Here are the betting numbers for those teams "rested and ready" vs. teams that played in the opening round. Despite the rest and extra time to prepare, the bye teams have performed worse each of the last three tournaments. Not a lot of data to work with but oddsmakers are once again likely to shade the lines in favor of those that didn't play in the first round.

Second round top seed
2009: 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS
2010: 3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS
2011: 2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS

MLB Betting News: Decline in scoring attributed to umpires

03.06.2012     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from baseballanalytics.org on perhaps the real reasoning for the decline in offense across the board in MLB. The “disappearance” of steroids is what most point to as the source but one study shows that umpires may be the main culprits. It turns out the over the last four seasons, umps are calling more and more strikes – almost as if they are carrying out what it clearly states in the rule book.

In 2008, umpires called a strike 74.5% of the time that a hitter took a pitch that was thrown within the strike zone. By 2011, that called strike rate on pitches taken in the zone was over six percent higher as compared to '08:

Lawmakers push for sports betting at California race tracks

College Basketball Gambling: NCAA reveals science behind tournament selection

03.06.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The NCAA normally doesn't like to show its card but it for whatever reason decided to release a seven-page document titled: PRINCIPLES AND PROCEDURES FOR ESTABLISHING THE BRACKET. One of the more interesting notes was that the committee tries to avoid sending teams cross country two consecutive years. They also want to avoid situations where "home crowd disadvantage" could take place; i.e. shipping Michigan to Columbus. None of this is really groundbreaking stuff, but it is always nice to hear from the man behind the curtain.

NBA Betting Notes: Average minutes per game for starters

03.06.2012     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Good article from denverstiffs.com breaking down the NBA's crazy schedule and what teams are doing, if anything at all, to budget the minutes of their starters. In terms of teams in the playoff race, San Antonio’s starters average the fewest (27.48 per game) while Memphis' average the most (33.34).

NBA Handicapping: Fatigued and banged up, Dallas plays host to New York

03.06.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York at Dallas -2.5 O/U 191.5

Tough spot for Dallas after losing a hard fought game to Oklahoma City last night. Veterans Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion and Jason Terry all logged 36+ minutes. More concerning is the status of center Brendan Hawyood who sprained his ankle in the loss. Haywood is listed as doubtful leaving the Mavs extremely thin in the front court.

The loss was the Mavs' sixth in eight games and tonight's game, the sixth during this nine-in-12 stretch, is the last before Dallas embarks on its lone back-to-back-to-back of the season starting Thursday at Phoenix.

Mountain West coaches none too pleased about UNLV hosting tourney

03.06.2012     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Various Mountain West Conference coaches voiced their displeasure over the perceived advantage host UNLV has over the remainder of the field. The Rebels enter this year's tourney with a 16-0 mark on their home floor. But despite the complaints, the postseason results historically show that the Thomas & Mack Center hasn't been the death trap some are making it out to be. After a three-year stretch in Denver, this will mark the sixth straight year the MWC Tournament will take place in Las Vegas. The Rebels have won only two of the last five titles – the last coming back in 2008. Interesting the San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher is one of those complaining – his Aztecs have won two straight titles with two wins over UNLV.

“I think it’s absolutely unfair,” San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said during Monday’s MW coaches’ teleconference. “It’s not done in any other major conference. ... It makes no sense, other than it’s good for the TV when it pans to the crowd and shows all those Read more

NBA Handicapping: Miami Heat expect to have Bosh back in the lineup

03.06.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New Jersey at Miami

The Miami Heat return home after back-to-back losses to close out a short west coast road trip. Chris Bosh expects to return to the lineup after missing three games due to a death in the family. Head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that Bosh's absence hurt the team on both ends of the floor.

“No question about it, Chris Bosh is a major component to what we do on both ends of the court,” Spoelstra said. “That’s why we don’t listen to anybody when they talk about Chris’s importance or value. He’s one of the best players in this league, but more importantly, he has a great impact on how we play, and he settles us.”

College Basketball Betting: Western Kentucky battles North Texas for Sun Belt crown

03.06.2012     06:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Western Kentucky vs. North Texas

The No. 5 seed will take on the No. 7 seed in tonight's Sun Belt Conference Championship. North Texas defeated Arkansas State while Western Kentucky pulled off another upset with a victory over No. 3 Denver. The once proud Western Kentucky program hit near rock bottom earlier in the year and went so far as to fire head coach Ken McDonald after a 5-11 start. Ray Harper took over but the losing continued. The Hilltoppers were at one point 6-15 overall and 2-6 in Sun Belt play. But things started to turn around after a few wins, including a big victory over Middle Tennessee in the season finale. From there, three straight coin-flip wins in the conference tournament and they find themselves Read more
