MLB Handicapping: Atlanta Braves rolling with big bats

Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Hanson) -115 at Arizona (Saunders) O/U 9

The Atlanta Braves (9-5) are having fun and scoring runs. Atlanta has scored eight or more runs in eight of its past 10 games including nine runs or more their last four contests. Their blistering bats have taken them to no. 3 in the National League in hitting (.264) and top-3 in in the NL in home runs (16). After scoring 10 and 9 runs against the Diamondbacks to win the first two games of the series at Arizona, the Braves will now take their swings against Diamondbacks lefty Joe Saunders, who has been sharp in two starts (2-0, 0.64 ERA). But a closer examination of Saunders opponents show he pitched against the two worst-hitting teams in the NL, the Pirates (.201) and Padres (.211).

The Braves are 9-1 their last 10 games with the league’s most productive offense over that stretch. They have a Read more

NBA Handicapping: Phoenix hoping to maintain playoff position with win over Denver

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Denver at Phoenix -4.5 O/U 211.5

The Phoenix Suns will try to hold onto the eighth seed in the Western Conference as they play host to Denver this afternoon. The Nuggets won and covered the previous two meetings are a 1.5 games up on the Suns in the seventh spot. Utah is tiled with Phoenix record-wise and Houston is a game back but the Suns own the tiebreaker against both teams.

“We’ve been owing Denver one this entire season,” Suns point guard Sebastian Telfair said. “The last one, we let get away from us (in Denver) when we were winning the game (in the fourth quarter). They’re coming to our home court. Our fans know we are playing for the playoffs. It should be a great atmosphere.

“I like that feeling. That’s what it’s all about. I haven’t got an opportunity in my career to Read more

NBA Betting Update: Knicks flounder in Stoudemire's return

04.21.2012     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Amar'e Stoudemire wasn't the only Knick not playing defense in last night's 98-90 loss at Cleveland. The Cavs out rebounded the Knicks 52-32. Stoudemire finished with four blocks but only three rebounds in 27 minutes of action.

“His movement and how he’s alert defensively — that’s my big concern,” Woodson said. “I’m more concerned with five guys on the floor, helping one another defend and rebound the ball. I think offensively we’ll figure it out.”

NCAA Football Gambling: Notre Dame has four QBs to choose from

04.20.2012     01:51 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We normally wait until about mid-July to post the obligatory Notre Dame Is Once Again Overrated blog. This one fails to get into much detail as the why that will occur again (it will), but does touch on how poor the quarterback play was last year and how head coach Brian Kelly must choose between four candidates – we're willing to bet a large sum of money at least three of the four start at some point. Welcome to the world of Just Barely Better Than Big Ten Average football.

MLB Betting Notes: Tampa's Moore could be tipping pitches

04.20.2012     11:03 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Minnesota (Hendriks) at Tampa Bay -165 O/U 7.5

Tampa Bay lefty Matt Moore's early season struggles may be tied to him tipping his pitches. Last time out Moore was rocked by Boston for six runs, two homers and four walks.

There were other possibilities: that Gimenez, in his first game since being called up from Triple A, was giving something away by setting up too soon, or that the Sox hitters were peeking in or somehow stealing signs. "All possibilities, I guess," Gimenez said.

"Guys were just ready to hit fastball," said Adrian Gonzalez, one of only two Red Sox hitters to swing at a breaking ball all afternoon. "When you see spin, you just lay off. A guy who throws hard, he's going to get more swings on the changeup than he is on the curveball because of the fact that it looks like a fastball. Read more

NBA Betting Alert: Boston Celtics expected to sit Big Four vs. Atlanta

04.20.2012     09:33 AM     Printer Friendly
Boston at Atlanta -10 O/U 179.5

Big line move in tonight's Atlanta-Boston matchup with the Celtics expected to sit Kevin Garnett, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo. The Celtics (37-26) have the fourth seeded locked up but if current fifth seed Atlanta (37-25) finishes with a better record, they would have home court advantage should the two teams meet in the first round. Boston's starting lineup for tonight is likely to be Avery Bradley, Keyon Dooling, Sasha Pavlovic, Brandon Bass and Greg Stiemsma.

MLB Gambling News: Scout impressed with New York's Santana, Pelfrey

04.20.2012     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
One scout had positive things to say about New York's Johan Santana despite getting hit around in his last start. The scout later went on to praise Mike Pelfrey and his new mechanics.

“I was very encouraged with what I saw from Santana,” the scout said, referring to approach, of course, not results.

“He looked the same as he did two years ago. His velocity was fine, his mechanics were good. It didn’t look like he was favoring anything. There were some seeing-eye hits, and the defense. He looked pretty good to me.”

“Pelfrey looks good with his new mechanics,” the scout said. “Not only does that give him velocity, but it gives him some deception.”

NBA Handicapping: Miami's win over Chicago leaves top seed in question

04.20.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Following last night's loss to the Heat, Chicago is no longer a lock for the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls have a 1.5 game lead with three games remaining (vs. Dallas, at Indiana, vs. Cleveland). Miami has four games remaining (vs. Washington, vs. Houston, at Boston, at Washington).

NBA Betting News: Orlando Magic prepare for postseason without Howard

04.20.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Orlando Magic prepare for life after Dwight Howard as Howard will sit the remainder of the season with a back injury.

Orlando defense WITH Howard (54 games): 92.2 ppg, 43.8% FG
Orlando defense WITHOUT Howard (8 games): 97.9 ppg, 49.3% FG

"It's a [running] little bit harder on the closeout," he said. "It's [being] a half step quicker on a rotation. It's all of those things. Just a little bit more, and I think our guys want to do it, and that's a positive."

New York at Cleveland

New York's Amar'e Stoudemire (back) is expected to make his return tonight against Cleveland. In his absence, the Knicks went 9-4 SU/ATS and allowed 92.3 ppg.

"I don't think anything," Anthony said. "We're looking forward to him coming back. That's another body that we're missing that we definitely can use. Another rebounder, another guy we can go to, we don't have to rely on me every night. So I'm looking forward to having Amar'e back."

MLB Gambling Update: Seattle's Hernandez locked in with 12 strikeouts

04.20.2012     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle's Felix Hernandez may have earned back the trust of some bettors after last night's 8-inning, 12-strikeout performance against the red hot hitting Cleveland Indians. Hernandez had shown a decline in velocity as well as an uncharacteristically backwards GB-to-FB ratio (he was a stellar 10-3 last night). According to one Mariners team blog, King Felix's change-up was the key and has morphed into one of the better pitches in the league.

Then, up stepped Shin-Soo Choo. He’d been watching Felix throw change-ups all night long. He just watched Felix put Kipnis down with two deadly change-ups. He had to know what was coming, especially if he got behind in the count.

Curveball, taken, ball one.
Fastball, foul, strike one.
Fastball, taken, strike two.
Change-up, swinging strike, strike three.

There was no doubt that Felix was going to throw Shin-Soo Choo a Read more

MLB Betting Trends: San Diego's Volquez continues 1st inning struggles

04.20.2012     06:41 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia (Hamels) -135 at San Diego (Volquez) O/U 6

We spotted this seemingly random but noteworthy trend last season: Edison Volquez always seems to struggle in the first inning. Despite moving from Cincinnati to San Diego, Volquez is once again having difficulty getting through that first frame, allowing runs in two of his three starts. Bettors looking to take advantage can get creative with prop bets of "Will there be a run scored in the 1st inning?", "Total hits+runs+errors in 1st inning?", "Team winning after the 1st inning will be?" and "Which team will score first?".

1st inning career: 92.2 IP, 6.12 ERA, 17 HRs, .857 OPS
1st inning 2012: 3.0 IP, 4 ERs, .385 BAA, .862 OPS
