UPDATE

A gentleman involved in the alleged University of San Diego point shaving scandal has pled guilty to conspiracy to commit sports bribery and conduct illegal gambling business. Whether or not this proves games involving the Toreros were actually fixed remains to be seen.

MLB Betting Update: Bettors continue to key in on Busch Stadium OVERS

05.25.2012     10:54 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Philadelphia (Lee) at -115 at St. Louis (Lohse) O/U 7.5

The betting markets were spot on in betting last night's Philadelphia-St. Louis game over the total. In fact, bettors on the over cashed their tickets midway through the third inning as the Phillies went on to win 10-9 with both teams combining for 33 hits. Tonight's total was crushed again, moving from an opener of 7 to as high as 8 (7.5 the prevailing number). Totals at Busch Stadium are now 16-5 O/U on the season.

Washington (Detwiler) at Atlanta (Hudson) -150 O/U 7

The Atlanta Braves look to snap their four-game losing streak tonight against Washington. Note that the Braves have played a very road-heavy schedule with 29 of their 46 games on the highway including seven straight heading into tonight. Tim Hudson is 52-27 lifetime at Turner Field and hasn't allowed more than three earned runs at home over his last 19 starts.

NBA Playoff History: Streaking Spurs to be tested by Thunder

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As reviewed in our recent blog, San Antonio is on a remarkable run entering the Western Conference Finals having won 18 straight games while rewarding their betting backers with a 15-2-1 ATS mark.  Now the betting public seems to be riding the Spurs in the Western Conference finals series as well as Game 1 against the Oklahoma City Thunder.  However, I’ve outlined some similar teams on remarkable rolls heading into the Conference Finals that did not pay off for their betting backers.

In 2009-10, the Orlando Magic were on a 28-3 run following a sweep of their first two playoff series. The Magic (-6.5) lost game 1 of the Eastern Conference finals to the Celtics 92-88 and lost the series 4-2.

In 2008-09, the Cleveland Cavaliers were on a 13-1 run including 8-0 in the opening two rounds of the NBA playoffs. Overall, the Cavs were on a 26-3 run heading into the NBA finals before losing the opening game to the Orlando Magic 107-106 as 8.5-point favorites. The Cavaliers went 66-16 during Read more

Thunder-Spurs winner likely to be favored over Heat in NBA Finals

05.25.2012     07:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Miami Heat advanced to the Eastern Conference Finals following last night's commanding 105-93 win over Indiana. They'll await the winner of tonight Boston-Philadelphia Game 7 matchup. According to oddsmakers, should the Heat advance to the NBA Finals, and even if Chris Bosh returns, they'll be priced as series underdogs against whoever wins the Oklahoma City-San Antonio series.

“That Western Conference final is going to pit the two best teams against each other,” Las Vegas Sports Consultants oddsmaker Andrew Patterson said in a telephone interview. “I just don’t think the Heat are playing their best basketball right now and you can’t say that for the Spurs and Thunder.”

“If the Thunder win as an underdog, their power rating is going to be right up there with the Spurs and they will have homecourt advantage over the Heat,” Patterson said. “The Heat have to do something spectacular besides getting Chris Bosh back to move towards being a favorite in the Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: San Diego Padres at New York Mets

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
San Diego (Bass) at NY Mets (Gee) -120 O/U 7
Recommendation: Under

Dillon Gee is an interesting case study. His ERA is currently a full run higher than last season's yet some of the numbers indicate that he is actually pitching better. His strikeout rate is up from 6.39 per 9 innings to 7.79 and his walk rate is down from 3.98 to 2.36. His BABIP of .331 and left on base pct. of 65.4% suggests he's been a bit unlucky. I'm not trying to convince the world this guy is a sleeping giant but when looking at tonight's matchup at home against San Diego, I feel confident Gee is in a position to succeed. San Diego's Anthony Bass doesn't garner a lot of attention but according to some of the numbers I use in my handicap of pitchers, he's currently one of the better starters in baseball. Don't think we'll see a 7.5 on this game, but under 7 at even money is worth a bet.

MLB Betting News: Arizona's Kennedy struggles to find 2011 form

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Gallardo) at Arizona (Kennedy) -115 O/U 9.5

Article on Arizona's Ian Kennedy who is having a tough time duplicating last year's obscene numbers. Not a shock to see him struggle this year as 2011's results simply did not match his stuff.

“A lot of things have to go right," Nagy said. "You have to put up a lot of innings and stay in the game late, but you also have to score some runs. You have to rely on your bullpen a lot. Every time you go out there, things have to kind of work out.

“He’s the same guy. Just trying to find his rhythm right now, get in the swing of things. You go out there, and sometimes you try to do too much. You give up a hit and try to stop things from happening, and things kind of snowball. He has some bad games this year, and he had some Read more

New Jersey grows a pair, says sports betting a go by the fall

05.25.2012     06:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Where the hell did this come from? New Jersey Governor Chris Christie went from kind of liking the idea of sports betting to saying it will be a reality by this fall – and screw the federal ban.

"If someone wants to stop us, then let them try to stop us. We want to work with the casinos and horse racing industry to get it implemented. Am I expecting there may be legal action taken against us to try to prevent it? Yes. But I have every confidence we're going to be successful."

"We intend to go forward," the Republican governor said. "If someone wants to stop us, then let them try to stop us. We want to work with the casinos and horse racing industry to get it implemented.

"Am I expecting there may be legal action taken against us to try to prevent it? Yes," the governor said. "But I have every confidence we're going to be successful."
