MLB Betting Notes: St. Louis adjusts to life without pitching guru Dave Duncan

04.05.2012     12:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article on St. Louis Cardinals pitching coach Derek Lilliquist and what he is doing to maintain the teachings of Dave Duncan. Duncan was forced to take a leave of absence when his wife was diagnosed with cancer.

"The program is very similar to the way Dunc used to run things," Wainwright said. "I think he learned a lot from Dave and he's incorporated some (new) things that he believes in, and it really works.

"He's great because he played in the big leagues. He understands the game. He understands the travel and the way things work (with) pitching. He understands the body and mechanics of pitching. It's an all-around good fit."

NBA Handicapping: Van Gundy says Knicks playing better defense

04.05.2012     12:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
New York at Orlando -3 O/U 189

Taking a quick break from trying to explain why his star player wanted him fired, Orlando head coach Stan Van Gundy offered some opinions on the New York Knicks. Van Gundy noted that defensively, the Knicks are much better without Amar'e Stoudemire and Jeremy Lin.

“They’re better defensively in my mind,’’ Van Gundy added. “The thing that’s helped them defensively, is Carmelo is playing real, real hard but they got Shumpert back in the lineup. That’s been a big part of that. And Baron Davis is probably a better defender than Jeremy Lin at this point. What’s happened is their injuries have made them a far better defensive Read more

NBA Betting Free Pick: Washington Wizards at Detroit Pistons

Washington at Detroit -8 O/U 191
Recommendation: Detroit

When teams don’t look past the Wizards, they beat the Wizards.  Washington is a tired team.  They played back-to-backs on Sunday and Monday.  They endured a back-to-back-to-back stretch last week, and are in the middle of a second ‘three games in three nights’ stretch tonight with this game against the Pistons.  And for a team that was competing hard for an extended stretch in March, we’re starting to hear excuses for Washington’s poor results (1-8 SU in its last 9 games, 3-13 in its last 16, with only four pointspread covers in defeat during that entire span

Wizards head coach Randy Wittman: “Hopefully we can get our injured guys back as soon as possible, but if not, we have to find a way to pull through. It is hard being in this situation with some new guys. Some players are not used to certain plays, but that’s the nature of this business.”  Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Getting to know Texas' Yu Darvish

04.05.2012     09:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article from a former MLB scout on Texas' Yu Darvish.  It was pointed out that Darvish looked especially strong this spring against right-handed batters. He is expected to make his MLB debut on Monday against Seattle.

One trend I noticed was the differential between Darvish's ability handling right-handed versus left-handed hitters. He looks to be devastating against righties. He uses pitches that jam hitters, or he throws breaking balls that leave hitters totally off balance and flailing at the ball.

In contrast, lefties have a better and longer look at the ball, and to my observation, they see pitches that allow them to extend their arms and drive the ball. Darvish's pitches to lefties seem to move into the hitting zone. The righty-lefty differential is one that opposing teams may expose and exploit.

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Clippers at Sacramento Kings

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Clippers -3 at Sacramento O/U 206
Recommendation: Over

The Kings have been on a high-scoring streak their last 12 games averaging over 109 ppg. Their lowest point production over that stretch was 99 points. The Kings play the Clippers in revenge mode following a 108-100 home loss in their only meeting of the season. The teams will play again in Los Angeles April 7, but tonight figures to be a high-scoring shootout with the Kings holding nothing back.

The Clippers had their six-game losing streak snapped last night in a 113-108 loss to the Lakers. They figure to lack defensive energy following that loss, and while the Clippers defense has been improved the past month, note that they ranked near the bottom of the league in points per possession through late February (103 ppg). Also note that the Clippers played 12 of their past 15 games at home, and in their three road games they allowed 97, 102 and 114 points.

The Clippers (32-22) are still in solid playoff Read more

With injuries to Ryan Howard and Chase Utley as well as the departure of Raul Ibanez, Philadelphia manager Charlie Manuel plans on toying with his lineup early this season. Below is today's slated lineup vs. Pittsburgh.

MLB Betting Game Notes: Miami's Buehrle set to go after sluggish spring

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Buehrle) at Cincinnati (Cueto) -145 O/U 7.5

Nothing out of the ordinary but Miami's Mark Buehrle once again limped his way through spring training. The veteran is notorious for poor preseason performances. This afternoon he makes his National League debut in Cincinnati. Of today's lineup for the Reds, Scott Rolen, Brandon Phillips, Jay Bruce, Ryan Hanigan are a combined 4-for-26 lifetime against Buehrle. The rest of the lineup has never faced him.

"I feel like I've thrown terrible, as always, but it's not all about results, it's about getting your work in, innings up, pitch count up, get ready for opening day," Buehrle said.

I made a couple of mistakes, I had the ball up," Buehrle said. "Whenever I'm good and my ball is moving the way I want it to we get a lot of groundballs. When they're hitting the ball in the air it just Read more

NBA Handicapping: Chicago's Rose nears return from injury

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston at Chicago

The Chicago Bulls are eyeing the return of both Derrick Rose (groin) and Rip Hamilton (shoulder) this week. Both players have been sidelined with injuries but practiced at full speed Wednesday. The Bulls went 7-4 SU, 6-5 ATS in Rose's absence. The team is coming off back-to-back losses for the first time in over a year. Early reports have Rose "doubtful" for tonight vs. Boston but "probable" for Sunday's game at New York.

“I really don’t know,” Rose said when asked if he would recover fully or be at less than 100 percent for the rest of the season. “This is my first time ever having this injury. Usually people, after they have it, they don’t have it anymore, but my biggest thing is coming back too quick and reinjuring Read more
