NIT Betting Free Play: UMass Minutemen at Drexel Dragons

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
UMass at Drexel -6 O/U 141
Recommendation: Over

Something has to give with tonight's UMass-Drexel total which opened at 141. The Dragons' highest total this season came way back in November against Norfolk State (134.5) and that went UNDER by 17 points. The other was the 130.5 against Niagara which landed 129. In terms of actually producing over 141 points, Drexel (and opposing teams) accomplished the feat just four times this season. But when you take into account who the Dragons played this season, the results aren't surprising. The Colonial League features only two teams (George Mason and Delaware) that are active in pushing the pace. Beyond that, Drexel faced Rider and Niagara, two teams out of the MAAC that are fairly up-tempo. Obviously Drexel doesn't want to get into a track meet but I've watched UMass play enough to know that even the slowest of teams can't help but routinely find open looks early in the shot clock. The Minutemen are relentless and married to the concept of playing at an up-tempo pace regardless of the opponent. Also note that despite playing in a defensive-minded conference, Drexel led the league in offensive efficiency at Read more

NBA Handicapping: Scouts offer opinions on New York Knicks

03.20.2012     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto at New York -9 O/U 198

Some good quotes from NBA scouts on the current state of the New York Knicks under interim head coach Mike Woodson. Note the gem on veteran Amar'e Stoudemire still not understanding the basic concepts of defense.

“He’s different from D’Antoni, the scout said. “He’ll push for certain things. D’Antoni is not real confrontational. I definitely think Mike will stand up to Carmelo Anthony. Now you’re not going to control anybody if they’re not of a mind to do what you’re asking them to do. But Mike is a good leader. He’ll be resourceful and creative. But he won’t back down.”

“Amar’e has no defensive instincts, the NBA scout said. “I don’t Read more

Article about the potential impact of the New York Mets deciding to shorten the fences at Citi Field.

NBA Betting Update: Minnesota Timberwolves in danger of falling out of playoff race

03.19.2012     02:00 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

That brutal stretch of schedule for Minnesota we discussed a few weeks back seems to be getting the best of this team. The Timberwolves have dropped three straight, the last of which an embarrassing 115-99 loss at Sacramento. During the loss, Kevin Love vented his frustration during a timeout. Things are about to get even tougher with tonight's game at Golden State marking the team's fifth straight on the road. The T-wolves then play at Oklahoma City and San Antonio, return home to face Denver, back on the road for back-to-backs, at home vs. Boston, and then two more on the highway against Portland and Sacramento. Minnesota won't play back-to-back home games until April 11-12 – against the Clippers and Thunder.

Online gambling may be key to keeping Atlantic City casinos in business

03.19.2012     12:21 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to the numbers, online gambling could bring in $475 million in tax revenue to New Jersey. Legalized sports betting would add an estimated $120 million.

“If we don’t get sports betting and Internet gaming, two to four casinos in Atlantic City will close within two years,” Lesniak predicted. “It’s a dying industry, and we can help them.”

“Trying to stop people from gambling on sports is like Prohibition,” said state Sen. Raymond Lesniak, D-Union, who also backs Internet poker and online lottery measures. “How did that work out? We are a society that allows gambling, and we’re not going back.”

NBA Betting Alert: Chicago's Derrick Rose unlikely to suit up against Orlando

03.19.2012     12:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Orlando -2 O/U 183.5

Chicago's Derrick Rose (groin) is a tough customer but it doesn't appear that he'll play tonight in Orlando. The Bulls are 9-4 SU, 7-6 ATS and 6-6-1 O/U without Rose this season.

"I really don't know," Rose said when asked when he might return. "They haven't gave me a time. They say with an injury like this you really don't know how long it's going to take.

"Where I thought I was going to be back sooner, missing big games that I would hate to miss like the one tonight, but I got to worry about my health."

Denver signs Manning; Super Bowl XLVII odds drop to 10-1

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You know the guy with the Tim Tebow jersey who thought it would be cool to take a shot with Denver at 50-1 to win next year's Super Bowl? If you happen to be friends with THAT guy, check your phone because you probably just received a text message that reads something like this: "MANNING!!!! 50-1!!! Are you kidding me? ALL THE WAY BABY!"

We won't bore you with details, but according to LVH Sportsbook, Denver's odds dropped from 50-1 to 10-1 (25-1 to 5-1 to win the AFC).

NCAA Tournament Gambling: A handicapper's look at the Sweet Sixteen

03.19.2012     07:55 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The first weekend of the Madness is in the history books and only 16 teams remain standing in the NCAA Tournament. Let’s take a look at those 16 teams and assess their chances for tournament success as the field gets reduced to the Final Four this coming weekend. Teams are listed in rotation order.

Wisconsin is a mirror image of their head coach Bo Ryan: tough as nails. There’s no questioning the Badgers execution or heart, but this is not one of the more talented teams that Ryan has coached during his tenure in Madison. The Badgers are an offensively challenged ballclub that relies heavily on their three-point shooting. Four of their top five scorers average at least one made three pointer per game. Their leading rebounder, Ryan Evans, is 6-6, 210; not a team with a dominant inside presence. We’ve seen the Badgers end up on the wrong side of nearly every “step up in class” game away from home this year, with two exceptions: their win at Ohio State and their win over Vandy to reach the Sweet Sixteen.

Fab Melo’s academic ineligibility wasn’t a major factor for Syracuse in either of its Read more

NIT Betting Free Pick: Minnesota Golden Gophers at Miami Hurricanes

03.19.2012     07:18 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota at Miami-FL
Recommendation: First half over 63.5

I expect a lot more intensity and effort from Miami after its lethargic performance against Valpo in the first round of the NIT. From watching the game, it was clear both teams had no interest in being there as Miami finally woke up in the second half with 42 points. Minnesota should do a better job at grabbing Miami's attention. The Golden Gophers played very inspired ball in their first round win over La Salle. They came out looking to push the pace, took a first half lead and slowed down the pace in the second half en route to a 70-61 win. With the exception of the win over Valpo, Miami has shown the ability to score and play at a faster pace in Coral Gables. In eight ACC home games, the Hurricanes scored 77, 78, 74, 64, 65, 69, 73 and 76 points. Both squads are solid defensively, but like a lot of these secondary tournaments, the first halves tend to play out loose as they feel one another out. Read more

NCAA Tournament Betting News: North Carolina point guard breaks wrist

03.19.2012     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on North Carolina's plans following point guard Kendall Marshall's broken wrist. There is a chance Marshall will try to play with some sort of soft cast in Friday's regional semifinal against Ohio. Beyond Marshall, UNC doesn't have a lot of experience at the point guard position.

“This is big,’’ senior forward Tyler Zeller said. “Kendall’s always been the leader of the team, he’s always been somebody who plays 35-plus minutes per game. … He’s the best point guard in the nation. He makes this team go.”

NBA Handicapping: Schedule for red hot Phoenix Suns about to turn ugly

03.19.2012     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It looked as if the Phoenix Suns would be left for dead after a 12-19 start to the season. But thanks to a home friendly schedule, they've ripped off 11 of 14 (11-3 ATS) and currently trail Houston by half a game for the eighth spot in the Western Conference. The run included only two road games but that is about to change starting Tuesday as Phoenix will play 12 of its next 15 on the highway.
