Nevada needs to create safe environment for online gambling

05.15.2012     01:03 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the security measures needed to be put in place before poker goes online in Nevada. Not only do players need to feel confident that their money and information is safe but companies must be able to identify suspicious activities.

“With all those elements in place, you’d think a red flag would go up somewhere,” Ryan said. “Some companies just don’t have the level of security in place that they should.”

Ryan said his company had systems to detect players by location and by age. The system can also thwart excluded players, potential problem gamblers, individuals who have self-excluded themselves, potential money launderers and frauds and players engaged in collusion.

NBA Playoff Betting Notes: Miami now -6.5 vs. Indiana for Game 2

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Indiana at Miami -6.5 O/U 186

Some news and notes on tonight's Game 2 matchup between Indiana and Miami.

Indiana head coach Frank Vogel didn't blame the refs for Game 1's loss but he willingly took a fine to let them know the Heat do a lot of flopping.

‘(The Heat) are the biggest flopping team in the NBA,’ Vogel said to the media Thursday. ‘It’ll be very interesting to see how the referees officiate the series and how much flopping they reward. Every drive to the basket, they have guys not making a play on the ball,’ Vogel continued, ‘but sliding in front of drivers. Oftentimes they’re falling down even before contact is even being made.’”

If you are a monk, you apparently aren't allowed to let loose – at all

Sorry, but we don't see what all the fuss is about with these Buddhist monks partaking in a little drinking and poker with the boys. If you're going to list "vows of individual liberation" as your calling card, well, these types of things are bound to happen. The real issue is finding the buzz kill that filmed it. Not very Zen-like if you ask us.

NBA Handicapping: Winning Wagers on Round 2 Home Favorites

05.15.2012     08:07 AM         Printer Friendly
Submitted by

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We cashed a pair of NBA winners last night when the 76ers (+4.5) beat Boston outright and the Thunder (-7.5) romped over the LA Lakers 119-90. Miami and Oklahoma City won and covered their opening games in Round 2, and those victories highlight a proven and profitable playoff parameter on Round 2 home favorites.

Over the past decade, Round 2 home favorites have experienced more success than any other round of the NBA playoffs. Miami won and covered all three home games as favorite last season against Boston, and NBA home favorites have covered over 58% of their games since the start of the 2003 playoffs (sample size over 170 games).

That’s a solid base situation with a large sample size. This season, Round 2 home favorites are 2-2 as the Celtics failed to cover either game, and last season those Round 2 home favorites went 11-4. But add in this line parameter and the bigger home favorites provide a stronger profitable profile. Since 2003, home favorites of -5 or more points are now 84-22 straight-up and 67-38-1 ATS (64%).  In fact, over the past 30+ games, these home favorites of -5 or more points have covered over 70% of the time! That includes 2-0 Read more

MLB Betting News: Injuries take their toll on Washington Nationals

05.15.2012     07:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Things have gone extremely well for the Washington Nationals (22-13) this season but injuries are starting to mount. Within the span of three days, the Nats lost catchers Wilson Ramos (ACL) and Sandy Leon (ankle) – Leon was injured in his MLB debut last night. That leaves Jesus Flores and likely Triple-A call-up Carlos Maldonado. Flores is a downgrade offensively from Ramos but the pitching staff has near perfect numbers with him behind the plate (13 games, 1.92 ERA, .155 BAA). Things could get tricky though when Flores needs a break. Maldonado caught sparingly last season and has only 17 career starts under his belt since 2006. Overall, Washington has 10 players currently on the DL.

New Jersey residents say no to online gambling, but yes to sports betting

05.15.2012     06:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This makes sense. According to a recent poll, 58% of New Jersey residents are against the legalization of online gambling. But the same amount favors the legalization of sports betting.

"Online gambling may be a good bet for new state revenue, but lots of voters don't think it's a good bet for New Jersey," said Peter Woolley, director of the poll. "I suppose there is something to be said for losing money without the inconvenience of leaving town, but that's usually called property tax or alimony."

Nevada eyes online poker by the end of 2012

Nevada Gaming Control Board Chairman Mark Lipparelli said that the state will issue its first online poker license within the next two months – with the hopes of providing actual games by the end of 2012. For all of the online legalization talk throughout the country, Nevada remains the only state where online gambling has been legislatively authorized.

Sharp bettors see Oklahoma City Thunder with multiple edges over Los Angeles Lakers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The opening round of the NBA Playoffs is already in the history books, and we’ve got some compelling matchups as Round 2 begins.  Let’s take a whirlwind tour around the NBA, examining some of the prevailing issues for each series from a betting perspective.

The most hyped series of them all is this Lakers-Thunder showdown, a series where the general public and the wiseguys seem to be valuing these teams very differently.  The public looks at LA and sees a team that won two recent championships with their current corps of players; a team with a rested and healthy Metta World Peace back in the lineup; a team that stepped up during crunch time of Game 7 in Round 1 thanks to passionate efforts from big men Andrew Bynum and Pau Gasol, and a team that has gotten significantly better since acquiring point guard Ramon Sessions at the trading deadline.

Wiseguys look at the Lakers and see an older team that can’t match the Thunder’s youth and energy.  Sharp bettors have pounded Oklahoma City on the series price, bet up as high as -460 prior to Game 1.  They give OKC an edge in nearly every department, preferring Kevin Read more

NBA Playoff Handicapping: Clippers have hands full vs. Popovich and Spurs

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The opening round of the NBA Playoffs is already in the history books, and we’ve got some compelling matchups as Round 2 begins.  Let’s take a whirlwind tour around the NBA, examining some of the prevailing issues for each series from a betting perspective.

The Spurs-Clippers series has drawn a lot of attention in handicapping circles for one reason – a complete coaching mismatch.  San Antonio’s Gregg Popovich is a tactical genius, plain and simple, earning another NBA Coach of the Year award in 2012.  His veteran stars – Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Tim Duncan – all buy into what he is preaching 110%.  Parker, in particular, is as close to a head coach on the floor as you’ll find in the NBA these days.
Popovich certainly recognized the effect of his veteran leaders on their teammates. “Every NBA team had the same problem as far as developing rookies, bringing in free agents, rounding out the team. Leadership here from Tony, Manu and Tim has been spectacular. They set the tone and were very committed.”

Earlier today, Diner was sentenced to six years’ probation and is on the IRS’s radar after claiming no more than $36K a year in income.

NBA Playoff Betting News: Miami Heat pick up late spread cover over Indiana Pacers

The opening round of the NBA Playoffs is already in the history books, and we’ve got some compelling matchups as Round 2 begins. Let’s take a whirlwind tour around the NBA, examining some of the prevailing issues for each series from a betting perspective.

Indiana’s Game 1 loss to the Heat wasn’t anywhere near as bad as the two blowout regular season losses they suffered at the hands of Miami: 118-83 and 105-90. In both of those blowout losses, the Heat were able to force turnovers in bunches (39 in the two games combined), leading to easy fast break buckets the other way. With fast break layups galore, the Heat shot 50% or better in both games. Miami’s perimeter defense also had great success shutting down Indiana’s perimeter shooting threats, holding the Pacers to a combined 7-of-34 from three-point range.

But each of the last three meetings – a two point Pacers loss in OT at Miami, a 15 point Pacers win at home, and Sunday’s nine point Miami home win – have been much more competitive, in large part, because Indiana has been able to cut down those turnovers. Yes, Miami played the better end game in Read more

NBA Playoff Gambling Report: Boston looks to take 2-0 lead over Philadelphia

The opening round of the NBA Playoffs is already in the history books, and we’ve got some compelling matchups as Round 2 begins. Let’s take a whirlwind tour around the NBA, examining some of the prevailing issues for each series from a betting perspective.

The betting markets often struggle to accept that teams can change their stripes in the postseason, performing at a very different level than they did during the regular season. Philadelphia is a prime example; not the same team now that they were a month or two ago, when they struggled mightily to step up in class.

Philly is healthy. They are confident after squeaking by the injury riddled Bulls in the first round. And they’re getting dramatically improved play from two key starters right now; the biggest reason why Boston is the single shortest favorite on the series price futures betting board even after their Game 1 victory, rallying back from a double digit deficit to escape with the one point win.

The two biggest personnel differences for the 76ers now compared to the regular season are Evan Turner and Spencer Hawes. Turner was the #2 overall pick in the draft last Read more

MLB Betting News: Boston's Lester tries to regain form vs. Seattle

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Vargas) at Boston (Lester) -175 O/U 9

Boston's Jon Lester has been in grind-it-out mode of late. High pitch counts and lack of command have cut short a few outings. After averaging about a strikeout per inning the previous two seasons, Lester has fanned only 28 in 42 innings.

"Just too many pitches. That was kind of a theme throughout the game," Lester said. "I took too many pitches to get guys out. And it's bad because I feel like I had great stuff."

"I've just got to keep grinding away. It sucks to say. I hate saying it. I want to win as much as everybody in this clubhouse. I've got to keep showing up and keep trying to execute pitches. That's all I can control," he said. "We've got to keep showing up and keep grinding, putting together those good at-bats and those good plans. It'll turn around for Read more

Manchester City's crazy EPL win causes stir in betting markets

05.14.2012     06:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The betting markets went wild during Manchester City's improbable come-from-behind, injury time victory over Queens Park Rangers on Sunday that clinched the Premier League title.

In the final stages of Sunday's action bookies were still offering odds of 1-33 on United to win the title, and several firms reported hundreds of punters putting vast amounts on the Red Devils to win the title in order to make a quick and seemingly risk-free 3 per cent profit.

Needing to beat QPR to match Manchester United's 1-0 win at Sunderland, City were as big as 33-1 with Boylesports – and trading at 40 on Betfair – as they trailed 2-1 with five minutes of added time
due to be played.

"We've never known five minutes like it," said Ladbrokes spokesman David Williams. "United fans got greedy. The smell of burnt fingers around Old Trafford is overwhelming."

As Alex Ferguson would say, "Football, eh?... Bloody hell."
