MLB Handicapping: Struggles lead to closed door meeting for Phillies

05.11.2012     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Pegged to win the National League East and beyond, the Philadelphia Phillies find themselves four games under .500 and losers of five of their last six. The poor start prompted manager Charlie Manuel to hold a closed door meeting with the hopes of sparking a turnaround. Note that the Phillies are 2-7 against left-handed starters and face San Diego's Clayton Richard tonight.

"After I watched that game, I felt it was necessary," Manuel said. "[Tuesday] night I knew exactly what to tell them. There was a lot of things going through my mind. I knew exactly what I could tell them, what I needed to tell them. I've been wanting to talk to them for a while."

MLB Betting News: Baltimore calls up lefty Eveland for spot start

05.11.2012     07:28 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Tampa Bay (Hellickson) -125 at Baltimore (Eveland) O/U 9

With Jason Hammel (knee) on the shelf, the Baltimore Orioles called up veteran Dana Eveland for a spot start tonight against Tampa Bay. Eveland has pitched well in Triple-A with a 2.21 ERA.

"He had a good year in a very hitter-friendly park in Triple-A and has had some success at times in the big leagues," Showalter said. "He's pitching real well down there, pitching as well as any of their starters are, so I think we're lucky to have him. We'll see if Tampa agrees with me."

MLB Betting News: Boston's Buchholz desperate for a good outing

05.11.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Cleveland (Jimenez) at Boston (Buchholz) -115 O/U 10

Boston's Clay Buchholz may be on borrowed time as he takes the mound tonight against Cleveland. Buchholz sports the worst ERA (9.09), WHIP (2.02) and FIP (7.63) among qualified pitchers. One of his biggest problems has been avoiding the big inning.

“It’s been a rough six starts to start the season off. There’s been times where in an outing you’re thinking about, ‘OK, this is going to be the outing that changes everything.’ And then something, a big inning happens and it brings you back to square one. So that’s what I’ve been doing, figure out a way to minimize the damage in those big innings. I was just

MLB Gambling Notes: Bettors must deal with suspect bullpens

05.11.2012     07:08 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Article from FanGraphs about the league-wide epidemic of bad bullpens. To start, a host of established late inning arms are injured (Madson, Wilson, Storen, Rivera, Soria, Santos, Street and Bailey). Then you have guys moving from the pen to the starting rotation (Bard, Sale). And those who are healthy are getting smacked around (Marmol, Bell, Walden and Axford to name a few). As bettors, our lone saving grace with some of these games has been the 5-inning line.

Odds of online gambling increase for New Jersey

05.10.2012     02:03 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Just like the Chicago Cubs will eventually win a World Series, legalized online gambling in the state of New Jersey will get passed. When those two things occur and in what order though seems to be a coin flip at this point. According to reports, the Garden State took yet another baby step forward by advancing internet gambling legislation this morning. We're pulling for you New Jersey and eager for the day when not only can you exercise your right to bet online but Sportsmemo can take a break from blogging about what it took to get there.

"This is another key piece of our effort to boost New Jersey's gaming industry by expanding and modernizing our wagering options," he said later in a release. "This will rejuvenate our tourist industry while increasing employment, capital investment and much needed urban redevelopment."

MLB Gambling Notes: Lincecum picks up velocity in loss to Dodgers

05.10.2012     12:20 PM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Tim Lincecum is still not "right" but we saw a somewhat better performance last night against the Dodgers. He was motoring along until giving up four runs in the fourth inning. Lincecum finished with eight strikeouts and was consistently above 90 mph on the gun. San Francisco though fell to 2-5 in his starts. The fact that he continues to take the mound suggests that nothing is seriously wrong health-wise but we obviously can't recommend anything but betting against or staying away until some drastically changes.

MLB Betting Notes: Baltimore shuffles rotation with Hammel out

05.10.2012     11:35 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Keep an eye on Baltimore's pitching rotation over the next week. Jason Hammel got bumped due to knee soreness – the same knee he had surgery on back in 2008. He has without question been the team's best pitcher (2.09 ERA, 5-1 in his starts). We could see Dana Eveland and/or Chris Tillman here in the not-so-distant future.

"I can't really drive off my back leg," Hammel said before Wednesday night's game was postponed. "It was getting worse and worse, so I think the smart thing to do is give it a couple days, if we can, to kind of calm it down instead of missing a month or a month and a half or more. And we'll go from there."

"Obviously, I'm not too happy about it," Hammel said. "But it's just the smartest thing to do for right now. I need to help this team down the road. Initially, one start instead of trying to battle through it and it keep getting worse and worse, maybe something bigger would happen. We will see if we can get it

MLB Handicapping: Despite dimensions, Marlins Stadium trending OVER the total

05.10.2012     11:26 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Article from ESPN about spacious ballparks, most notably Miami's new Marlins Park. It has no questioned played big (26th home run rate) but it appears that oddsmakers and the betting markets may be overreacting with totals now 7-3-1 O/U. Meanwhile, New York's decision to move in the fences has yielded eight more home runs that wouldn't have made it last season. Still, Citi Field plays big (27th in home run rate) and totals are 5-10-1 O/U.

"I know this is going to come across as complaining, but it's really not," Stanton says. "It's reality. It's what we've got to deal with. Every guy who comes in says the same thing: It's terrible for hitters. They get to first base and they say it, second base and they say it, third and they say it. If everybody's saying it, it's reality."

Priest asks for gig back after epic losing streak at casino

MLB Handicapping: Blue Jays play musical chairs with bullpen

05.10.2012     07:44 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
The Toronto Blue Jays are one of many teams who have had late game issues due to their bullpen. They lead the American League in blown saves (7) and ERA (4.63). Sergio Santos botched two of four chances before hitting the DL. He just resumed throwing but no word on an exact return. The Francisco Cordero experiment didn't work (9.53 ERA, three blown saves). Casey Janssen notched a save last night and will remain the team's closer until Santos returns.

Chicago at Philadelphia -3 O/U 169

Cantor Gaming looking to build an empire

05.10.2012     07:17 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Article on the rise of Cantor Fitzgerald. Known for taking big bets, Cantor's handle for the Super Bowl was reportedly $2 million.

"The idea that we can bring so much technological innovation to that market is a great opportunity,'' says Lutnick, 50. "I think it will dramatically add to the size of the market.''

"All of that outside of Nevada is offshore and illegal,'' Cantor's Garrood says. "If that doesn't give you a hint of the opportunity, then you're just ignoring the data.''

Betting action hints that Greece will leave euro zone

05.10.2012     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
If you follow the news at all, you are probably aware that Greece's political situation is pretty messy. British sportsbooks William Hill and Ladbrokes were so lopsided on bets for Greece to leave the euro zone that they were forced to take it off of the board.

"It is safer for us to suspend betting than to keep cutting the odds," a spokesman for Ladbrokes said. "We have been slashing the odds repeatedly over the last few days."

"We've had Greece as hot favorites for some time but increasingly it was becoming the only one that people wanted to bet on," said a spokesman for William Hill, Britain's largest betting firm.

"It wasn't a healthy situation for bookmakers. We found it was virtually impossible to make a book."

MLB Betting News: Boston's Beckett back after skipped start

05.10.2012     06:42 AM     Printer Friendly blog entry.
Boston's Josh Beckett was reportedly spotted golfing the day before his start was skipped due to a sore lat muscle. Probably not that big of a deal but between Beckett’s lack of velocity, high pitch counts, skipped start, sore arm, and so-so results (4.45 ERA), there remains no shortage of issues for the veteran right hander.

"Golf is as much a part of the pitching culture as a curveball, I know that for sure," Valentine said.

"I don't know if he was out at a charity match, just putting, or if he was whaling away and felt that might have loosened things up. I have no idea what the situation actually is, so it's hard for me to comment on it.

"If that was the case [that he played golf and drove the ball], I would say that was less than the best thing to do on that day off."
