LA Angels (Haren) -155 at San Diego (Stults) O/U 6.5

You have to feel bad for San Diego's Tim Stauffer (elbow) who for the second time this season was placed on the DL – after only one start. He was slated to throw tonight but instead, Eric Stults, who was just claimed off of waivers, will get the nod against the Angels.

MLB Betting Notes: Cobb starts for Tampa Bay Rays

05.19.2012     06:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Delgado) at Tampa Bay (Cobb) -110 O/U 8.5

With Jeff Niemann on the DL, the Tampa Bay Rays called up Alex Cobb to start today against Atlanta. Cobb made nine starts last season (3.42 ERA).

"I think all my velocity's back," said Cobb, whose 2011 season got cut short due to season-ending surgery to remove a blood clot and blockage in the area of his first right rib. "I have a good feel for my offspeed pitches. I did have one bad start and another start I was sick, so I don't really look too much into that one. I had to come out in the second. Other than those two starts, I've been feeling pretty good."

MLB Betting Notes: Holy cow! The Houston Astros are playing decent baseball

05.18.2012     02:00 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
I've stated a few times on the Sportsmemo Podcast that the Houston Astros (17-21) have from a statistical standpoint underachieved this season. Hard to believe consider few if any would have predicted that in mid-May they'd be only four games under .500 and in fourth place in the National League Central. The Astros rank fifth in the NL in run differential (+0.3). That equates to a Pythagorean W-L record of 20-18. And it isn't like they caught a three-week wave of easy scheduling. Twenty-seven of their 38 games have come against teams above .500. And nearly 50% of their games (18) were against the National East – a division in which everyone currently has a winning record and all but the Mets have a positive run differential. On the flip side, the Astros have played just six games vs. the NL West – a division with only one winning record (Los Angeles) and four of five teams with negative run differentials. What does this all mean? I'm not sure, especially with such a small sample size. And despite overachieving (which for Houston is mediocrity) they are barely profitable on the season (+1.25 units) so I’d refrain from a “bet on blindly” philosophy. It Read more

NBA Playoff Gambling Notes: Miami Heat cancel Friday practice

05.18.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
The Miami Heat canceled practice and media requests following Thursday's blowout loss at Indiana. What does it mean? Probably nothing. Maybe they went bowling. But don't tell that to ESPN's Stephen A. Smith who was quoted as saying, "Clearly an implosion is taking place." He later went on to reference Alonzo Mourning and Tim Hardaway for whatever reason.

Preakness fails to draw much betting interest

05.18.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
Chad Millman's latest blog breaks down the ho-hum betting atmosphere of the Preakness with Wynn oddsmaker John Avello.

"These are horses that never would have been in the Derby," says Avello. Plus, it's a shorter race, which means Bodemeister, who ran beautifully for three-quarters of the Derby, is a prohibitive favorite in a weaker field. "The turns are tighter," says Avello. "You want to be in the top four or five spots early because if not, it becomes more difficult, because front-runners have an advantage. It is a speed track, and those turns don't allow for horses to be on the outside and get position."

"Honestly, I may skip the race as far as betting," says Avello. "Bodemeister is the best bet, but the odds are too short for me and that is not my style."

Las Vegas casino scam artist slated for lengthy prison term

Here is a dude that scammed three Las Vegas casinos out of $1 million. His punishment is road-side cleanup crew for a few weekends and a jail sentence of up to 360 years.

“Shang deceived the casinos into believing that the recruits had sufficient funds to pay back the casinos. In doing so, the defendant caused monetary losses to the casinos while enriching himself with proceeds from the fraudulent scheme.”

The Pacers now hold a 2-1 series lead. Miami, who opened the series as a -900 favorite, remains the chalk albeit at the much shorter price of -135.

Miami results off of two straight losses (5-1 SU/ATS) this season

105-82 Win (-15.5) vs. Charlotte
