NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Iona Gaels at BYU Cougars

03.12.2012     12:45 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NCAA Tournament West Regional
Iona vs. BYU -2 O/U 161.5
Tuesday, 6 pm PT - Dayton, Ohio
Rob Veno Power Rating: BYU -1.5

Betting Take: Two teams that just slipped into the postseason square off in the 14th seed play-in game. The winner takes on no. 3 seed Marquette. Against St. Mary's, Loyola Marymount and Gonzaga, BYU went just 2-5 SU with two of those losses coming at the once vaunted Marriott Center. Defensively, the Cougs' numbers look decent but they had a lot difficulty defending pretty much any team with an above average offense. They'll certainly see that against Iona who during the preseason hung 90 and 89 on Purdue and Maryland respectively. Like BYU, the Gaels often win by outscoring the opposition. Note that against the top two defenses in the MAAC, Fairfield and Manhattan, Iona went 1-3 ATS. Also of note, Iona was 1-3 O/U in games lines 160 or above. BYU didn't play a game lined over 160 and was 4-6 O/U in games line 150 or above. A lot of things outside of just pace need to go right in order to top 161 points in a college basketball game.

NCAA Tournament Betting Preview: Mississippi Valley State vs. Western Kentucky

03.12.2012     12:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NCAA Tournament South Regional
Mississippi Valley State vs. Western Kentucky -4.5 O/U 139
Tuesday, 3:30 pm PT - Dayton, Ohio
Rob Veno Power Rating: Western Kentucky -6

Betting Take: Play-in game with the winner taking on top seed Kentucky. The SWAC will be represented by the class of the league, Mississippi Valley State, who finished 17-1. Like most SWAC schools, the Delta Devils played a lot of "pay check road games" against power conference schools during the non-conference. They took their lumps but were competitive in losses to Iowa State, DePaul, and South Carolina. Western Kentucky fired its coach mid-season and at one point was 5-14 overall and 1-5 in Sun Belt play. The Hilltoppers managed to finish 7-9 in conference play and won four games in four days (by a total of 17 points) to claim the Sun Belt crown. Never know what to expect from these play-in games though they have been relatively low scoring the last few years with scores of 61-44, 58-43 and 69-60. Note however that Mississippi Valley averaged more than 70 possessions per game in conference action. The SWAC has one play-in game victory in five Read more

Oddsmakers say that Kentucky to win it all is a bad bet

03.12.2012     06:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Local Las Vegas oddsmakers weigh in on this year's NCAA Tournament. A few noted that there is little to no value in supporting tournament favorite Kentucky. The Wynn has the Wildcats at 9-to-5. Offshore, The Greek has +185 and Pinnacle +240.

“It’s an awful price,” said Johnny Avello, director of Wynn’s race and sports book. “I want to raise it, but we’ve taken money on this team the entire year. They bet them at the beginning, they bet them in the middle and they bet them at the end.”

“They are definitely deserving as the top team,” said Jay Rood, sports book director for MGM Resorts. “(Kentucky coach) Calipari has mastered the system of getting top young talent and getting them to buy in by playing impactful and meaningful games right off of the bat. This is one of his best teams yet.”

NBA Handicapping: Defending champs Dallas continue to struggle

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed an easy winner on Golden State Saturday when the Warriors whipped the Dallas Mavericks 111-87. The schedule situation could not be much tougher for the Mavericks over the weekend, as they were playing their third road game in three nights, fifth game in six nights and ninth game in 12 days overall. As we’ve seen throughout this shortened NBA season, veteran and aging players are given some nights off in tough scheduling situations, and Dallas head coach Rick Carlisle gave point guard Jason Kidd the night off at Golden State.

The defending champs are just 2-8 SU/ATS their last 10 games but do get a breather with a pair of home games this week against the league’s two worst teams, Washington and Charlotte. Still, Mavs forward Lamar Odom says the chemistry is not there right now.  Dallas has scored 100 or more points just once in their past 13 games but the Mavericks (23-20) have managed to go 22-21 ATS this season with an 18-25 O/U mark.

NBA Betting Notes: Celtics start eight-game road trip with matchup against Lakers

03.11.2012     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston at LA Lakers -5.5 O/U 179.5

For the most part, the Boston Celtics (6-1 since the All-Star break) have had a relatively manageable schedule this season. But starting today in Los Angeles, the Celtics are about to be tested with eight road games in 13 days.

“In my career,” coach Doc Rivers said when asked about the last time he took part in this long of a road trip. “I’ve been in the league for 26 years. It’s a long road trip, but I do think there’s rest in it. The first two games are tough because of the long flight, you play and then you play the next day. But then after that, there’s days off in between. I think the other one is the last, the Denver game (on Saturday) before we go back East, that’s a hard game. Whenever you play Read more

NBA Handicapping: Denver eager to face Memphis after two tough losses in the series

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Memphis at Denver -6 O/U 200

Third meeting of the season between the Grizzlies and Nuggets. The first two were barnburners with Memphis winning 100-97 in overtime and 103-102 – both at home.

"Both games against Memphis, we did a lot of good stuff but we didn't finish the games," Nuggets coach George Karl said after Saturday's practice at the Pepsi Center. "Similar things of missed free throws, rebounding and execution. We didn't finish them off."

"They've proved they're playing at a pretty good level, even without (injured right knee) Zach Randolph. They're changing their personality to be a very good defensive team that creates a lot of offense with turnovers. We're going to have to handle their pressure. We also have to attack them with our defense and try to match it. What team scores the most offense Read more
