"I really don't know. I have a strong, strong inclination that he's not going to play….If he comes into my room tomorrow and says 'Hey, my wrist feels great' and drops down on the floor and does ten one-handed push ups on his right hand, then I'd say I'd probably play his rear-end. But I don't expect that to happen, I mean the guy can't brush his teeth right now."

Trouble in Clipper Land
after last night's 97-90 loss at New Orleans. LA has lost three straight and has just one spread cover in its last eight games. The Clippers play host to Memphis on Saturday.
"I think it's important for guys to go out there and play off instinct instead of, 'Go here, go there,' or whatever," Del Negro said recently. "I like guys to play. I like guys to get a feel for what we're doing and how we're doing it and work off the instinct and play. I think guys enjoy the game that way a little bit better. Some guys you have to put into specific spots, whether it's because of a skill level or a strength or a weakness or whatever, but you want your guys mainly to just go out there and know what the game plan is and be able to execute it at both ends."

Better defense and a slower pace from the
New York Knicks
as they enter tonight's game at Toronto on a five-game winning streak (6-0 ATS run).
As Basketball-Reference.com's Justin Kubatko pointed out in a piece for The New York Times, the Knicks' pace (possessions per game) has fallen under Woodson. New York averaged 94.2 possessions per game under previous coach Mike D'Antoni, but in the five games since his resignation, the team has slowed to 90.8 per game. That means the Knicks went from being the second-fastest team to the 12th-fastest team.

NCAA Tournament Tips: How accurate have the betting markets been?

Taking a look at how accurate the betting markets have been the last two rounds of the NCAA Tournament. Based on the opening and closing lines at CRIS, the market went 11-6 against the spread in the third round and last night's Sweet Sixteen. In three instances, games opened and closed at the same number. Of the 20 games, the straight up winner covered 15 times. Underdogs went 10-9 ATS (Wisconsin beat Vanderbilt as a pick 'em). Money went with the favorites 12 times, of which the market went 7-5 ATS. Money went with the underdog five times, of which the market went 4-1 ATS.

this
comes from ESPN.com's "Commentary" section so it's not like it was plastered on the front page. And a good thing too because reading Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s take on basketball's "point shaving problem" is painful. Of course he led off with the recent allegations at Auburn – a situation that pretty much everyone agrees was blown out of proportion, just like the whole San Diego/FBI/Operation Hookshot/weed bust ordeal. Kareem then talks a little about Donaghy, because if you want to build a case about how dirty basketball is, Timmy D’s your poster boy. But then things really go south with point shaving references dating back to the 1940s and 50s.
Articles like this are common; point shaving bad, integrity of the game good. We get that. And to say every sport is 100 percent clean would be naive. But anytime we see phrases like "long line of gambling scandals" and "familiar story in basketball",

Milwaukee is on a roll right now: 7-1 SU, 8-0 ATS in its last eight ballgames. They were positively buoyed by the acquisition of Monta Ellis at the trading deadline, giving Scott Skiles exactly what he needed to get this team into the playoffs – a good crunch time scorer.
The Bucks won by 22 on the road at Golden State in his first game with the team, then won by 29 at Portland. Ellis: “Coaches, everybody was phenomenal. I think it made it smooth for me. It’s great man, it’s even better to be out there on the floor with those guys sharing the ball. We’ve got a lot of guys who can hit shots and make plays … I think we’re going to get (in the playoffs) if we keep playing the way we did.”

Holy line adjustment! On today's Sportsmemo Podcast,
Teddy Covers pointed out
the massive difference in tonight's Boston-Milwaukee total compared to when the two teams played on February 29. That game closed 185.5 but went screaming over as Boston won 102-96. Tonight's total is currently 200/199.5. Interesting that the Celtics have yet to play a game this season with a total that closed 200 or higher. The Bucks are the strongest OVER team in the league at 29-15-1 O/U.

Syracuse claims it will look to
push the pace
in tonight's Sweet Sixteen matchup against Wisconsin. Note that against up-tempo BYU, North Carolina, Marquette, UNLV and Indiana, the Badgers played to 60, 61, 63, 62, 54 and 61 possessions.
“In the Big East we were able to play both (styles),” SU guard Brandon Triche said. “We had a few games playing in the 50s. A lot of teams tried to slow us down. I think the biggest thing for us is being able to rebound, try to speed them up a little bit as much as we can.”
“We just have to get the ball and push it and try to beat them down the court,” Fair said. “Then we have to convert on a lot of our offensive trips and not make silly turnovers.”

The conference may have been rightfully ridiculed and rightfully left out of the NCAA Tournament this season but they dominated the NIT. Washington and Stanford make up half of the semifinal field at MSG next week. They perhaps could have had a third team had Oregon not faced the Huskies in the quarterfinals. Note that Washington and Stanford have never had to leave their home floors but NIT Committee head C.M. Newton – a good ol’ SEC boy – tried his best to push his own through as well by giving Tennessee (#1 seed), Ole Miss (#2 seed) and Mississippi State home floor – none of which prospered despite the advantage. After all the deserved PAC-12 bashing this season they deserve some credit with their NIT performances, now let's see if they can continue to earn more by winning away from home against a pair of red-hot teams.

"Vandy is more of a structured, robotic team," said Marquette's Vander Blue. "They like to move the ball from side to side and run plays every time. LSU reminds me a lot of West Virginia. Louisville is once again saying it wants to
push the pace
against Michigan State. The Cardinals have been all over the board this postseason in terms of its possessions per game. In the second round of the Big East Tournament, they played to 83 possessions against Marquette but turned right around and played 56 and 59 possessions against Notre Dame and Cincinnati. In the first round against Davidson, there were 67 possessions while only 58 in the win over New Mexico. The other issue with playing Louisville over the total is that while the pace may be there, the shooting and scoring may not. They've averaged over a point per possession in only four of their last 10 games.
