Offshore sportsbook the first to post NFL Week 1 lines

04.19.2012     01:33 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In the race to post the first NFL lines of the season BetOnline took first prize with $500 limits on Week 1's games. Las Vegas' LVH followed suit yesterday. Note that BetOnline's oddsmakers said despite the perceived risk, the early handle they receive is minimal and they'll ultimately need underdogs and Unders to cash like most weeks.

“People that say things like that don’t understand the business,” Mason said Wednesday night. “Our limits on the openers are just $500. Besides, 1 percent of 1 percent of the total handle we get on these games came in last night and today. Come Sept. 5, we’ll be needing the underdogs and the unders in 80 percent of the games like usual.”

“We have a team of three oddsmakers that I’m part of, plus we use some consultants, so we were making our own numbers and after a while of waiting for others to post the openers we saw ours were as good as anyone else’s and we decided to go ahead and throw them out there first,” Mason said. “It worked for us Read more

NBA Betting News: Miami-Chicago matchup has some meaning

04.19.2012     12:35 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Miami -6 O/U 183.5

Don't get too excited but Chicago and Miami actually have something to play for with the Heat only two game back in the loss column for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. Chicago's Luol Deng (ribs) is probable, Derrick Rose (foot) is doubtful and Miami's Dwayne Wade (ankle) has been upgraded to probable.

“Everything is still up for grabs right now,” said Heat coach Erik Spoelstra. “So if you have an opportunity, you have to take it.”

“We need to play for something,” said LeBron James, who had 28 points in three quarters against Toronto. “It’s not all about the No. 1 seed, it’s about continuing to get better, and if it happens we’ll relish that moment. None of us want to go into the postseason losing games.”

MLB Handicapping: Pressure on New York's Hughes vs. Minnesota

04.19.2012     11:26 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Swarzak) at New York (Hughes) -210 O/U 9.5

Once again we see New York's Phil Hughes pitching to save his spot in the rotation with Andy Pettitte and Michael Pineda close to returning. Hughes claims that in his first two starts, he used too much of his cutter and change-up and will focus more on throwing fastballs and curveballs tonight against Minnesota. According to FanGraphs, Hughes’ velocity has been good.

"For me, I don't think he has the makeup to start," the scout said. "He is a two-inning reliever who can rear back and throw his fastball."

"He's gotten into some longer counts and has not been able to put hitters away," Joe Girardi said. "He has gotten plenty of strikeouts up, but he has also made some mistakes up. There is a fine line when you pitch up Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Philadelphia Phillies at San Diego Padres

Philadelphia (Worley) -115 at San Diego (Wieland) O/U 6.5
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Expect the Phils to open this weekend series strong tonight behind Vance Worley. Floundering through the first 12 games at 5-7 due to an anemic offense, Philadelphia could find this venue to their liking. With a current lineup featuring very little power, they figure to be built perfectly on offense for this park. Juan Pierre, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence can all use their singles and gap style hitting along with their speed to score runs in Petco. Tonight’s opposing starter Joe Wieland was very accommodating to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his only start thus far allowing six runs on six hits (16 total bases) plus a pair of walks in just five innings of work. Wieland’s penchant for pounding the strike zone and not yet mastering anything off speed with a significant velocity differential should play into the hands of the free swinging Phillies hitters. Meanwhile, San Diego’s .179 home batting average, .298 on base percentage and .274 slugging percentage, all indicate Worley could put together another quality outing like he did Read more

NHL Playoff Free Betting Pick: St. Louis Blues at San Jose Sharks

St. Louis at San Jose -110 O/U 5
Recommendation: Under

Heading into Game 4 in San Jose tonight this series has been a very close hard fought affair.  St. Louis holds the 2-1 series lead, but San Jose still has the opportunity on its home ice to get back in the series and knot things up at two games apiece.  The first three games have seen scores of 3-2, 3-0, and 4-3.  The main storyline in this series has been the Blues’ Power Play efficiency which has seen at least one goal scored in all three games (5-for-13 for the series).  In fact, St. Louis went 3-for-4 on the man advantage on Monday night while San Jose also added a PP goal going 1-for-4.  If San Jose wants to get back into this series they will have to be better on their PK and they know this.  "We just haven't moved well together [on the PK]," forward Joe Pavelski said. "We know we can do it. We've shown it in the past. We've got to get the clears when we get the chance and get the first save, which we have. We have to do a better job of clearing out."  San Jose will be more aggressive on their kill tonight and we'll end up seeing Read more

NBA Handicapping: Loss to Washington puts Milwaukee on the brink

04.19.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee at Indiana -5.5 O/U 205.5

Last night's loss to Washington may have been the final nail in the coffin for the Milwaukee Bucks who now trail Philadelphia by 2.5 games for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks have five games remaining including next Wednesday vs. the 76ers (whoever wins will own the tiebreaker). Tonight's opponent, Indiana, has won and covered both meetings this season.

"It's tough to lose games against teams that are not in the fight or in the race for the playoffs. Then again, we can't say this is the most disappointing loss of the season," he said. "It shouldn't have come down to this game or the next game."

"It's an absolute must-win for us. We have to find a way to get that game," Skiles said.
