ACC Betting Notes: Will North Carolina, Williams take conference tourney seriously?

03.09.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Maryland vs. North Carolina -15

Here is another legendary coach in charge of a legendary program that clearly doesn't put too much emphasis on conference tournaments. During his tenure at North Carolina, Roy Williams is 11-6 SU and 2-15 ATS (a few games could be considered pushes) in the ACC Tournament. Yet like Izzo, Williams is saying all the right things heading in to today’s first round matchup against Maryland.

“I hate packing three suits and have them get wrinkled and not have to wear them,” Tar Heels coach Roy Williams said.

College Basketball Betting: Indiana loses starter Jones in win over Penn State

Wisconsin vs. Indiana -2

Tough loss for Indiana last night as guard Verdell Jones went down with a knee injury and will likely miss the rest of the season. Jones was more of a secondary player (7.5 ppg) but had started 23 of 32 games. The Hoosiers seemed pretty emotional after the loss of a comrade.

"We have a really close team, and when somebody goes down like that, you just feel helpless," said IU freshman center Cody Zeller. "You can bet there's a lot of prayers going out his way tonight."

Big Ten Gambling Notes: Will Michigan State, Izzo take conference tourney seriously?

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Iowa vs. Michigan State -11

Since winning the Big Ten Tournament and National Championship back in 2000, Michigan State has been notorious for not putting much effort in these conference tourneys. Despite being one of, if not the best program in the league over the last decade plus, Tom Izzo's teams are an uninspired 9-11 SU and 8-12 ATS with only one trip to the finals and zero titles. Izzo claims this year is different and that the Spartans do care about the Big Ten Tournament. This coming from a man who routinely says his teams will play up-tempo and then proceeds to go out and play five straight games under the total.

"You gotta be careful what you say around here because people think I think the Big Ten tournament is one-and-done time," he said. Read more

Auburn guard accused of point shaving by feds

03.08.2012     12:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to Yahoo Sports, Auburn guard Varez Ward is being questioned by the federal authorities for point shaving. Ward and teammate Chris Denson were suspended back in early February after head coach Tony Barbee was made aware of the situation. Denson was cleared of any wrong doing and is back on the team but Ward has not returned. One of the games in question was Auburn's February 7 loss to Alabama. Ward went 1-for-5 from the field with six turnovers in the 68-50 loss.

Big XII Tournament Betting Free Play: Texas Longhorns vs. Iowa State Cyclones

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas vs. Iowa State +1.5 O/U 138
Recommendation: Iowa State

The betting markets are pricing this like it’s a ‘must win’ game for Texas for their NCAA Tournament at-large chances, which it is. That being said, the reason that it’s a ‘must win’ game for the Longhorns is because they haven’t been a particularly good team this year, and they enter the Big XII tourney on a nasty late season slide.  Just because Texas needs this win doesn’t mean they’re going to get it!

Texas closed out the regular season on a 2-3 SU, 1-4 ATS slide. One of those wins came in overtime against hapless Texas Tech, not exactly a confidence inspiring victory. The other win came in come-from-behind fashion at home against slumping Oklahoma, another mediocre result. The Longhorns only pointspread cover during this span came in a ten point loss as 12 point underdogs against Kansas. Rick Barnes has an extremely young team, Read more

College Basketball Betting Notes: Cincinnati using 2-3 zone defense

03.08.2012     06:38 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Georgetown -3 vs. Cincinnati O/U 121

Cincinnati used a 2-3 zone in recent wins over Marquette and Villanova. It sounds as if we could see more of it today against Georgetown.

“Sometimes when you get on the road, it can be tough out there with the whistle,” Cronin said. “You don’t want teams parading to the foul line against you. Marquette shot 45 free throws against Georgetown on Saturday. What chance do you have if that happens? Sometimes zone is best for us, depending on who we’re playing and what we think they’re going to do against our man-to-man. The key is to be able to play both. It makes you a better team.”

Big Ten Tournament Gambling Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Favorite – Ohio State – The Big Ten conference featured a three-way tie for the regular season title with Ohio State, Michigan State and Michigan all at 13-5. However, after the Buckeyes took care of business in East Lansing last week they are priced as small favorites to cut down the nets in Indianapolis on Sunday. A team like Michigan could very well be satisfied with its regular season first place finish, while looking instead to peak for the Big Dance. And under Tom Izzo, Michigan State is notorious for not putting much emphasis on this tournament. As for the Buckeyes, they are led by All-American Jered Sullinger (16.9 ppg), Aaron Craft and William Buford. The Buckeyes fought immaturity at times this season, but still finished with a strong 25-6 record. Ohio State perhaps peaked too early in 2011 (34-3, lost in the Sweet Sixteen) but after some struggles in February, the tournament could serve as a springboard to the Big Dance.

Darkhorse – Northwestern – The Wildcats enter the Big Ten tournament hoping to make their first-ever trip to the NCAA Tournament. With an 18-12 overall record the Wildcats are firmly on Read more

SEC Tournament Gambling Preview: Kentucky the overwhelming favorite

03.08.2012     05:35 AM     Alatex Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Alatex Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Obviously Kentucky is the overwhelming favorite in the SEC Tourney, and despite coach John Calipari’s disdain for the tournament, if anyone else wins it will be a major upset.

"Three games in three days doesn't prepare you for anything," Calipari said Tuesday as UK began preparations for the SEC Tournament later in the week. "We just played a whole league schedule." Calipari, who has long made no secret of his lukewarm, at best, attitude about league tournaments, acknowledged how the SEC Tournament (Thursday through Sunday in New Orleans) appeals to UK fans who can't attend a game in Rupp Arena.

"Fans spend their vacation money, their rent money, their cigarette money, and they go to this tournament," Calipari said. "... You almost feel an obligation. Let's go play."

If the Cats were not head and shoulders above the rest of the league, such statements might be an automatic green light to look to fade his team. However, as we have seen in road games at Florida, Vanderbilt and Mississippi State, Kentucky can sleepwalk through 30 minutes of a game and then use its shutdown defense to pull Read more
