A baseball scout weighs in on Daniel Bard's
first career start
. Bard went five innings, allowed five earned runs and struck out six in a 7-3 loss to Toronto yesterday. He also had 18 swings and misses and Inside Edge claimed only two out of 23 balls were classified as being hit "well" off of him.
"He was OK, but I still like him better out of the bullpen. I know he said he was changing speeds on his fastball, but he lost three miles [per hour] off his slider, too. I think he was getting tired. It's really tough to be a two-pitch pitcher and start. The changeup? Not much there.
"But it really doesn't matter what I think, or Bobby [Valentine] thinks or anybody else thinks. It will all show up. I think it will be either very good, or very bad. They probably should have gone out and gotten another starter, but they bet big, and I think they've got to give it two months and see how it goes.'

Todd Fuhrman
on betting the NHL Stanley Cup Playoffs.
Furhman: We're in a very good spot as it pertains to our NHL futures right now, with the only mild exposure coming on the L.A. Kings to win the Western Conference. The best-case scenario would be the Senators or Panthers winning the Cup, but the reason we're so strong there is because bettors don't believe they can win it any more than I do. I think the short series prices in the opening round will attract some favorite action from the casual fan, but the fact you don't have a favorite over -230 just goes to show that it's wide open.

Bubba Watson confused with Tom Watson
– we assume it was a miscalculation based on the name not visual characteristics. So Bubba's odds to win the Master were offered at 1000-1 as oppose to the accurate market price of 40-1. Naturally some
dude
chap named Lee Beardmore (WOW that sounds really British!) thought he was getting a great deal, bet Bubba at 1000-1, and is furious the sportsbook won't honor it. Sure he’s got a point, but every bettor should know that 99 times out of 100, the books win these type of arguments. Heck, this type of thing happens twice a week at Pinnacle.

The 2012 Masters took in the most betting action in golf history. Bubba Watson, who opened at 40-1 to win and has never taken a golf lesson, provided his betting backers with a big pay day. Bubba closed at 30-1 to win at the LVH (Hilton) in Las Vegas, but the sportsbooks still made plenty of money and ‘green’ on the tournament. Tiger Woods recent win at Bay Hill and his return to Augusta sparked big betting action and profit for the sportsbooks with Tigers finishing T40th; the

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Samardzija shows promise in first start

Almost as shocking as Barry Zito's complete game shutout against the Rockies Monday was the gem Chicago received from the often times erratic Jeff Samardzija. Thrust into the role of a starter, Samardzija allowed just one earned run and struck out eight in a 4-3 win over Washington. But perhaps even more impressive is that he didn't walk a batter (some thanks should probably go out to umpire Doug Eddings). So was Samardzija's performance a one-time deal or a sign of potential? According to

, a few stats indicate that he could be a "capable starter" which for the Cubs (1-4) is pretty good news. Samardzija is scheduled to throw Friday at St. Louis.

Without or without Kobe Bryant, Los Angeles just can’t seem to cover a pointspread these days with its current run now at 2-13 ATS. Bryant is listed as "out" for tonight's game at San Antonio. While the Lakers have been a pointspread disaster (22-35-1 YTD), the Spurs have somehow produced the best ATS record in the league at 34-19-2. Amazing we you consider head coach Gregg Popovich’s willingness to wave the white flag in certain spots so his veterans can rest.

What to expect: Goals will be at a premium in this series and there is no doubt both goalies will feel the pressure of the one goal game. Each meeting between these two teams had five goals or less. Vancouver looks to make its way back to the Stanley Cup Finals on the back of the Sedin brothers up front and Roberto Luongo in net. With Daniel Sedin getting back on the ice after his concussion he becomes the deciding factor in this series and should give the Canucks enough offense to advance (if in fact he is healthy enough to play). The Kings have made some big moves in order to bolster a below average offense. Will the additions of Jeff Carter (assuming he plays) and Mike Richards be enough for Los Angeles to upset the Canucks? MLB Handicapping: Velocity down for some big-name starting pitchers

Good article from
ESPN
on some of the velocity issues with starting pitchers. It is not uncommon to see a few "dead arms" this early in the season with spring training not always allowing enough time to build strength and stamina. And fastball velocity league wide tends to pick up as the season progresses. Still, dips in velocity need to be addressed on a case-by-case basis. Felix Hernandez's lack of fastball is perhaps a concern though he did shed some weight during the offseason. Clayton Kershaw was sick in his first start so he gets a pass. Rumors are circulating that Tim Lincecum's lack of gas is a sign that something may not be right. Josh Beckett also makes the list after a disastrous fastball-less first outing.

Masters Tournament provides big weekend for sportsbooks

LVH Sportsbook Director Jay Kornegay said that
last week's Masters
was most wagered on golf tournament in history. Winner, Bubba Watson, went off at 40-1 prior to the event.
"This was the biggest golf tournament, wagering wise, in the history of golf betting," said LVH Race and Sportsbook Vice President Jay Kornegay.
"It all surrounded Tiger," Kornegay said. "With all the bets that came in on Tiger, this definitely made it the biggest wagering tournament in history."

tonight against Seattle. It is an opponent that Feliz has had a little bit of success against. In 17 appearances, tallying 16 innings, the Mariners have yet to record a hit against the Rangers right hander. Yep, in 48 at-bats, Seattle is hitless (current roster 0-for-22) and has only reached base five times. Perhaps a good sign that Feliz spent much of the winter rediscovering his change-up – a pitch he'll need in order to survive a full season as a starter.

What to expect: The New York Rangers have been playing playoff hockey since Day 1 of the NHL season. They are the best shot blocking team in the NHL, they have an elite goaltender in Lundqvist that can steal a game if needed, they play suffocating defense, and they typically receive contributions from all four forward lines. I am not however quick to dismiss what head coach Paul MacLean has done with the Ottawa Senators this season. The complete 180 this team has done is remarkable and they have been a consistent team throughout the much of the season. With Spezza, Alfredsson, and Michalek up front, the Senators are a very dangerous team and tough draw for the Rangers as seen in some of their recent meetings. The key in this series (like most) is goaltending and it is hard to go against King Henrik. In the end, New York has the overall depth and defensive style to grind down Ottawa and win a seven game series. New York takes this series in 6 games, but like

MLB Betting Recap: Texas' Darvish limps through first start

gave a recap of Yu Darvish's MLB debut. Darvish had a rocky first inning (43 pitches, 4 ERs) but settled down enough to earn the win (as a huge -250 favorite). Overall, only 59 of his 111 pitches were strikes.
It wasn’t a stellar debut, and Yu Darvish walked too many batters. He still garnered ten swinging strikes on 111 pitches, for a 9% swinging strike rate that would have been a top-40 number among qualified starters last year. He settled down after a poor first inning and battled through a tough day. His team won. Most importantly, he certainly learned more about the American strike zone, and what sort of strategies he will have to employ when faced with lefty-heavy lineups in the future. It wasn’t a stellar debut, but it was a step forward.
