Arena Football Gambling: Handicapper Teddy Covers gears up for 2012 campaign

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Arena Football League has been in existence since the 1980’s, but we’ve seen quite a bit of turmoil around the league in recent years.  The entire 2009 season was cancelled as the league “restructured” its finances. When the league returned in 2010, it was a merger between the AFL and their minor league franchises, from a league called AF2. Several of the smaller market teams crashed and burned – locations like Bossier, Louisiana and Huntsville, Alabama simply couldn’t draw enough support to keep the teams profitable.

In comparison to recent offseasons, the 2011-12 offseason was rather calm. No new teams entered the league. No existing teams folded. The only difference, franchise-wise, between this year and last year is that the Tulsa Talons moved to San Antonio. However, storm clouds are lurking on the horizon…clouds that could find themselves producing a downpour in a matter of days.

Numerous published reports have come out this week, talking about the possibility of a player strike before the season kicks off on Friday night. AFL non-quarterbacks make $400 per game for a 20 week season, with each team getting Read more

College Basketball Handicapping: SEC one of the slowest conferences in the country

03.07.2012     01:30 PM     Printer Friendly
Article from Basketball Prospectus on how slow of a conference the SEC has become. There are 33 "conferences" according to Ken Pom – including Independents and the Great West (whatever that is). The SEC's 63.3 possessions per game ranks 29th. This after ranking first in 2009 and fifth in 2010. Below are the SEC's stats as a whole in conference play. The only thing they have to brag about is blocks – thanks in large part to a one Mr. Anthony Davis.

PAC-12 Tournament Gambling Preview

03.07.2012     12:56 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Of all the major conference tournaments in play this week, the PAC-12 has the weakest field and the least fan support.  It’s been a second consecutive down year for the PAC-12.  Last year, the league sent only three teams to the Big Dance, all seeded #5 or higher.  This year, the at-large bid situation is even worse.  The PAC-12 doesn’t have a single team that is comfortably in the Big Dance, with Cal, Oregon and Washington still needing wins to secure potential bids.  So while the Staples Center will be half empty for most of the weekend, in a league without a clear favorite to win the title, the PAC-12’s automatic bid from winning the conference championship title just might be the only bid this league gets in 2012.

The odds clearly show how deep this field is, and how weak the top teams truly are.   Cal and Washington are the two favorites, despite both teams coming up short in their ‘must win’ games for the conference title last weekend.  The Bears lost back-to-back games at Colorado and Stanford, negating their chance to win the regular season title.  Meanwhile, the Huskies lost at UCLA, Read more

NBA Handicapping: Amazingly, the New York Knicks are having chemistry issues

03.07.2012     09:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
An experiment that while sexy on paper looks to be doomed as the New York Knicks are reportedly having chemistry issues. Carmelo Anthony was benched during last night's 95-85 loss at Dallas. Anthony finished the game 2-of-12 from the floor for six points. His offensive numbers while on the court with Jeremy Lin are awful. Anthony said after the game that going from being the main distributor (i.e. shot taker) to waiting for the ball to come his way has been a difficult adjustment. Overall, clearly not a good situation as the Knicks are on a 3-5 SU/ATS slide.

Carmelo Anthony‘s PER with Jeremy Lin off court this season: 21.8. Carmelo’s PER with Lin ON court? 12.2…. Knicks’ offensive efficiency (pts per 100 trips): Lin on/Carmelo off? 105.0. Lin off/Carmelo on? 98.8. Both on? 97.9.

Big East Tournament Free Pick: Villanova Wildcats vs. South Florida Bulls

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Villanova vs. South Florida -2.5 O/U 120
Recommendation: South Florida

Don’t be fooled by Villanova’s win over Rutgers, their season is going to end today.  Prior to that victory, the Wildcats were on a 2-8 SU and 1-7-1 ATS slide. South Florida (19-12, 12-6 Big East) dominated Villanova this season with their signature defense resulting in a pair of 65-51 and 74-57 wins. South Florida’s last eight games to close the Big East season saw them hold opponents to 50, 51, 45, 56, 47, 51, 48, and 51 points. The Bulls went 6-2 ATS in those games led by the league’s no. 1 scoring defense (57 ppg) and field goal defense (38%), and now face a ‘Nova offense that tied for last in the league in field goal shooting (40%).  Villanova also takes plenty of long range shots, but USF holds Big East foes to just 28% shooting from the arch. Add in a rebounding advantage for the Bulls and this becomes a defensive dandy at a fair price Read more

Northern Nevada adds sports betting kiosks

Just in time for March Madness. Various Northern Nevada sports bars are now offering Leroy's betting kiosks.

"Guys like me can come in here to their local tavern, make a bet, watch the game, have a drink, have some food, and hopefully win," Golden Gaming's Jimmy Wadhams said.

"As basketball's gearing up and getting a little bit crazier, in March Madness fever, people are asking more about the kiosk and how they sign up and place bets," Wexelblatt said.

Big XII Tournament Gambling Notes: Oklahoma State short on bodies vs. Texas Tech

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas Tech vs. Oklahoma State -8 O/U 122.5

Worth pointing out the injury situation for Oklahoma State heading into tonight's Big XII Tournament first round game against Texas Tech. The only problem with a fade of the Cowboys is that the Red Raiders are really bad.

Along with Jurick, OSU has also lost Jean-Paul Olukemi (torn ACL in right knee) and Le'Bryan Nash (fractured left hand) to season-ending injuries.

Add in the two point guard departures (Fred Gulley and Reger Dowell), and there is a noticeable vacancy in production.

When healthy and present, those five players combined for 58 starts, 33.8 points per game and 18.9 rebounds this season.

On Wednesday, it will be blank across the board.

College Basketball Betting Tips: Things to look for in second half wagers

03.07.2012     06:36 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

Wanted to point out this halftime box score (see below) of the Eastern Washington-Montana game. Everyone has their own philosophies for making halftime bets but I thought I'd share a few of my own as far as what I look for. For starters, I leaned Eastern Washington +10.5 as Montana's home court, while tough, is often inflated. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to watch the game – something I usually like to do when betting halftimes. But in this instance, I was very familiar with both sides and was able to track the contest using live stats.

copy_montana_halftime.JPG

In the first half, Montana obviously couldn't shoot straight while Eastern Washington was at 50%. This is already out of the norm as Montana defends and EWU typically does not. And this late in the season, you are what you are, especially on defense. So with five minutes to play, Eastern took an 11-point lead. It was a big moment because down 10 or more at half likely keeps me off of any 2nd half play with Montana. But the Grizzlies knocked down a shot, and a few more, and went into the break only down 5 – a nice swing in momentum which is always nice to have. But while the margin was more Read more

Big East Tournament Betting Trends: First round teams vs. Bye teams

03.06.2012     01:49 PM     Printer Friendly
The Big East Tournament started including all 16 teams back in 2009. Here are the betting numbers for those teams "rested and ready" vs. teams that played in the opening round. Despite the rest and extra time to prepare, the bye teams have performed worse each of the last three tournaments. Not a lot of data to work with but oddsmakers are once again likely to shade the lines in favor of those that didn't play in the first round.

Second round top seed
2009: 4-0 SU, 3-1 ATS
2010: 3-1 SU, 2-2 ATS
2011: 2-2 SU, 1-3 ATS

MLB Betting News: Decline in scoring attributed to umpires

03.06.2012     01:15 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from baseballanalytics.org on perhaps the real reasoning for the decline in offense across the board in MLB. The “disappearance” of steroids is what most point to as the source but one study shows that umpires may be the main culprits. It turns out the over the last four seasons, umps are calling more and more strikes – almost as if they are carrying out what it clearly states in the rule book.

In 2008, umpires called a strike 74.5% of the time that a hitter took a pitch that was thrown within the strike zone. By 2011, that called strike rate on pitches taken in the zone was over six percent higher as compared to '08:

College Basketball Gambling: NCAA reveals science behind tournament selection

03.06.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The NCAA normally doesn't like to show its card but it for whatever reason decided to release a seven-page document titled: PRINCIPLES AND PROCEDURES FOR ESTABLISHING THE BRACKET. One of the more interesting notes was that the committee tries to avoid sending teams cross country two consecutive years. They also want to avoid situations where "home crowd disadvantage" could take place; i.e. shipping Michigan to Columbus. None of this is really groundbreaking stuff, but it is always nice to hear from the man behind the curtain.

NBA Handicapping: Fatigued and banged up, Dallas plays host to New York

03.06.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York at Dallas -2.5 O/U 191.5

Tough spot for Dallas after losing a hard fought game to Oklahoma City last night. Veterans Dirk Nowitzki, Shawn Marion and Jason Terry all logged 36+ minutes. More concerning is the status of center Brendan Hawyood who sprained his ankle in the loss. Haywood is listed as doubtful leaving the Mavs extremely thin in the front court.

The loss was the Mavs' sixth in eight games and tonight's game, the sixth during this nine-in-12 stretch, is the last before Dallas embarks on its lone back-to-back-to-back of the season starting Thursday at Phoenix.

Mountain West coaches none too pleased about UNLV hosting tourney

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Various Mountain West Conference coaches voiced their displeasure over the perceived advantage host UNLV has over the remainder of the field. The Rebels enter this year's tourney with a 16-0 mark on their home floor. But despite the complaints, the postseason results historically show that the Thomas & Mack Center hasn't been the death trap some are making it out to be. After a three-year stretch in Denver, this will mark the sixth straight year the MWC Tournament will take place in Las Vegas. The Rebels have won only two of the last five titles – the last coming back in 2008. Interesting the San Diego State head coach Steve Fisher is one of those complaining – his Aztecs have won two straight titles with two wins over UNLV.

“I think it’s absolutely unfair,” San Diego State coach Steve Fisher said during Monday’s MW coaches’ teleconference. “It’s not done in any other major conference. ... It makes no sense, other than it’s good for the TV when it pans to the crowd and shows all those Read more

New Jersey at Miami

The Miami Heat return home after back-to-back losses to close out a short west coast road trip. Chris Bosh expects to return to the lineup after missing three games due to a death in the family. Head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that Bosh's absence hurt the team on both ends of the floor.

“No question about it, Chris Bosh is a major component to what we do on both ends of the court,” Spoelstra said. “That’s why we don’t listen to anybody when they talk about Chris’s importance or value. He’s one of the best players in this league, but more importantly, he has a great impact on how we play, and he settles us.”
