Offshore sportsbook operator ordered to pay $7.7 million

06.13.2012     02:15 PM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

The brother-in-law of a US Congressman was ordered to pay $7.7 million for his role in an illegal offshore sportsbook that conducted business in several states. In case you were wondering, the sportsbook's name was Sports Offshore ("was" meaning it went to domain heaven). Amazing it didn’t stick around longer with such a catchy name.

MLB Betting Alert: Matusz scratched, recently demoted Arrieta gets nod

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Correia) at Baltimore (Arrieta) -135 O/U 9

Baltimore's Brian Matusz has been scratched for tonight's start against Pittsburgh. He was hit in the nose while attempting to bunt during batting practice. Enter stage left Jake Arrieta who after allowing nine earned runs last time out was demoted to the bullpen. Being on regular rest however, he was a logical choice to replace Matusz. Perhaps the second chance and facing the Pirates will bring about some better results.

It looks as if we should go ahead and put Georgia on our list of teams to fade

06.13.2012     12:02 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Is there a team in recent memory with a worse track record of living up to lofty preseason expectations than Georgia? There probably are must it seems like the Bulldogs are at their best both straight up and against the spread when projections are modest. Heading into 2008, they were presason No. 1 according to the AP but finished 10-3 SU and 4-8 ATS. Last year, UGA began the season 19th AND lost their first two games. The end result was 10-4 SU, 8-6 ATS and a berth in the SEC Championship. Similar situation in 2007 with only nine returning starters yet they finished 11-2 SU, 8-4 ATS and No. 2 in the polls. So here we are heading into 2012 and there are rumblings about Georgia running the table – some of it scheduled-based with no LSU or Alabama on the regular season slate. They are the top pick to the win the SEC East according to most sportsbooks and 5Dimes lists their season over/wins at 9.5ov-150.

“Preseason predictions are fun to talk about, but bottom line is we’ve got to get the job done Read more

MLB Gambling Notes: Boston Red Sox remain under .500 as offense slumps

06.13.2012     10:58 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not swinging the sticks and as a result not winning many games of late as the Boston Red Sox reside in last place in the American League East; 6.5 games out of first. After opening June with back-to-back seven run performances, the Red Sox are hitting .217 and averaging three runs per game during their 2-7 stretch. They've still scored the third most runs in baseball on the season and Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford are expected to start their rehab assignments shortly.

“This is the big leagues and you’re going to face tough pitching every night, so that’s not an excuse in my mind,’’ said Sox first baseman/right fielder Adrian Gonzalez. “We were fortunate tonight because our pitching was so good, but we need to be able to score more runs for our guys. I know this team is capable of it and we’re just going through a drought right now, but Read more

MLB Handicapping: Today's card loaded with umpires that trend OVER the total

06.13.2012     08:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
From a handicapping perspective, a majority of MLB umpires are considered "neutral" meaning that their over/under numbers long term reside close to .500. That being said, there are a handful of umps on tonight's card that have some strong marks to the OVER this season. Totals in MLB are just under 51% to the OVER in 2012.

MLB Betting Free Play: Cleveland Indians at Cincinnati Reds

Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Lowe) at Cincinnati (Latos) -140 O/U 9
Recommendation: Over

It is very hard to trust Cincinnati's Mat Latos at home against an American League lineup. Latos' transition from the weak-hitting, pitcher-friendly National League West has not been a smooth one. His fly ball ways (126-86 ratio) and tendency to challenge hitters up in the zone have resulted in a 4.85 ERA including 11 home runs allowed in 43.2 innings at Great American Ball Park. He's also had a tough time with lefties – something Cleveland has a lot of – with a .962 OPS. Derek Lowe has returned to earth with two of his last three starts being of disastrous variety. His groundball ways are a good thing to have in this ball park but with only 24 strikeouts in 72.2 innings, a lot of balls will be put in play tonight and any mistakes will be magnified due to the short porch in right field. Note that in four career starts at the GAP, Lowe's ERA is 5.09. Total certainly reflective of the mediocrity on Read more

Now the government is looking into Pacquiao-Bradley outcome

06.13.2012     07:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Nothing gives us a warmer feeling than when the United States Government sticks its nose in sports related issues. Nevada's Harry Reid is apparently upset that a lot of folks are upset about the controversial outcome of the Pacquiao-Bradley fight. Reid wants the attorney general to investigate if there was any wrong doing by the judges. A completely reasonable request because there is absolutely no chance the DA won't quickly and efficiently crack the case and discover something people actually involved in the industry couldn't put their finger on.

“Our attorney general is a wonderful woman. She’ll do her best. I feel confident there’s been nothing untoward, but if an investigation makes everyone feel better, do the investigation,” Reid told reporters.

In last night's Game 1, the Thunder outscored the Heat by 10 points in the fourth quarter to pull away with the spread covering 105-94 victory. OKC is now -300 on the adjusted series price.

MLB Gambling Alert: Kansas City's Sanchez makes first start off of DL

06.13.2012     07:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Milwaukee (Wolf) at Kansas City (Sanchez)

Kansas City's Jonathan Sanchez will make his first start after a brief stint on the DL due to bicep tendinitis. The move pushes the rest of the rotation back a day. Sanchez had been a mess for much of his first six starts with 22 walks in 25.1 innings. Perhaps tonight’s fresh start and a National League opponent will prompt better results.
