NFL Gambling: New Orleans head coach Sean Payton suspended

03.21.2012     01:56 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Former NFL great Paul Hornung weighs on the NFL's decision to suspend New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton for a year. Hornung was suspended for the 1963 season for betting on NFL games.

""You know what, looking back it just pisses you off," Hornung said. "I knew 10 other guys who bet. They didn't get them all in my day. I wasn't going to say anything, naturally. But I knew the guys who were betting. They'd brag about it and talk about it. Even back then, they didn't get everybody who was guilty.

"There was no use in me causing a stir by saying there were other guys who weren't caught that I knew were gambling. Sure, it was more of a, I don't know, a friendship deal where you'd bet $50 or $100, an insignificant amount. There was nobody betting enough money to throw a game or anything like that. That never happened."

Trial for last year's Black Friday starts in April

Wonder how many friends this guy has on his Facebook page...

Tzvetkoff, 29, was arrested in 2010 in Vegas for allegedly processing an estimated $1 billion in illegal Internet poker transactions via his company, Intabill. Before making a deal with the prosecution, he was facing up to 75 years in prison. Once a big deal in Australia media, Tzvetkoff was estimated to be worth $82 million only a few years ago. He owned a $27 million house on the Gold Coast with a garage full of Ferraris and Lamborghinis.

Since agreeing to cooperate with officials, he has reportedly given more than 90,000 pertinent documents including confidential emails to prosecutors. As an informant, Tzvetkoff helped bring down the big three online poker sites last year, Full Tilt Poker, PokerStars, and Absolute Poker.

Detroit at NY Rangers -140
Recommendation: Under 5 +100

Two teams that are no doubt going to make the playoffs, but both are definitely not at the top of their games.  Detroit has been dreadful of late losing five straight and seven of its last eight.  The main reason behind their sudden lack of production has to be their lineup.  Without the services of Lidstrom, Ericsson, Franzen, and now Helm, this Detroit team has to play a completely different game.  Look no further than the Red Wings coach Mike Babcock who said, "With the lineup we have, I don't think we can race anybody to four or five (goals). We've got to win 3-2 or 2-1. You've got to give up as little as you possibly can and be sound defensively.  We're not going to outscore teams with the group we have. It's just not possible. So we have to find different ways to win."  That quote screams UNDER hockey to me.  And facing a Rangers team who is third in the league in goals against and the Red Wings will have their hands full again tonight.  Expect a low scoring game between these two teams trying to find their way at the end of the Read more

The story behind blackjack guru Don Johnson

03.21.2012     10:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on how famed blackjack player Don Johnson single-handedly crushed Atlantic City. It is a cool story but we can’t help but notice that a majority of these "win big" stories come out of struggling Atlantic City as oppose to say, Las Vegas. We're not saying Johnson isn't real, or he didn't win what was reported but casino marketing has always worked in weird and mysterious ways.

According to Johnson, the Trop pulled the deal after he won a total of $5.8 million, the Borgata cut him off at $5 million, and the dealer at Caesars refused to fill the chip tray once his earnings topped $4 million.

“I was ready to play on,” Johnson said. “And I looked around, and I said, ‘Are you going to do a fill?’ I’ve got every chip in the tray. I think I even had the $100 chips. ‘Are you guys going to do a fill?’ And they just said, ‘No, we’re out.’”

Washington State at Oregon State -7 O/U 151
Recommendation: Over

Washington State was not a particularly good team this year, finishing 7-11 in a down year for the PAC-12.  The Cougars stumbled down the stretch: 2-4 SU in their last six regular season games, then bowing out of the conference tournament with a first round loss to the same Oregon State team they’ll face today.  Don’t expect Wazzu’s chances of victory to be any better in the short turnaround rematch; the fourth meeting between these same two teams since New Year’s Eve.

The Cougars have survived and advanced through their first two CBI Tournament games thanks to some extremely favorable matchups.  They shot 60% from the floor and hit 25-of-28 from the free throw line against a San Francisco team that simply didn’t have a legitimate defensive gameplan in a step-up-in-class Read more

NBA Handicapping: Bynum's ejection leads to another Lakers road loss

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Lakers at Dallas -4.5 O/U 188.5

The New York Knicks aren't the only team dealing with drama these days. In last night's loss at Houston, LA's Andrew Bynum was ejected after picking up two technical fouls. Needless to say, Lakers head coach Mike Brown was not pleased. LA jumped out to a 40-25 lead after the first quarter and entered the fourth quarter with a six-point lead. Bynum was ejected at the end third quarter and Houston outscored the Lakers 34-25 in the fourth en route to a 107-104 victory. LA is now 8-16 ATS on the road and 3-6 ATS in its last nine ballgames. Dallas has covered seven of the last 10 in the series.

"He's got to figure out what he wants to do," Brown said. "You got to ask him what his response was to the ref when he had the interaction with the ref, but we need him on the floor.

March Madness just as big as Super Bowl for Las Vegas bettors

03.21.2012     07:40 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from Sports Illustrated on how Las Vegas' oddsmakers view March Madness.

“Four days together,” says Todd Fuhrman, senior race and sports book analyst at Caesar’s Palace, “it’s as big as the Super Bowl for Las Vegas.”

“Yeah, I would say as big as the Super Bowl,” says Jay Kornegay, vice president, race & sports operations at the Las Vegas Hotel & Casino — LVH, as it is now known.

“It’s hard to compare, but it’s probably as big as the Super Bowl,” says Ed Malinowski, director of race & sports book at Stratosphere Casino.

“Bigger than the Super Bowl,” says Johnny Avello, executive director, race & sports operations at the Wynn.

CBI Tournament Gambling Preview: Pittsburgh Panthers at Butler Bulldogs

Pittsburgh +1 at Butler O/U 127.5
Recommendation: Pittsburgh

I’ll buck the line move here which probably had everything to do with perceived line value when it opened. It’s true that Pittsburgh was a shell of its former self during the regular season, but now things have changed. Head coach Jamie Dixon has kept an upbeat mantra all season and after finally practicing with his full contingent of players for the very first time last week, Pitt looks more like the team we all expected. Through the first two rounds of this CBI Tournament, the Panthers have obliterated their foes by an average score of 81.5-62.0. Their FG% shooting margin of +17.5% (53.6%-39.1%) in those games is excessively good. The Panthers have the look of a hot and confident team right now which by the way, will be seeking revenge tonight for last year’s closing 1.4 seconds of NCAA Tournament debacle. Butler got the win that that night en-route to their NCAA Championship Read more

Washington State at Oregon State -7 O/U 149
Recommendation: Over

Don't think for a minute that just because Washington State and Oregon State are meeting for a fourth time and are "familiar" with one another that we are all of a sudden going to see a defensive scrum. Check last night's Oregon-Washington game. Those two teams know each other pretty well and the game landed 176 – nearly 23 points over the closing total. Earlier this week, Oregon State hung 101 on TCU. The Horned Frogs were pretty poor on offense (41.9% FG, 26.7% 3-pt, 55.0% FT) yet still managed to get to 81 points. Washington State ran wild in its CBI opener; an 89-75 win at San Francisco. And I put little stock in their last game; a 61-41 win over slow paced and offensively deficient Wyoming. During the regular season, the Beavers and Cougars produced games scores of 157 and 156. During the conference tournament – which at the time was the most meaningful game Read more
