Twenty-seven of Baltimore's first 37 games are against New York, Toronto, Texas, Boston, Tampa Bay and the Los Angeles Angels.

Not a lot of positive things going out with the organization according to FanGraphs.

Baltimore has a lot of roster decisions to make -- most notably with its starting rotation -- before the start of the season.

“We’re probably ahead of where we were last year because of depth. We’ve got some tough baseball decisions to make that don’t involve waivers or options. They Read more

A model of slightly above average consistency, the Blue Jays have posted season win totals of 81, 85, 75, 86, 83, 87 and 80 the last seven years. In five of those seven seasons, the Jays went .500 or better vs. the American League East.

The Jays added bullpen arms Darren Oliver, Francisco Cordero and Sergio Santos.

The key to Toronto's season could be starter Brett Cecil who last year struggled with his weight and conditioning. Cecil reported to camp 38 pounds lighter but is still having trouble with his velocity. He was in the high 80s his last spring training start and needed 81 Read more

Wade Davis looks to be the odd man out of the Rays' rotation to start the season with James Shields, David Price, Matt Moore, Jeremy Hellickson and Jeff Niemann occupying the top five spots.

Tampa's pitching staff is being called the deepest in baseball. Alex Cobb was sent down to the minors after showing well during last season's call up. Some scouts say Cobb could be a No. 3 or No. 4 on other teams. There is also no room for top pitching prospects Alex Torres and Chris Archer. In the bullpen, the Rays acquired Fernando Rodney and get JP Howell back from Read more

Pretty much sums of the change going on in Boston with Bobby Valentine now in charge.

"One of the manager's jobs is to make those who are uncomfortable comfortable," Valentine said under those blue skies. "And the other job is to make those who are too comfortable uncomfortable."

The Red Sox are grooming former middle reliever Daniel Bard to be a starter. It is a move some scouts question.

One scout said he can't imagine how the Sox don't put Bard in the rotation. "That was their major offseason project, and then you Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers' NCAA Tournament Final Four Betting Preview

03.26.2012     10:26 AM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Over the last two weeks we’ve seen 64 NCAA Tournament teams get eliminated from the field, leaving only the Final Four remaining with a chance to cut down the nets in New Orleans next Monday.

College hoops statistical guru Ken Pomeroy breaks down the four teams chances to win the title as follows: Kentucky 42%, Ohio State 34%, Kansas 17% and Louisville 7%. From my perspective, if John Calipari’s Wildcats play as well next weekend as they did this past weekend, that 42% chance of a title looks pretty darn low.

That being said, it’s going to be very hard for Kentucky to match their near flawless offensive performances in wins over Baylor and Indiana. The Wildcats have scored a ridiculous 220 points in their last 163 possessions; a 1.35 points per possession ratio. Those are not sustainable numbers, even for a team that closed out the weekend ranked #2 in the country (behind only Missouri) with 1.17 points per possession average.

Both Final Four games are rematches of non-conference affairs from earlier in the season. The talking heads on TV are sure to bring up this angle ad nauseum, but the bottom line is that neither affair had a Read more

Unique back-to-back situation for the Utah Jazz after losing at Atlanta last night in quadruple overtime. The loss snapped Utah's six-game winning streak. Tonight, the Jazz are 1.5-point underdogs at New Jersey. Atlanta meanwhile was playing its third game in three nights and has tonight off before traveling to Milwaukee Tuesday. Los Angeles to Las Vegas high-speed train project in the works

03.26.2012     07:25 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
DesertXpress, a high-speed train that is expected to lure visitors from California to Las Vegas, is close to receiving a massive $4.9 billion loan from the federal government. There are questions though as to whether or not the project makes financial sense (they rarely do). For starters, it is a park-and-ride, meaning residents of Los Angeles will have to drive to about an hour outside the city and then jump aboard the train, which would take about an hour and a half. Once passengers get to Las Vegas, they must then find transportation to a hotel/casino. You can also fly roundtrip from LA to Vegas for about $100.

"It's insanity," says Thomas Finkbiner of the Intermodal Transportation Institute at the University of Denver. "People won't drive to a train to go someplace. If you are going to drive, why not drive all the way and leave when you want?"
