NCAA Championship ATS Notes: Oddsmaker's power rating came out Kentucky -4.5

04.02.2012     02:39 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Wynn oddsmaker John Avello noted that his power rating for tonight's NCAA Championship came out Kentucky -4.5. Anticipating the betting love for the Wildcats, he opened the game -5.5. The game is currently -6.5 across the board.

"My power ratings actually had this game at minus-4.5, but I pumped it up a little because we've seen nothing but Kentucky money anytime they play," Avello said. "I knew if I hung that number that it would be a landslide, so I went with 5.5."

MLB Gambling Update: Pineda showing more signs of being damaged goods

04.02.2012     01:22 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

If you are looking for a pitcher to fade in the early going, New York's Michael Pineda appears to be a perfect candidate. Another rough outing with a lack of velocity and according to Pineda, a "sore arm". As a result, he's been placed on the 15-day DL.

Pineda’s velocity sat mostly where it has been all camp: 90 to 92 mph. The scout had him topping off at 93 … on two pitches. “Ton of cutters,” the scout said. “Breaking stuff (was) flat.”

MLB Betting Notes: Lincecum decides to scrap slider to open season

04.02.2012     01:09 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interesting article from FanGraphs on Tim Lincecum’s decision to shelve his slider to start the season. Historically, Lincecum hasn't used it all that much – he's long been a fastball/change-up guy. But for whatever reason, it accounted for a 15.6% of his pitches last season. For most guys, the slider is the "hardest" pitch on an arm so not throwing it could be a good thing for his longevity. But as FanGraphs pointed out, it could be an indication that something isn't right.

Two Spring Training starts ago, I witnessed Lincecum’s radar readings in person, and he only once hit 93 with his fastball. That has jived with this spring’s general assessment that he’s sitting closer to 91 MPH than the 92+ he showed last season. And that number was even the second-worst of his career. Could he be losing the slider because he’s already hurting?

Minnesota at Sacramento -3.5 O/U 217
Recommendation: Sacramento

Minnesota is done – you can stick a fork in the T-wolves right about now.  Minnesota has lost 10 of their last 14, unable to overcome the injuries that have devastated their roster.  All Star forward Kevin Love made it very clear how demoralized the team is by explaining how depleted their roster is right now after losing Ricky Rubio, JJ Barea, Michael Beasley and Nikola Pekovic to injuries in the last month.  Love: “Losing Ricky was obviously the toughest thing for us. We were able to grind out games and get wins, but then Pek went down, J.J. continued to be hurt and Michael just added firepower…”.

Coming off a blowout loss at Portland last night, falling into 12th place in the West, 3.5 games behind Houston for the last playoff spot, this historically miserable franchise doesn’t seem to have the toughness and fortitude to fight through the injuries.  With Read more

Kansas vs. Kentucky
Recommendation: Kentucky -3.5 1st half

I feel like Kentucky is the better team and should win this game, but to me, laying -3.5 in the first half in better than -6.5 for the game. We have seen Kansas struggle in first halves the entire tournament, going 0-4 ATS since its opening round win over Detroit. Kentucky has been the opposite, leading by 3, 7, 11, 19 and 20 at the break in its five games (4-1 ATS). The only real weakness we have seen out of Kentucky on defense is giving up some threes and transition, something that only Indiana was able to take advantage of. That is not really the strength of Kansas, and they have definitely not been a fast starting team, so I expect Kentucky to cover the small halftime number. However, based on KU’s first half/second half dichotomy, don’t forget to consider supporting them after the break if the price is right.

From 2003-11, betting against the Chicago Cubs was a pretty smart move

04.02.2012     08:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Making fun of the Chicago Cubs is easy and so has betting against the Loveable Losers over the last decade. Despite two National League Central titles as well as second and third place finishes, the Cubbies have exactly ONE PROFITABLE SEASON since 2003 and are down a combined -110 units. With expectations extremely low this season (O/U 74.5 wins) is this the year the Cubs hold some sort of betting value? Anything is possible but we understand if you take a "don't bet on it" approach.

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After coming within a single strike of winning the World Series in both the ninth and tenth innings of Game 6 against St Louis last year, it’s going to be hard for the Texas Rangers to maintain their intensity in 2012.  When you lose the World Series two years in a row there’s not a lot that regular season accomplishments mean.  Their lineup is still absolutely loaded with a nice combination of batting average, speed and power.  Signing Yu Darvish was a key move after losing ace CJ Wilson to division rival LA.  But the bullpen that failed them in October last year has the potential to fail them again this year – new closer, 37 year old Joe Nathan doesn’t seem like a good fit to withstand the Texas summer heat.

There’s no team in the AL that can match the Los Angeles Angels in the starting pitching department.  Jeff Weaver, Dan Haren, Erwin Santana and CJ Wilson have the potential to approach 900 innings between them at an All-Star level.  Angels Stadium is a pitcher friendly ballpark and LA has an excellent defensive unit behind their stellar starting staff.   They’ve got two big bats joining an Read more

Wall Street traders may not be allowed to bet on 2012 election

04.02.2012     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly
Betting on the upcoming 2012 election is getting the old stink eye on Wall Street. The Commodity Futures Trading Commission is trying to ban traders from making wagers. Their worry is that candidate backers would take huge positions and drive the public opinion in their favor.

“If the information is going to be reported to the public on such a wide basis, shouldn’t it be coming from a regulated exchange rather than an unregulated overseas trading platform?” Mr. McDermott said.

The North American Derivatives Exchange, the Chicago-based firm that sought to offer the contracts, portrayed its effort as consumer-friendly. With a modest minimum buy-in of $100, and a maximum payout of $250,000, the exchange said it was appealing more to mom-and-pop investors than Wall Street titans.

Kansas vs. Kentucky -6 O/U 137.5
Recommendation: Kentucky

Last game of what has been an absolutely remarkable season. From a service perspective, I produced my third straight winning season with 59% winners and +33.65 units of profit on 185 documented plays. I thank all of the clients that got on board and look forward to continued winning success in the NBA, MLB, and beyond.

As for tonight's National Championship, I don't have a super-strong opinion but have made a personal wager on Kentucky. Most of you know that I prefer underdogs and when I do back a favorite, I don't lay more than a bucket it or two – my clients haven't received a recommendation on a favorite over -4 since way back in November. But this is a tricky price range and one that you have to ask yourself: Do you think Kentucky is going to win the game? I believe they will based on what I've seen the last two or three weeks. Obviously, Kansas is more than capable of covering the +6 as Read more
