drop in velocity
. Halladay got the no-decision in yesterday's 5-2 loss to New York. He went seven innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs and struck out seven. The Phillies have lost four straight Halladay starts (-6.6 units).
"We made a few mechanical changes," he said. "Really, I felt good. I felt good last time. There’s times where you’re not getting behind the ball; you’re getting on the side of it. And your pitches can be a little bit flatter. That’s one of those things where you try and make adjustments. I felt like today, movement was better. I felt like a lot of things were better. I think it an upgrade from Brandon McCarthy to Jarrod Parker. McCarthy got pushed back and Parker will throw on regular rest. He's a highly touted arm and hasn't disappointed with two strong efforts (13 IP, 2 ERs). With above average stuff, he'll have an advantage when facing teams for the first time. Toronto's Ricky Romero has been good but not great this season with a 3.64 ERA. Off his worst start of the season (5 ERs vs. Texas) he should be good to go against an Oakland lineup that hasn't hit much of anything this season. That is especially true against lefties with pitiful splits of .206/.266/.332/.598. Play this one under.

The starting rotation for the Kansas City Royals (9-19) has been a
disaster
so far. Luke Hochevar clearly isn't right with a 9.00 ERA. Jonathan Sanchez can't find the strike zone (22 walks in 25.1 IP). Bruce Chen's act is wearing thin (12 ERs last two starts). Felipe Paulino has promise but began the year on the DL. The lone bright spot has been tonight's starter Danny Duffy (3.57 ERA) who has already had arms issues this season. As a unit, KC's starters are averaging less than five innings per game. Their K/BB ratio of 1.43 is the worst in the American League.

MLB Gambling Notes: Colorado Rockies forced to make changes to rotation

With the worst starting pitching ERA in the National League (5.75) the Colorado Rockies were forced to
shake up their rotation
. Alex White, who came over in the Ubaldo Jimenez deal, will make his seasonal debut tonight. White has started only 10 career games and owns a 7.01 ERA. Former 2008 first rounder Christian Friedrich is slated to start on Wednesday. Jeremy Guthrie (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL and will make at least one rehab start. Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) got demoted to Triple-A after getting torched his last two starts (9.2 IP, 5 HRs, 12 ERs).
"This can't continue," manager Jim Tracy said of his team's sorry starting pitching. "We have to get better."
"It would be huge for the organization if we could get some of these young guys to come up here and make an impact," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "To be able to know we would have the same four or five guys coming back from year to year would really help. This is a great opportunity for them."

The Los Angeles recently lost relief pitchers LaTroy Hawkins (finger, DL) and Scott Down (knee) to injury. In the meantime, manager Mike Scioscia is trying to come up with ways to keep the ship afloat. The Angles have the best ERA in the American League among starting pitchers (3.26) but the
worst among relievers
(4.75). The bonus however is the pen has pitched 15 fewer innings (60.2) than any team in the AL.

written by Lucky's sportsbook on Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another. It was the first time in four years that Lucky's lost with its Derby futures. A slew of tickets came from the Primm sportsbook on the boarder of California and Nevada – most likely from I'll Have Another's barn.
“It was our worst-case scenario,” said Dan Shapiro, who oversees Lucky’s horse book. “It was the first time in four years, since we started offering futures, that we lost money.”
“It’s not uncommon for them to bet on their horses,” Shapiro said. “Everyone seems to like their horse when they are training. They want to get down on their horse.”

The first month of the baseball season has come and gone, and there is no shortage of interesting stories to discuss. This week, I’ll break down the two biggest surprise teams in early season play (one positive and one negative), but this article has got to start with some discussion of the single biggest prevailing trend in all of baseball – the lack of run production in both leagues.
Hitting has declined markedly in recent years. In 2008 the AL hit a composite .268, while the NL, without the DH, hit at a .260 clip. Here in 2012, as of Monday, May 7th, the AL composite average has dropped to .248, the NL down to .249. During that same span, ERAs have dropped nearly a quarter of a run in the AL and a remarkable 3/4 of a run in the NL. 17 major league teams are currently hitting under .250 and twelve major league teams have posted ERAs under 3.50. The last time we saw MLB teams combine to hit less than .250 for a full season was back in 1972 – before the DH was introduced into the American League; a year where only one AL team (Kansas City) hit better than .250 for the full season.

According to Churchill Downs, the 138th running of the Kentucky Derby
broke records
in attendance (165,307) and betting handle ($187 million). I'll Have Another came from off the pace and won at 15-1 odds. A few proactive bettors were able to grab the colt at

Various baseball scouts feel that
New York's David Robertson
has the stuff to adequately fill Mariano Rivera's shoes. Robertson has yet to allow an earned run this season and in his last five outings (5 IP) he's walked just one batter while fanning 12.
"The one unique part about Robertson is the delivery," one American League scout said. "The baseball scientists have rated his delivery No. 1 in terms of shortest distance to the plate. Hitters have less reaction time against him, making his stuff play up."
"I would pick Robertson," a National League scout said. "Look, I like Robertson better in the eighth inning than closer but Soriano . . . He's not the pitcher with the Yankees he was with Tampa."

MLB Gambling News: Boston Red Sox are a mess, led by starting pitching

Last week, the talk of the town in Boston was high pitch counts. This time it is
lack of velocity
– most notably from Jon Lester and Josh Beckett. The Red Sox are 5-8 in their starts.
Lester has tried to adjust, relying very heavily on the sinker (25.3 percent) and adding in more changeups as well (13.2 percent). Those adjustments haven’t works thus far, as Lester has seen a huge drop in his strikeout rate (down to about six Ks per nine) and an increase in walk rate (over four walks per nine).
As for Beckett, who had his spot in the rotation skipped, it was recently revealed that his lat muscle discomfort was an issue
prior to his last start
– the one he threw 126 pitches.
"It's kind of been there for about a week, kind of leading into my last start," Beckett said. "On your start day, you can always make yourself believe that things are better than they are. I

Schlichter to serve 10 years, defense team says concussions root of problems

This sounds about right. Art Schlichter has spent the better part of his adult life as a degenerate gambler and scam artist. So it should come as no surprise than during his most recent day in court his defense team
blamed concussions
for his lifelong troubles.
"At least now, he understands there is a reason for his behavior," public defender Steven C. Nolder said in court.
Great. So while Schlichter knocks out the 10-year sentence that was handed down, he can sleep better at night knowing that his awful decision making and the people he hurt were as a result of a few blind side tackles.

This past weekend, the Palms Casino opened its newly renovated 10,000 square foot
sportsbook and poker room
. The facelift was completed by Cantor Gaming.
The new space itself greatly resembles the Cantor Gaming-operated sports books at the Hard Rock Hotel and M Resort. It’s flush with red effects, with dozens of padded seats and a wide-spanning LED screen with variable display sizes depending on the number of events scheduled. Two poker spaces are offered: one open-air area for commoners and a glassed-off space for high-limit players. Looks a little like a high-roller habitat.

Congratulations to the New York Knicks for recording their first postseason win since 2001. The Knicks defeated the Miami Heat

Sunday. Of course, it wasn't easy. Carmelo Anthony and Amar'e Stoudemire combined for 23-of-42 shooting, 16 rebounds and 61 points. And Dwyane Wade shot an uncharacteristically awful 4-of-11 from the free throw line. Nevertheless, a win is a win as the Knicks attempt to become the first team to ever win a best-of-seven series after trailing 3-0. The series resumes on Wednesday.
''It's about time,'' interim coach Mike Woodson said. ''This team is good enough to win games. We've proven that we can beat anybody in this league. But it could not happen to a better group of guys. And for the Knicks fans, I mean, they've been waiting for a long time, but it's just one game and we have a long way to go.''
