Monday MLB Betting Free Play: New York Yankees at Los Angeles Angels

05.28.2012     08:44 AM     ER Sports     Printer Friendly
Submitted by ER Sports

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Yankees (Hughes) +120 at LA Angels (Weaver) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: New York

The Yankees have officially woken out of their slumber with five-straight wins and outscoring the opposition 28-10 in the process. They’ll send right-hander Phil Hughes to the hill Monday night. Hughes has pitched better than his 4.94 ERA would indicate. His velocity is much better than last season as his overall stuff is as well. His 46-13 strikeout-to-walk ratio is certainly proof of better times moving forward this season. It’s clear his profile simply doesn’t fit Yankee Stadium, while the pressure for Hughes is softer on the highway as well. Over the last three-plus years Hughes has allowed 39 home runs in Yankee Stadium, while just 14 on the road. Meanwhile, Jered Weaver continues to deal the goods for the Halos. On the season he boasts a sweet 2.61 ERA. However, he hasn’t been quite that sharp in watching him. In addition, he’s faced more than his share of weaker Read more

Update: The time has come for sports betting to be regulated

05.28.2012     07:37 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Editorial on New Jersey's bold announcement that it would try to implement sports betting as early as this fall.

"Right now over 99 percent of sports betting is unregulated and untaxed. It's a market dominated by criminals," said Joe Asher, CEO of the company that runs 17 Lucky's sports books in Nevada. "There's no way you're going to stop an illegal sports betting market from thriving other than to legalize it."

"It's part of the American culture, it's why we watch sports," Asher said. "Creating a legal market for sports betting so that it is regulated, so that it is taxed, and so that legitimate businesses are involved is, of course, a good thing. The sooner that happens, the better for everyone involved."

Mobile online gambling primed for a big future

05.28.2012     07:29 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Wall Street Journal talks about mobile online gambling in Europe and its role should the United States decided to go the legalization route.

"It looks like a federal solution is less likely, but there are sizeable states like California and New Jersey with serious budgetary constraints that might move towards partial legalization," he says. California, he says, may allow online poker and casino [games such as blackjack, roulette and baccarat] to be legal as early as next year.

"If they commence with poker and casino and see that they work well, that they garner substantial revenue for the state in tax dollars, then maybe down the track sports betting can come in," he says.

MLB Betting Alert: Bettors quick to fade Zito, Arizona now a -130 favorite

05.28.2012     07:16 AM     Printer Friendly
Arizona (Cahill) -130 at San Francisco (Zito) O/U 7.5

We knew San Francisco's Barry Zito wasn't going to be able to sustain his hot start (1.76 ERA after first five starts). Over his last four outings, he's come crashing back down to earth with 14 earned runs allowed and a mediocre 16-to-12 K-to-BB ratio. According to FanGraph's xFIP rating, Zito has the third worst mark in baseball behind Ubaldo Jimenez and Daniel Bard. His BABIP of .239 also suggests he's been very fortunate. Needless to say, we aren't the only ones to spot Zito's shortcomings. After opening as a small favorite, Arizona and Trevor Cahill are now -130 road favorites. Line history courtesy of Pinnacle.

2012 World Series of Poker gets underway

05.28.2012     07:01 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Las Vegas Sun breaks down the 2012 World Series of Poker which kicked off Sunday at the Rio Casino. In all, there will be 61 bracelet events. A few changes on tap for this year's event included: Tournament expansion with nearly 500 tables. There will also be an ante-only no-limit hold’em tournament ($1,500 buy-in and no blinds). Also changing are the tournament directors actually encouraging players to talk more.

“We tightened poker up so much at the table that players were afraid to use verbal strategy to out-maneuver their opponents,” said Tournament Director Jack Effel, “which has always been an integral part of poker in every single poker game dating back to the Wild West. I think it takes poker back to its fundamental place and intent when it comes to strategy.”
