New York's Andy Pettitte will make his
seasonal debut
on Sunday against the Mariners. Pettitte made six minor league starts and allowed 14 earned runs in 27.2 innings.
“I feel like my strength is there,” Pettitte said. “My legs are under me well. (It’s) two starts in a row that I went into 90 pitches, and that’s kind of where they wanted me to get and I feel good about it. My last outing was probably my worst outing as far as how I’ve felt, as far as the feel of stuff. So it’s really hard to take a read on these minor league starts.”

Pegged to win the National League East and beyond, the Philadelphia Phillies find themselves four games under .500 and losers of five of their last six. The poor start prompted manager Charlie Manuel to hold a
closed door meeting
with the hopes of sparking a turnaround. Note that the Phillies are 2-7 against left-handed starters and face San Diego's Clayton Richard tonight.
"After I watched that game, I felt it was necessary," Manuel said. "[Tuesday] night I knew exactly what to tell them. There was a lot of things going through my mind. I knew exactly what I could tell them, what I needed to tell them. I've been wanting to talk to them for a while."

for a spot start tonight against Tampa Bay. Eveland has pitched well in Triple-A with a 2.21 ERA.
"He had a good year in a very hitter-friendly park in Triple-A and has had some success at times in the big leagues," Showalter said. "He's pitching real well down there, pitching as well as any of their starters are, so I think we're lucky to have him. We'll see if Tampa agrees with me."

Just like the Chicago Cubs will eventually win a World Series,

in the state of New Jersey will get passed. When those two things occur and in what order though seems to be a coin flip at this point. According to reports, the Garden State took yet another baby step forward by advancing internet gambling legislation this morning. We're pulling for you New Jersey and eager for the day when not only can you exercise your right to bet online but Sportsmemo can take a break from blogging about what it took to get there.

MLB Gambling Notes: Lincecum picks up velocity in loss to Dodgers

Tim Lincecum is still not "right" but we saw a
somewhat better performance
last night against the Dodgers. He was motoring along until giving up four runs in the fourth inning. Lincecum finished with eight strikeouts and was consistently above 90 mph on the gun. San Francisco though fell to 2-5 in his starts. The fact that he continues to take the mound suggests that nothing is seriously wrong health-wise but we obviously can't recommend anything but betting against or staying away until some drastically changes.

Keep an eye on Baltimore's
pitching rotation
over the next week. Jason Hammel got bumped due to knee soreness – the same knee he had surgery on back in 2008. He has without question been the team's best pitcher (2.09 ERA, 5-1 in his starts). We could see Dana Eveland and/or Chris Tillman here in the not-so-distant future.
"I can't really drive off my back leg," Hammel said before Wednesday night's game was postponed. "It was getting worse and worse, so I think the smart thing to do is give it a couple days, if we can, to kind of calm it down instead of missing a month or a month and a half or more. And we'll go from there."
"Obviously, I'm not too happy about it," Hammel said. "But it's just the smartest thing to do for right now. I need to help this team down the road. Initially, one start instead of trying to battle through it and it keep getting worse and worse, maybe something bigger would happen. We will see if we can get it

Still, Citi Field plays big (27th in home run rate) and totals are 5-10-1 O/U.
"I know this is going to come across as complaining, but it's really not," Stanton says. "It's reality. It's what we've got to deal with. (7) and ERA (4.63). Sergio Santos botched two of four chances before hitting the DL. He just resumed throwing but no word on an exact return. The Francisco Cordero experiment didn't work (9.53 ERA, three blown saves). Casey Janssen notched a save last night and will remain the team's closer until Santos returns.

Betting action hints that Greece will leave euro zone

If you follow the news at all, you are probably aware that Greece's
political situation
is pretty messy. British sportsbooks William Hill and Ladbrokes were so lopsided on bets for Greece to leave the euro zone that they were forced to take it off of the board.
"It is safer for us to suspend betting than to keep cutting the odds," a spokesman for Ladbrokes said. "We have been slashing the odds repeatedly over the last few days."
"We've had Greece as hot favorites for some time but increasingly it was becoming the only one that people wanted to bet on," said a spokesman for William Hill, Britain's largest betting firm.
"It wasn't a healthy situation for bookmakers. We found it was virtually impossible to make a book."

the day before his start was skipped due to a sore lat muscle. Probably not that big of a deal but between Beckett’s lack of velocity, high pitch counts, skipped start, sore arm, and so-so results (4.45 ERA), there remains no shortage of issues for the veteran right hander.
"Golf is as much a part of the pitching culture as a curveball, I know that for sure," Valentine said.
"I don't know if he was out at a charity match, just putting, or if he was whaling away and felt that might have loosened things up. I have no idea what the situation actually is, so it's hard for me to comment on it.
"If that was the case [that he played golf and drove the ball], I would say that was less than the best thing to do on that day off."
