Free MLB Betting Pick: Texas Rangers at Baltimore Orioles

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas (Lewis) -120 at Baltimore (Chen) O/U 9
Recommendation: Under

Bettors spent all kinds of time breaking down starting pitching matchups. We spend hours looking at how opposing lineups match up against these starters. But when it comes to valuing bullpens correctly, bettors tend to come up short. That gives us a prime opportunity to step in with an UNDER bet this evening as the Rangers and Orioles battle in Baltimore.

Both starters here are absolutely trustworthy. Baltimore’s Wei-Yin Chen has lived up to all expectations, holding opposing batters to a combined total of nine earned runs in his first five major league starts. He’s already faced some truly potent lineups (the Yankees and Red Sox, for example), coming away with solid performances. He’s got a 2.13 ERA at Camden Yards; a “bet on” hurler right now.

The Rangers Colby Lewis has been every bit as good as Chen, holding foes to a combined total of seven earned runs in his first Read more

The Players Championship at Sawgrass Betting Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Players Championship
TPC at Sawgrass – Stadium Course
Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida
Par 72, 7,215 Yards

Annually one of the toughest tests on the PGA Tour, the Pete Dye design of TPC at Sawgrass penalizes poor shots and players that are not precise with their irons. The golf course plays firm and fast now with Bermuda grass, and the course layout and angles force players to hit their ball to similar spots and targets from the tee and fairway. The risk-reward Stadium Course can feel claustrophobic with narrow fairways lined with long strips of sand and dozens of deep, diabolically placed pot bunkers. Combined with rough-covered knolls and craters, tall trees and plenty of water, players are required to hit their targets or they find themselves with difficult recovery shots. However, players that are precise with their irons can be rewarded on the greens with properly placed shots within 20 feet of the hole. You have to bring your complete game to contend and win at Sawgrass. Players must be able to move the ball both ways off the tee with a variety of clubs and position your shots for success into the firm and fast greens. Playing Read more

MLB Betting News: Friedrich makes debut for Colorado Rockies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Colorado (Friedrich) at San Diego (Bass) -115 O/U 7

Colorado lefty Christian Friedrich will make his MLB debut tonight in San Diego. Friedrich was a first round draft pick back in 2008. He was at one point the third-best prospect in the Rockies organization but his stock dropped some over the last three seasons due to injuries. His strikeout numbers are decent with 208 in 250.2 IP at Double-A and Triple-A. He throws in the low 90's and features a curveball and change-up.

MLB Handicapping Notes: Totals in the month of May

05.09.2012     07:37 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Our rampage continues this week with another top-play 20* Big Drive winner as our American League Over/Under Game of the Month cashes in the Rangers’ romp over the Orioles, 10-3. The highest scoring game on the MLB card was highlighted by Josh Hamilton’s four home run performance. It gave us our fourth-straight MLB winner and nearly +7 units of MLB profit in the month of May.

Here’s some MLB totals information to add to your handicapping arsenal. The month of May has been a profit-producer playing UNDERS lined at 10 or more runs. Over the past decade, there has been over 500 games lined at 10 runs or higher in the month of May and the under has cashed at nearly a 56% rate.  Healthy pitching and fresh arms are still seemingly prevalent in the early season and the weather has not yet hit the higher temperatures that often result in more runs scored.

This season we’re seeing fewer runs scored and much less offensive production, and there are fewer games lined at 10 runs or higher. However, there is a situation to look for that can increase the percentages of winning these UNDER the total wagers, and it involves winning teams as home Read more

Casino plans for Foxborough, Mass. canceled

05.09.2012     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
Steve Wynn and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft announced that plans to build a casino next to Gillette Stadium are a no go. Under state law, casino developers must first get the thumbs up from the town – something Foxborough obviously didn't agree to.

"With Monday's election, we believe the citizens of Foxborough have spoken," The Kraft Group said in a statement. "As we originally committed, we have heard them and respect their collective voice."

New Jersey's online gambling push slowed by Christie's potential VP run

05.09.2012     06:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It took a while but over the last year we've seen New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie warm up to the idea of online gambling. That progress though seems to have slowed now that Christie's name is being tossed around the Mitt Romney running mate discussion.

"Christie is putting the future of A.C. in jeopardy because of his overriding concern for support from [Sheldon] Adelson, a right-wing money machine of Newt Gingrich and right-wing causes; Caesars, a huge contributor based in Nevada; and Woody Johnson, Jets owner and NFL opponent of sports gaming," Sen. Raymond Lesniak (D., Union) wrote last week in an e-mail, not long after a meeting with Christie's staff.

"Atlantic City casino revenues have declined 29 of the 30 months since Gov. Christie's been in office," Lesniak said. "Internet gaming will add $200 million a year to their revenues, and likely will make the difference between some closing or staying open and saving hundreds of jobs."

Betting MLB Totals: A look back at May 8, 2008

05.08.2012     02:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Out of curiosity, when went back using Sports Option's archives and checked what the totals were on this date four years ago. The Steroid Era was over by 2008 but it is amazing to see how much higher the totals were than what we have seen the last two seasons. On today's card, there are two games line at 7 and two more at 6.5. On this date in 2008, the lowest total was 7.5 – a damp day in Pittsburgh with two sub-par offenses. Just for fun, in the parenthesis, we put an estimate of what the totals for those exact matchups would be if they took place today.

May 8, 2008
Matchups (Pitcher) Total (Estimated Total 2012)

San Francisco (Cain) at Pittsburgh (Maholm) 7.5 (7)

San Diego (Ledezma) at Atlanta (Reyes) 10 (8.5)

St. Louis (Lohse) at Colorado (De La Rosa) 10.5 (9.5)

Philadelphia (Meyers) at Arizona (Webb) 8 (7.5 with roof closed, 8.5 with roof open)

Milwaukee (Villanueva) at Florida (Hendrickson) 9.5 (7.5 in new stadium)

Washington (Lannan) at Houston (Backe) 9.5 (8)

Cleveland (Byrd) at New York (Mussina) 10 (9)

MLB Betting Update: Halladay pleased with performance vs. Mets

05.08.2012     12:14 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Roy Halladay responds to his drop in velocity. Halladay got the no-decision in yesterday's 5-2 loss to New York. He went seven innings, allowed five hits and two earned runs and struck out seven. The Phillies have lost four straight Halladay starts (-6.6 units).

"We made a few mechanical changes," he said. "Really, I felt good. I felt good last time. There’s times where you’re not getting behind the ball; you’re getting on the side of it. And your pitches can be a little bit flatter. That’s one of those things where you try and make adjustments. I felt like today, movement was better. I felt like a lot of things were better. Was happy with the adjustments we made. It’s tough to go out and feel like you’re doing what you need to do and still coming up a little short. I felt like the changes we made were good and like the movement was better today than it Read more

Free MLB Betting Pick: Toronto Blue Jays at Oakland A's

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto -130 (Romero) at Oakland (Parker) O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

I think it an upgrade from Brandon McCarthy to Jarrod Parker. McCarthy got pushed back and Parker will throw on regular rest. He's a highly touted arm and hasn't disappointed with two strong efforts (13 IP, 2 ERs). With above average stuff, he'll have an advantage when facing teams for the first time. Toronto's Ricky Romero has been good but not great this season with a 3.64 ERA. Off his worst start of the season (5 ERs vs. Texas) he should be good to go against an Oakland lineup that hasn't hit much of anything this season. That is especially true against lefties with pitiful splits of .206/.266/.332/.598. Play this one under.

MLB Handicapping: Kansas City going nowhere with suspect rotation

05.08.2012     08:18 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The starting rotation for the Kansas City Royals (9-19) has been a disaster so far. Luke Hochevar clearly isn't right with a 9.00 ERA. Jonathan Sanchez can't find the strike zone (22 walks in 25.1 IP). Bruce Chen's act is wearing thin (12 ERs last two starts). Felipe Paulino has promise but began the year on the DL. The lone bright spot has been tonight's starter Danny Duffy (3.57 ERA) who has already had arms issues this season. As a unit, KC's starters are averaging less than five innings per game. Their K/BB ratio of 1.43 is the worst in the American League.

MLB Gambling Notes: Colorado Rockies forced to make changes to rotation

05.08.2012     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
With the worst starting pitching ERA in the National League (5.75) the Colorado Rockies were forced to shake up their rotation. Alex White, who came over in the Ubaldo Jimenez deal, will make his seasonal debut tonight. White has started only 10 career games and owns a 7.01 ERA. Former 2008 first rounder Christian Friedrich is slated to start on Wednesday. Jeremy Guthrie (shoulder) is on the 15-day DL and will make at least one rehab start. Jhoulys Chacin (shoulder) got demoted to Triple-A after getting torched his last two starts (9.2 IP, 5 HRs, 12 ERs).

"This can't continue," manager Jim Tracy said of his team's sorry starting pitching. "We have to get better."

"It would be huge for the organization if we could get some of these young guys to come up here and make an impact," shortstop Troy Tulowitzki said. "To be able to know we would have the same four or five guys coming back from year to year would really help. This is a great opportunity for them."

MLB Betting News: LA Angels lose two arms from an already shaky bullpen

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Los Angeles recently lost relief pitchers LaTroy Hawkins (finger, DL) and Scott Down (knee) to injury. In the meantime, manager Mike Scioscia is trying to come up with ways to keep the ship afloat. The Angles have the best ERA in the American League among starting pitchers (3.26) but the worst among relievers (4.75). The bonus however is the pen has pitched 15 fewer innings (60.2) than any team in the AL.

NBA Playoff Gambling: Chicago Bulls try to avoid elimination without Noah

05.08.2012     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Philadelphia at Chicago -5 O/U 171.5

Do or die for the Chicago Bulls tonight as they trail Philadelphia 3-1 in the series. It looks extremely doubtful that Joakim Noah (ankle) will be able to suit up. Chicago head coach Tom Thibodeau feels that his team needs to be more aggressive in attacking the basket. The 76ers have attempted 110 free throws during the series while the Bulls have taken only 79 (and made 52).

"We have to attack," Thibodeau said. "We had some good hard drives. We didn’t get the calls. We have to keep going, drive with more force."

"It feels weird to be on the verge of being eliminated after having such a great season and putting so much work in during the offseason," he said. "It’s really hard to think Read more

California's Thunder Valley Casino inked a deal with bwin.party to offer online poker should it become legalized.

“California is the largest state in the US in terms of population and is known to have a significant number of poker players who like to play poker online. I'll Have Another's workers likely source of early bets at small town sportsbook

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Details of the 200-1 tickets written by Lucky's sportsbook on Kentucky Derby winner I'll Have Another. It was the first time in four years that Lucky's lost with its Derby futures. A slew of tickets came from the Primm sportsbook on the boarder of California and Nevada – most likely from I'll Have Another's barn.

“It was our worst-case scenario,” said Dan Shapiro, who oversees Lucky’s horse book. “It was the first time in four years, since we started offering futures, that we lost money.”

“It’s not uncommon for them to bet on their horses,” Shapiro said. “Everyone seems to like their horse when they are training. They want to get down on their horse.”
