with Andy Pettitte and Michael Pineda close to returning. Hughes claims that in his first two starts, he used too much of his cutter and change-up and will focus more on throwing
fastballs and curveballs

Recommendation: Philadelphia
Expect the Phils to open this weekend series strong tonight behind Vance Worley. Floundering through the first 12 games at 5-7 due to an anemic offense, Philadelphia could find this venue to their liking. With a current lineup featuring very little power, they figure to be built perfectly on offense for this park. Juan Pierre, Jimmy Rollins, Shane Victorino and Hunter Pence can all use their singles and gap style hitting along with their speed to score runs in Petco. Tonight’s opposing starter Joe Wieland was very accommodating to the Los Angeles Dodgers in his only start thus far allowing six runs on six hits (16 total bases) plus a pair of walks in just five innings of work. Wieland’s penchant for pounding the strike zone and not yet mastering anything off speed with a significant velocity differential should play into the hands of the free swinging Phillies hitters. Meanwhile, San Diego’s .179 home batting average, .298 on base percentage and .274 slugging percentage, all indicate Worley could put together another quality outing like he did

Heading into Game 4 in San Jose tonight this series has been a very close hard fought affair. St. Louis holds the 2-1 series lead, but San Jose still has the opportunity on its home ice to get back in the series and knot things up at two games apiece. The first three games have seen scores of 3-2, 3-0, and 4-3. The main storyline in this series has been the Blues’ Power Play efficiency which has seen at least one goal scored in all three games (5-for-13 for the series). In fact, St. Louis went 3-for-4 on the man advantage on Monday night while San Jose also added a PP goal going 1-for-4. If San Jose wants to get back into this series they will have to be better on their PK and they know this. "We just haven't moved well together [on the PK]," forward Joe Pavelski said. "We know we can do it. We've shown it in the past. We've got to get the clears when we get the chance and get the first save, which we have. We have to do a better job of clearing out." Last night's loss to Washington may have been the
final nail in the coffin
for the Milwaukee Bucks who now trail Philadelphia by 2.5 games for the eighth seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bucks have five games remaining including next Wednesday vs. the 76ers (whoever wins will own the tiebreaker). Tonight's opponent, Indiana, has won and covered both meetings this season.
"It's tough to lose games against teams that are not in the fight or in the race for the playoffs. Then again, we can't say this is the most disappointing loss of the season," he said. "It shouldn't have come down to this game or the next game."
"It's an absolute must-win for us. We have to find a way to get that game," Skiles said.

Looks like the old "must win" situation is getting some love from the betting markets with Philadelphia bet up from -6.5 to -9.5 for tonight's road game at Cleveland. Unless there was some sort of pregame agreement that the Cavs were only going to play four players, supporting the 76ers at this price in this type of situation seems a bit risky, no? (0-3 SU/ATS last three, 6-13 SU/ATS since 3/14).

Kentucky Derby's large field remains a challenge for bettors

. For some, the solution has been a $1 eight-horse superfecta box ($1,680).
There is a Hall of Fame trainer who became know a decade or so ago for the frequency with which he cashed large superfecta tickets, particularly during the summer meeting at Saratoga. Eventually, his method became known to those with connections on the other side of the betting windows. When a specific set of circumstances were in place -- specifically the wide-open race with a large field -- the bet was -- and in all likelihood still is -- an eight-horse superfecta box. The key was anchored not in picking winners but in the process of elimination.
Since 2008 -- admittedly a small sample but nevertheless current and reflective of recent trends -- only one Derby winner, Big Brown, has returned less than $10.00. The favorite that year, the last horse to win both the Derby and Preakness, paid $6.80 at Churchill. In subsequent years, Mine That Bird paid $103.20, Super Saver $18 and Animal Kingdom $43.80.

did an extensive article on the impact Minnesota's Target Field has had on offenses due in large part to wind patterns. Nothing we as bettors weren't already aware of but still well worth the read.
- Target Field allowed the third-fewest home runs per game in the American League in 2010 and 2011, according to ESPN's Home Run Tracker.
-It is the fourth-toughest park in the AL for hitters, according to ESPN's Park Factors, which calculates how each ballpark plays in comparison to the league average.
"When it's warm, and the ball wants to carry, the winds are fighting that, and they're blowing through that gap in right," Huttner said. "It boils down to the way the park is laid out. The wind and weather is almost always working against the ball traveling out of Target Field."

It’s been another long, ugly season in New Jersey, but head coach Avery Johnson still has his team fighting hard down the stretch. A matchup with their rivals from across the river isn’t likely to change that. We saw the Nets take Miami down to the wire in their last game; a wire-to-wire pointspread cover as +8.5 underdogs. Now the betting markets are trying to tell us that the Knicks – playing on the second night of back-to-backs, one night after hitting a whopping 19 three pointers in a national TV win over Boston – deserve the same market respect as Miami did two nights ago.

We cashed a 5-inning wager this week on the Padres with underrated pitcher Cory Luebke at a plus-price over Colorado’s Jeremy Guthrie. San Diego led 5-1 after five innings on its way to a 7-1 win. Today we’ll fire with another strong starter on the road at a plus price.
Matt Garza is pitching in his prime and elevating himself among the games top pitchers. Garza is 1-0 with a 1.23 ERA in two home starts this season. He has 14 strikeouts in 14+ innings with just three walks and eight hits allowed for a 0.75 WHIP. Opponents are hitting just .160 against Garza as his ground ball profile has improved and made him even tougher to hit. Last season was Garza’s first with the Cubs after coming over to the National League from Tampa Bay. Garza went just 10-10, but he was one of the stronger pitchers in the NL with a 197 Ks in 198 innings, a 1.26 WHIP, 3.32 ERA and .245 BAA. While his road ERA was over 4.50, note he allowed just three HRs in 81 innings and he’ll face an average Marlins lineup that’s hitting just .243.

MLB Handicapping: Washington's starting rotation thrives with the fastball

Article on the Washington Nationals and they stellar starting rotation which is a combined 5-1 with a 1.69 ERA and .179 BA against. They've been getting the job done in large part by
committing to the fastball
. The group's average heater is 93.4 mph – the highest mark from a rotation since FanGraphs starting tracking the data in 2002. In 74.2 innings, the starting five has amassed 108 swinging strikes.
“Against these guys, it’s like you don’t get a chance to catch your breath,” Cincinnati Reds center fielder Drew Stubbs said. “You get done with one, it’s just on to the next one. We were here for four days. All four guys, and we missed Strasburg, can hit the mid-90s. That’s tough. It’s very rare. Usually, you only have one guy in the rotation who throws like that.”
“It does go along with my philosophy,” General Manager Mike Rizzo said. “The radar readings, per se, there’s no philosophy there.

Betting against the Minnesota Timberwolves in April is not a bad idea

The last time the Minnesota Timberwolves won a game in April was back in 2009 (0-27 SU). The against-the-spread results during that span are also awful (7-20). These outcomes aren't that shocking considering that Aprils in the NBA are notorious for bringing out the best in "tank mode" from bottom-tier teams. This year's Minnesota squad however was looking to reverse that trend but a
brutal schedule
following the All-Star break and various injuries made it too difficult to overcome. The T-wolves play at Detroit tonight, host fellow "tanker" Golden State on Sunday, and close out the year vs. Denver.
