MLB Handicapping: Boston Red Sox feasting on average right-handed starters

04.27.2012     06:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Boston Red Sox are slowly hitting their way back to respectability with 43 runs, 10 homes runs, a .363 BA and 1.010 OPS over their last five games (4-1). Prior to that, they produced a more modest 4.7 runs per game, 13 home runs and a .263 BA in 13 contests (4-9). The burst of productivity however is likely tied to the level of competition. During this five-game, run-scoring bonanza they've faced nothing but mediocre, soft-tossing, right-handed starters (31 runs in 19 IP vs. Garcia, Marquis, Blackburn, Hendriks and Humber). Check out what those five games did to Boston's lefty/righty splits vs. starting pitchers.

copy_redsox_split.JPG

We'll see how they fare tonight against Chicago lefty John Danks who has a good track record against some of Boston's key bats.

Boston vs. John Danks
David Ortiz 2-for-11
Dustin Pedroia 2-for-12
Kevin Youkilis 3-for-12

Free MLB Betting Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at Baltimore Orioles

Toronto (Hutchison) -115 at Baltimore (Matusz) O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

There are numerous favorable conditions pointing toward extreme run production in this contest. Neither of the starting pitchers, Baltimore’s Brian Matusz or 21-year-old Toronto rookie Drew Hutchinson is currently demonstrating the ability to slow down opposing lineups. For Matusz, the run of poor pitching extends back to last season and the southpaw can’t seem to find positive answers. This season’s three starts have resulted in three game ERA’s of 7.20 or higher, three game WHIP’s of 1.94 or higher and three games of 18.7 pitches per inning or higher. To make matters worse, he’s been hammered by the Blue Jays going 0-3 in his four career starts and lasting only 11 innings total. He’s allowed 29 base runners in those 11 innings, six home runs and has a 13.09 ERA. Have to expect Blue Jays hitters who have a combined .904 OPS against Matusz to put up another explosive Read more

The Texas Rangers are going to tinker with their starting rotation in order to ensure converted reviler Neftali Feliz gets the proper amount of rest. Feliz tossed 8 IP and 119 pitches last Saturday and then threw an inning out of the bullpen in yesterday’s win over the Yankees.

Seattle (Noesi) at Detroit (Porcello) -205 O/U 9

The Detroit Tigers will look to avoid the three-game sweep this afternoon against Seattle. The Tigers have lost five of six (outscored 41-17). Rick Porcello is off one of the worst starts of his career (1 IP, 8 ERs) and priced as a -200 favorite for the first time in career. Porcello was right at a pick 'em his first three starts this season and has never been priced higher than -185 prior to today.

Woman wins $63K horse racing bet after risking just a dime

04.26.2012     07:10 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In sports betting circles, the term "dime bet" has long meant $1,000. But in the case of 72-year-old Julia Kring, betting a "dime" literally meant risking a little piece of copper and nickel with a side view of FDR's head. Kring’s recent 10-cent Pick Six wager at Sunland Park yielded a massive $63K (about $47K after taxes) payday. Good for you Julia!

"I saw an ad for the Sunland Pick 6 and decided to take a chance on that racetrack that day," said Kring, who has been attending the Kentucky Derby since 1970 and who routinely attends races at Keeneland Park in Lexington, Ky.

"I spent a lot of time studying, but it was all luck. I was fortunate to hit the Pick 6, but I'll take it. It was an exciting day for me. I love trying to figure out a race. There are so many things to figure out and try to pick a winner. Racing is my passion."

MLB Handicapping: Humber makes first start following perfect game

04.26.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
We compiled the results of pitchers off a no-hitter or perfect game dating back to 2006. The results have been pretty good as only Carlos Zambrano (1.2 IP, 8 ERs) and Francisco Liriano (3 IP, 4 ERs) blew up in their next outing. Chicago’s Philip Humber, who last Saturday tossed a perfect game (96 pitches) against Seattle, is a -120 home favorite vs. Boston.

NBA Gambling Notes: Kobe needs 38 points to win scoring title

04.26.2012     06:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Los Angeles Lakers have the third seed locked up and plan on resting the key players – except Kobe Bryant. Bryant, being the "warrior" that he is, plans on playing tonight against Sacramento but the motivation isn't necessarily to win or stay in rhythm. He needs 38 points to overtake Kevin Durant for the NBA’s scoring title. Get your prop bets ready.

"I'm not on vacation," Bryant told reporters in San Antonio after his first game back in the lineup. "I was hurt. If I'm healthy, I play."

"We'll probably rest guys, but it won't just be me saying, 'Hey, I'm going to sit you down,' " Lakers coach Mike Brown said after practice on Wednesday. "I give guys some ownership in this."

NBA Betting News: Playoff matchups to be decided on final day of regular season

04.26.2012     05:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Last day of the NBA regular season and while the 16 playoff teams have been decided and few scenarios still need to be played out. There appears to be six games (Philadelphia at Detroit, Charlotte at New York, Orlando at Memphis, Denver at Minnesota, Milwaukee at Boston, and Dallas at Atlanta) that have some meaning for at least one team.

Celtics (4) vs. Hawks (5): This matchup has been set for days but who has home court is still not decided. And no, the Celtics don’t get it just because they are the four seed and won the Atlantic — the team with the better record still gets home court advantage. The Hawks have a one-game lead over the Celtics but the Celtics have the tiebreaker. Thursday night Boston needs Atlanta to lose to Dallas and for Boston to beat the Bucks. If either of those games goes the other way the series starts in Atlanta.

New York and Philadelphia are tied for the seven/eight seeds at 35-30, and New York has the tiebreaker. Which means when the Knicks beat the Bobcats Thursday
