Bookie tells funny story of taking advantage of not-so-smart baseball bettor

04.13.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We found this on the website dealbreaker.com which looks to have some sort of financial ties. Anyway, they have a series of articles written by "Anonymous Sports Book Manager" that may or may not be true/real, though are pretty entertaining. Here is one on betting baseball and a client named "Mike." Long story short, don't be like "Mike."

Turns out the 20% I’m paying Faithful Assistant is money well spent: he quickly put together that Mike is betting the same teams with both our places. That might be the stupidest piece of betting I’ve ever laid my eyes on. He calls one number, bets the Yanks, then calls the second number and bets the Yanks again. His second price is almost always worse—how much worse, well, it depends on how greedy we feel.

MLB Betting Preview: Cincinnati Reds at Washington Nationals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati (Arroyo) at Washington (Zimmermann) -140 O/U 7
Recommendation: Washington

Washington’s momentum – taking two out of three in Chicago to open the season, then taking two out of three against the Mets prior to last night’s win over Cinci – is very real.  The Nationals are legitimate contenders; something they haven’t been at any point since the franchise left Montreal for Washington, DC.  The Nats refuse-to-lose attitude in early season play has been particularly impressive.  They’ve rallied from behind to win twice, and won twice (including yesterday’s affair) – on their final at-bat.

Cincinnati is on the other end of the positive momentum spectrum, dropping below .500 with yesterday’s defeat.  The Reds offense isn’t clicking at all right now, producing only eight runs in their last four games.  Starter Bronson Arroyo was lit up by the ice cold Marlins lineup in his debut last Read more

NBA Handicapper Free Play: Utah Jazz at New Orleans Hornets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Utah at New Orleans +4 O/U 191
Recommendation: New Orleans

Key injuries have left each of these teams shorthanded but New Orleans has played under this circumstance all season while Utah is now being severely tested. Already down to nine healthy players in Wednesday’s gutty 103-91 road victory at Houston, the Jazz rotation could be depleted once more tonight as starting SF Paul Milsap has now been downgraded to doubtful. Utah’s starting five will likely be PF Derek Favors, SF DeMarre Carroll, C Al Jefferson, SG Gordon Hayward and PG Devin Harris. There are slim picking behind them as PG Jamaal Tinsley, rookie SG Alec Burks and rookie PF Enes Kanter are the only healthy players and they’ve combined for 15.2 ppg , 7.6 rpg with only Kanter shooting better than 42.5% from the field. This majority of this group is not used to stretch run playoff pressure so they’re asked to deal with a lot physically and mentally. This dilemma should suit the “nothing to Read more

NBA Betting Notes: Boston Celtics gear up for back-to-back-to-back

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston -7 at Toronto O/U 177

For the first time this season, the Boston Celtics will play the dreaded three-games-in-three-nights starting this evening in Toronto. The Celtics have won 11 of 14 (11-3 ATS). Tonight's game also marks the first of four straight road tilts.

“We’re just going to play it game by game,’’ said Rivers. “We’re all over the place with that one. It’s so hard to figure out who needs the rest and who doesn’t. I don’t talk about (the tough schedule), don’t mention it to our guys. I don’t even talk about it with our staff.

NBA Handicapping: Rockets playing better defense since moving Camby to center

04.13.2012     07:07 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Phoenix at Houston -4 O/U 200

Important game in Houston tonight as the Rockets and Phoenix Suns battle for a berth in the postseason. The Rockets have won four of five and are playing better defense since moving Marcus Camby to center.

In the first six games with Camby starting, Rockets opponents made 42.5 percent of their shots and 30.1 percent of their 3s and averaged 94.8 points.

Before the switch, opponents made 45.6 percent of their shots and 32.1 percent of their 3s and averaged 99.5 points.

“We’ve been getting better in pick-and-roll defense, and we have gotten better at guards breaking to the basket, so we have a solid base,” Rockets forward Luis Scola said. “I think we’re still good. It just wasn’t a good game (Wednesday) night.”

MLB Gambling Notes: San Francisco's Wilson not likely to pitch vs. Pittsburgh

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (McDonald) at San Francisco (Cain) -170 O/U 6.5

San Francisco manager Bruce Bochy is concerned with closer Brian Wilson after Wilson needed 32 pitches to record his first save of the season last night in Colorado. Wilson's velocity was down and he also turned his ankle. Bochy said he would prefer not to throw Wilson tonight.

MLB Betting Update: Seattle's Hernandez struggles with velocity and command

04.13.2012     06:48 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Oakland (Colon) at Seattle (Hernandez) -145 O/U 6.5

Update on Seattle's Felix Hernandez and his lack of velocity in the early going. Also a concern in his groundball-to-fly ball ratio. King Felix hasn't had a season with more fly balls than groundballs but through two starts he's allowed 28 fly balls to only 14 grounders.

The key for him to remain an elite starter will be figuring out how to keep getting the necessary sink and location to remain a ground ball pitcher, and use the secondary stuff to rack up the strikeouts. If he keeps pitching up in the zone like he did on Saturday, he might not be as King-esque as he has been in prior years.

MLB Handicapping: LA Angels already the least profitable team in baseball

04.13.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
High expectations and multiple flaws have the Los Angeles Angels as the least profitable team in baseball at -4.50 units. According to ESPN, some of those flaws include Jered Weaver and Ervin Santana not being able to duplicate their 2011 numbers. The bullpen has already looked shaky with a 5.40 EA and .311 BA against. The Angels open up a three-game series in New York this afternoon.

Full Tilt's Lederer annd Ferguson get hit with class-action suit

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
More trouble for Full Tilt Poker. Directors Chris "Jesus" Ferguson and Howard Lederer were hit with a class-action lawsuit by online players.

"Additionally, defendants approved distributions and loans to the other owners of Full Tilt Poker from funds directly traceable to the player accounts,'' the lawsuit says. ''The distributions and loans to Lederer, Ferguson and the other Full Tilt Poker owners were from intermingled funds containing monies from the player accounts."

MLB Gambling: Boston Red Sox starting to sour in the betting markets

04.13.2012     06:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston's rough start to the season (1-5) has bettors shying away from the normally popular ball club according to Las Vegas oddsmakers.

“We’re seeing significantly less Red Sox action this year compared to last year. It’s the least amount of Red Sox action we’ve taken in a while. They’re kind of an afterthought,” said Matthew Holt, director of race and sports at Cantor Gaming in Las Vegas.

“There are longer odds this year than the past couple of years due to the man-ager and GM change, and the fact that some of the other teams have added some key players to their teams,” Rood said.
