NBA Gambling Notes: Kobe needs 38 points to win scoring title

04.26.2012     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Los Angeles Lakers have the third seed locked up and plan on resting the key players – except Kobe Bryant. Bryant, being the "warrior" that he is, plans on playing tonight against Sacramento but the motivation isn't necessarily to win or stay in rhythm. He needs 38 points to overtake Kevin Durant for the NBA’s scoring title. Get your prop bets ready.

"I'm not on vacation," Bryant told reporters in San Antonio after his first game back in the lineup. "I was hurt. If I'm healthy, I play."

"We'll probably rest guys, but it won't just be me saying, 'Hey, I'm going to sit you down,' " Lakers coach Mike Brown said after practice on Wednesday. "I give guys some ownership in this."

NBA Betting News: Playoff matchups to be decided on final day of regular season

04.26.2012     05:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last day of the NBA regular season and while the 16 playoff teams have been decided and few scenarios still need to be played out. There appears to be six games (Philadelphia at Detroit, Charlotte at New York, Orlando at Memphis, Denver at Minnesota, Milwaukee at Boston, and Dallas at Atlanta) that have some meaning for at least one team.

Celtics (4) vs. Hawks (5): This matchup has been set for days but who has home court is still not decided. And no, the Celtics don’t get it just because they are the four seed and won the Atlantic — the team with the better record still gets home court advantage. The Hawks have a one-game lead over the Celtics but the Celtics have the tiebreaker. Thursday night Boston needs Atlanta to lose to Dallas and for Boston to beat the Bucks. If either of those games goes the other way the series starts in Atlanta.

New York and Philadelphia are tied for the seven/eight seeds at 35-30, and New York has the tiebreaker. Which means when the Knicks beat the Bobcats Thursday

MLB Gambling News: Padres admit Petco fences should be adjusted

04.25.2012     01:39 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With home splits of .185 BA/.291 SLG/5 HRS/2.83 RPG it shouldn't come as a shock that the San Diego Padres are considering moving in the fences at Petco Park. This after a petition to allow the team to use metal bats on even number days was shot down by the MLBPA (kidding!).

“We’re open-minded and we’re seriously considering it,” Padres interim CEO Tom Garfinkel said Tuesday.

“I do believe it is too extreme right now. It will still be a pitcher’s ballpark. But a hitter should be rewarded if he crushes it. And if a team is down 4-0, they should feel there is some hope. It’s just too extreme.”

“But a solidly hit ball should be rewarded. Baseball is a match between the pitcher and the hitter. We’ve seen a number of times here where the hitter wins that battle and gets nothing to show for it.

“It should play fair. Four runs should not be an impossible deficit to overcome.”

NBA Gambling: Spurs remember last year's injury to Ginobli

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Antonio at Phoenix -2.5 O/U 205.5

Last season, with the top seed in the Western Conference locked up, San Antonio's Manu Ginobli got hurt in what was essentially a meaningless regular season game and missed Game 1 of the playoffs. The Spurs lost that game to Memphis and the eighth seeded Grizzlies went on to win the series 4-2. Similar situation tonight against Phoenix with little to nothing to play – except the top record in the league and home court throughout the playoffs. According to Sports Options, is looks as if Popovich won't risk another snafu with Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobli and Tony Parker all listed as "doubtful" due to rest. The Suns meanwhile are unlikely to put much emphasis on this game after being officially eliminated from the postseason following last night's loss at Utah.

“Everybody knew it was

LA Clippers at New York -3.5 O/U 191.5

We mentioned earlier today that the New York Knicks have something to play for despite locking up a postseason berth. The Clippers meanwhile still haven't clinched home court advantage over Memphis. LA needs a win or a Grizzlies loss to lock up the fourth seed.

"We've got to use (Wednesday's game) as a huge barometer as far as what it's going to be like in the playoffs," Paul said.

If your bookie owes you money, do everyone a favor and go about collecting your winnings in a more civilized manner than this dude...

Analetto was recorded Dec. 23 telling his bookie — now a cooperating witness for prosecutors — “I’ll (expletive) kill you,” because he owed Analetto money. He was recorded Dec. 30 telling the bookie, “I’ve got a (expletive) gun for you,” to help the bookie solve a dispute he was having with someone else. Referencing another person who owed the bookie $4,000, Analetto was taped suggesting that person’s mother be sexually assaulted.

NBA Gambling Notes: Chicago Bulls clinch top seed in the East

04.25.2012     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago at Indiana

Miami's loss to Boston last night helped the Chicago Bulls clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. The Bulls are tied with San Antonio (and own the tiebreaker) for the best record in the league with two games to play.

"We’d like to have home court all the way throughout," Carlos Boozer said. "If we have a Game 7, we’d like to have it in our building. We believe in ourselves. We’re confident what we can do."

"We don’t want to jump to the playoffs now," Thibodeau said. "We want to get ready for Indiana, have a good walkthrough, go step-by-step. That’s been our approach all year and we don’t want to change that. Home court doesn’t guarantee anything. You still have to play well."

MLB Betting News: Highly touted Parker makes debut for Oakland

04.25.2012     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago (Sale) -135 at Oakland (Parker) O/U 7.5

Quick breakdown of Oakland starter Jarrod Parker who came over in the Trevor Cahill deal. Parker was a former first round pick back in 2007 and had Tommy John surgery in 2010. He went 1-0 with a 2.18 ERA and 21 strikeouts in 20.3 innings for Triple-A Sacramento.

Parker has an accomplished repertoire of pitches, including a four-seam fastball in the mid 90s, and a slider that often makes batters look foolish. He made his big league debut last September and shut down the Dodgers, allowing no runs, four hits and a walk in 5 2/3 innings, though he wasn't involved in the decision.

NBA Betting News: New York Knicks still jockeying for playoff position

04.25.2012     06:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Clippers at New York -3.5 O/U 191.5

The Knicks are in the playoffs but who they'll face in the first round has yet to be determined.

The Knicks own the tiebreaker against both the Magic and 76ers. For the sixth seed, the Knicks will get it only if they go 2-0 and the Magic go 0-2. Assuming the Magic go at least 1-1, the Knicks are going for the No. 7 seed and they’ll get that if they go 2-0 no matter what the 76ers do, 1-1 if the 76ers go no better than 1-1 and even 0-2 if the 76ers go 0-2 as well.

Thus, Woodson said the Knicks were prepping for the Heat, Bulls and Pacers “in that order.”

“We had a big meeting [yesterday] morning about that,” he said. “We’ll continue to prep and get everything in place depending on who we draw to
