Adding to our previous blog post that touched on Miami’s success against left-handed pitching: The Marlins bats have been held down in two consecutive games but we’ll call for them to come alive here tonight against Mike Minor. The Braves left hander has been dreadful this season and has allowed at least four runs in six consecutive trips to the mound. He features a 7.27 ERA away from home and despite the spacious dimensions of this new park in Miami this is playing like a hitters field. As we saw a couple of weeks ago the Marlins match up well against Minor; they had nine base runners on in less than five innings against him, scoring six runs before he was yanked.

Marty Otto pointed out that the Miami Marlins have now won nine straight games against left-handed starters. They'll try to make it 10 tonight against Atlanta southpaw Mike Minor. Also note Miami has scored at least five runs in seven of their eight home games against lefties.

When a game goes over the total at Petco Park is usually isn't by much and rarely do we see two teams combine for double-digit runs. But the last two contests – against the weak hitting San Francisco Giants – have each produced 11 runs. MLB Handicapping: St. Louis Cardinals staff continues to decline

Pitching starting to become a major concern for the St. Louis Cardinals. The team's ERA has jumped from 2.57 in April to 4.38 in May and six days into June, it sits at 7.88. Their strikeout rate has dropped while their walks and home runs are up. A lot of it has to do with certain arms coming back down to earth. Kyle Lohse and Jake Westbrook were performing way beyond expectations. Lance Lynn has enough talent to sustain success but at some point, innings may become a factor. Jaime Garcia's arm is clearly not right. Adam Wainwright is moving in the right direction but who knows if he'll be able to handle a 200+ inning season. Chris Carpenter is sitting on the DL with shoulder problems; a 37-year old who threw 472 innings over the last two years. It will be interesting to see how this
shaky staff
handles 15 games worth of Interleague play starting Friday.

MLB Betting Alert: Padres solidify worst staff in baseball by signing Marquis

If you happen to be a washed up starting pitcher in search of a job, have your agent give San Diego Padres GM Josh Byrnes a call. There is a 94% chance they'll find you work. Not able to cut it in Minnesota, Jason Marquis and his 8.47 ERA are not only headed to Petco, but starting tomorrow against San Francisco. He replaces Edinson Volquez who has been all over the place of late (15 walks last four starts). We understand the Padres are in a tough spot with Tim Stauffer, Corey Luebke, and Dustin Moseley on the DL. But Marquis? This after they rented Jeff Suppan for six starts (5.28 ERA). There are even rumblings of the Padres calling up Kip Wells! Don't forget, the Padres have been starting retread Eric Stults and just picked up Russ Ohlendorf from Triple-A Pawtucket (Boston). Add in Anthony Bass looking worn out already (15 ERs last three starts) and this is without question the worst starting staff in baseball.

. Over his last two starts, Norris allowed 12 earned runs and 15 hits in 6.1 innings. Note that Norris has a proven track record against the Cards (7-2, 2.17 ERA, 1.15 WHIP). The price however may be too rich on Adam Wainwright who despite pitching better of late is a tough sell as a road favorite.

It’s not hard to make a strong case for betting against Jeanmar Gomez these days. The Indians fifth starter has pitched like a fifth starter, lit up for 16 hits and 11 earned runs over 10.2 innings of work on his last two trips to the hill. His track record against the Tigers lineup is nothing short of awful. He faced them last September: 4.2 innings, ten hits and eight earned runs allowed. He faced them last April, again giving up ten hits (only three runs) in a short 5.2 inning outing. In his previous start against the Tigers in 2010, it was more of the same: eight runs and ten hits allowed in just three innings of work. With a 15.26 ERA, a 3.26 WHIP and a .465 batting average against in his career at Comerica Park, this is not a hurler primed for a strong effort tonight.

Exactly three years ago in June, 2009, I wrote an article titled
From Fat to Fit with Fairway
and posted it in this blog. I reviewed my dedication and discipline to a 30-day diet, nutrition and fitness program that turned into 90 days of commitment that resulted in a weight reduction of 35 lbs., inches off my waist and overall better physical health. I’ve never been over 200 lbs., but after regaining nearly half the weight last year, I did another body cleanse and monitored my diet.
So six weeks ago I challenged myself again and I’ve managed to lose another 15 lbs. while focusing on a highly concentrated diet filled with fruits, vegetables, vitamins and regular exercise. You can read my previous blog from 2009 to get an idea of the diet and dedication I follow. Through the entire month of May and into June, I have worked out in my pool almost daily with swimming, running and resistance exercises in the pool. It’s paid off and I look and feel better physically and I’m trying for better balance mentally and emotionally.

Philadelphia's struggles continue with a
fourth straight loss
last night. Cliff Lee (-6.5 units) dropped to 0-3 despite a 2.92 ERA and 1.01 WHIP. The offense has scored only 16 runs in his nine winless starts. The Phillies are now 28-29 (12-17 at home) and in last place in the National League East. And the return of Chase Utley and Ryan Howard looks to be a few weeks away.
Chase Utley and Ryan Howard are scheduled to take a few more baby steps on their excruciatingly long journey down rehab road. Utley will be the designated hitter in an extended-spring-training game for the second time in three days, and Howard is scheduled to hit, but not run the bases, in the same game.
"We couldn't generate nothing," a frustrated Manuel said. "That's the inconsistency of our team. Tonight, we didn't have a whole lot of chances to score. Their guy kind of shut us down."

MLB Handicapping: Minnesota's trio of young pitchers are producing profits

I spoke on yesterday's Sportsmemo Podcast about some of Minnesota's young starting pitchers. Of the current three – Scott Diamond, PJ Walters and Cole De Vries – none are considered “highly touted” nor are they all that “young” being 25, 27 and 27 respectively. But while Diamond and Walters had thrown a few innings at the MLB level prior to this year, it appears that the trio has had somewhat of an advantage this season in facing various teams for the first time. Despite being 13 games under .500 for the year, the Twins are 10-4 +9.2 units when the trio starts. That is obviously better than the 10-21 record the team has when Carl Pavano, Francisco Liriano and Nick Blackburn toss. The problem though is how is the trio going to handle facing teams for a second and third time? Like a lot of Minnesota pitchers, Diamond, Walters and De Vries don't miss a lot of bats and have displayed average velocity. Combined, they've posted 53 strikeouts in 85 innings. That worries me when innings and fatigue start to become factors later in the season – assuming that they make it that far.

At one point a 10-1 series favorite, the Miami Heat now find themselves underdogs following last night's loss to Boston. Up 3-2, the Celtics are a -140 series favorite at 5Dimes and Heritage. The Heat are a 2-point road favorite for Thursday's Game 6. Four straight games in the series have gone over the total.
