Saturday MLB Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Cardinals at Milwaukee Brewers

04.06.2012     06:52 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis (Wainwright) at Milwaukee (Greinke) -120 O/U 7
Recommendation: Milwaukee

Last season, the Milwaukee Brewers went an MLB-best 57-24 at home – a number that they are unlikely to duplicate. Contributing in large part to that success was Zach Greinke who went a perfect 11-0 (Milwaukee was 17-0 in his starts) at Miller Park – again a number that simply cannot be matched. But, the Brewers should once again be contenders in the NL Central and to see a premium arm like Greinke at home at such a cheap price has my interest. At no point last year was Greinke cheaper than a -130 home favorite and despite opposing starter Adam Wainwright's pedigree, the fact that he didn't pitch at all last season leaves me leery that he'll be dialed in immediately (he’ll likely be on some sort of pitch count). St. Louis is off to a 2-0 start but remain a team I am looking to bet against in the early going. The spot seems ripe today to exercise that opinion.

MLB Betting Trends: Trying to figure out why Wakefield and Dickey show day/night splits?

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Back in 2010, we posted a blog on the oddity of Tim Wakefield's day/night splits. For whatever reason – who couldn't come up with anything logical – Wakefield's career numbers during the day were dramatically better than at night.

Wakefield Day: 3.69 ERA/1.22 WHIP/.238 BAA
Wakefield Night: 4.72 ERA/1.41 WHIP/.261 BAA

This from a guy who showed little to no split both righty/lefty and home/road. It stood out even more considering some of his fellow knucklers – Phil Niekro, Tom Candiotti, and Charlie Hough – didn't have any day/night dichotomy.

Well with Wakefield now retired – he'll be on the Yankees by mid-June – that leaves us with our main man R.A. Dickey as the lone knuckleballer. Dickey is slated to start tomorrow at home against Atlanta...for a 1:10 pm ET start. Remembering Wakefield's split, we out of curiosity checked Dickey's career numbers during the day. What we found further cemented Wakefield's splits as being random; Dickey's career numbers Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: Bettors show confidence in Rockies, gladly fade Astros

04.06.2012     01:03 PM     Printer Friendly
Colorado (Guthrie) -125 at Houston (Rodriguez) O/U 7.5

The betting markets seem to think the Rockies and Jeremy Guthrie are the right side for tonight's matchup against the Astros. Houston’s Wandy Rodriguez has typically been a strong pitcher at home (3.32 ERA in 13 starts last season) but no one is going to mistake the Astros for having even a mediocre lineup. Check out these numbers for Houston's starters: .339, .335, .319, .311, .308, .305 (minor leagues), .297, and .286. Those are the career on-base percentages of the eight position players. MLB Betting Trends: Texas Rangers vs. Left-Handed Starters at Home

04.06.2012     10:40 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

An update from a trend we followed last year – Texas vs. left-handed starters at home. By late July, the Rangers/Over parlay was nearly an automatic following that format. But it cooled off late in the year. Still, Texas averaged nearly 6.5 runs per game. The one thing we will point out is a lot of the production came against bottom-tier southpaw starters. Tonight they face a pretty decent arm in Chicago's John Danks. The Rangers beat Danks last season, 4-0.

Mega Millions lottery OK, online gambling still taboo

04.06.2012     10:15 AM     Printer Friendly
Article from the Off Shore Gaming Association on the hypocrisy of the lottery and online gambling.

“Whichever company or organization that can generate the most revenue will be given the license to run the online gambling in New Jersey,” the legislator said. “Obviously the state wants to ensure that the horse racing industry and casino owners are treated fairly and are given some of the revenue to offset any losses that occur as a result of online gambling but the vast majority of revenues must go to the state. And this revenue has to be undesignated.”

“It’s very hypocritical. That’s why when I had some influence I urged the Governor to legalize all gambling and to also take bets from everywhere. Telling Americans that they’re doing a service to the state by betting at a local casino but also telling them that they are committing a crime by wagering at a website that is legal in another country is just selling them snake oil. And Americans aren’t buying it. Even with all the websites that were closed down, Americans Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Berkman claims Marlins Park is massive

04.06.2012     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
St. Louis' Lance Berkman offering his opinion on Miami's new Marlins Park…

“It’s huge ... the biggest ballpark in the game,” Berkman said. “If they don’t move the fences in after this year, I’ll be surprised. I’ll go with two years with the over/under on that."

“People have tried this big ballpark deal and it never works.  Detroit moved the fences in. New York moved the fences in. There’s a reason why it’s 330-375-400. That’s a fair baseball game. You try to get too outrageous, you end up with something that I think will be detrimental to their ballclub.”

The Utah Jazz will try to tighten up the defense after allowed 100+ in three of their last four games.

"We have to be tougher on the ball," said coach Tyrone Corbin. "We have to take the assignments personally — you and your man. …

"It’s that time of year where everything has to be up a notch. And we have to figure out how to get there with our young group of guys."
