Las Vegas casino opens its trailer doors for business

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This isn't the first time or the last that a Las Vegas casino had to get creative in order to keep its gambling license. The makeshift Moulin Rouge opened its 40-foot trailer doors for a full business day on Tuesday. The Nevada Gaming Control Board board requires that a property must offer gambling at least once every two years. The original Moulin Rouge is still on the market for $19 million if you are interested.

Vegas bettors show interest in Euro 2012

06.20.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to various Las Vegas oddsmakers, Euro 2012 has been a popular choice for local bettors. The tournament is down to eight teams with Spain and Germany the co-betting favorites at 2-to-1.

“It’s a good time of year for it because there’s not much going on during the day,” said Jeff Sherman, assistant race and sports director who oversees soccer at the LVH Superbook. “It’s the second largest tournament we’ll book. It’s behind the World Cup, and it’s not close to the World Cup when it comes to handle.”

“Germany’s playing a little bit better than Spain and getting supported more at the betting window, too,” Sherman said. “Germany has been by far the most popular bet team on an individual game basis.”

From behind the counter: How oddsmakers use power ratings

06.20.2012     12:04 PM     Printer Friendly
Oddsmaker Todd Fuhrman posted a blog on how power ratings are used in the bookmaking industry.

For example, if power numbers indicate a line should be 3 points different than the market, you can’t ignore everyone else and hang a 6 when the world’s at a 3. Instead, the objective is to shade the price just enough (say 3, -125 in football) realizing that any sharp bettor who shares the same power numbers or thought process on a game as you will be discouraged from betting the “correct side” at your shop.

Companies position themselves by creating free online poker websites

06.20.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The owners behind Station Casinos are launching a free online gambling website later this week. Ultimate Poker will be available on Facebook as a free social game – eventually offering cash games once they become legal.

“We are trying to provide an authentic experience for people who care about the game,” Derossi said. “As we move from the social side of gaming to a real money space, we will have serious players.”

“We’re also going to utilize Station Casinos’ customer relationship model, which is very important in any online enterprise,” Prior said. “You need people to return to your product.”

“We view this as a global opportunity,” Breitling said. “When looking at online gaming, it’s going to be a domino effect with Nevada leading the way.”

It has now become officially impossible to bet on the Colorado Rockies

06.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has a great chance of not working out.

In what amounts to an overhaul of his pitching staff, Tracy first said Colorado would send the struggling Jeremy Guthrie to the bullpen (OK, so far pretty normal), and that instead of replacing him in the rotation, the Rockies would go with a four-man rotation, with each starter limited to 75 pitches per start -- what!?!

“We have two rookies in the rotation, so you have to be very careful,” Tracy said. “You can’t just throw them loose on three days’ rest.”

“We had to do something that was unconventional,” Tracy said.

New Jersey pretty confident they'll get this sports betting thing passed

06.20.2012     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Update on New Jersey's push for legalized sports betting. Note the last quote from state Sen. Jennifer Beck. We don't know if it was transcribed incorrectly or taken out of context but we're not sure what she is getting at by saying the NFL "gives the point spread of the games."

“I think the attorneys in the [state] Attorney General’s Office have studied this issue and they feel the federal law is probably unconstitutional,” she said. “You can’t prohibit or limit certain industry to certain states. I think there is a sense that the federal law won’t survive and that is why the governor has been so strongly advocating for (sports betting).”

“This is in some ways after the fact because the bill was signed into law, the referendum was passed by New Jersey voters and now the governor spent a little bit of time focusing on the issue,” she said. “New Jersey is going to move forward and wait for the federal government in essence to come and tell us we Read more

MLB Betting News: White Sox decide to cart Floyd out for another start

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wells) at Chicago WS (Floyd) -175 O/U 10

The Chicago White Sox are apparently going to give Gavin Floyd another chance. Floyd has a 10.38 ERA over his last six starts and hasn't had a quality outing since May 11. According to well-respected pitching coach Don Cooper, Floyd's problems stem from a lack of command.

"It's not about stuff. Everyone in the league has stuff," Cooper said by phone from Los Angeles where the White Sox play the Dodgers Friday night on Comcast SportsNet. "You've got to command it more. You've got to pitch, and he's not commanding at the level he needs to command to put himself in a better position to win the game. That's what it comes down to."

"He's got enough fastball. He's got enough curve ball. He's got a major league slider, a major league changeup," Read more

We’ve never really tracked starting pitching injuries league-wide but it seems like there are an awful lot of guys currently on the shelf. This is just a rough estimate, but close to 33% of the league’s starting pitchers are hurt – everything from a skipped start to out for the season.

MLB Handicapping: Rays send Hellickson to DL, call up Archer for debut

06.20.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The amount of starting pitchers to hit the DL of late continues to climb as the Tampa Bay Rays placed Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day due to shoulder fatigue. Tampa’s Chris Archer was called up from Triple-A and will make his MLB debut tonight at Washington against Stephen Strasburg. Archer was a sixth round pick in 2006 and had a 4.81 ERA (3.41 FIP) with 90 strikeouts and 45 walks in 76.7 innings at Durham this season.

MLB Handicapping: Fading pitchers after a no-hitter or perfect game

06.19.2012     11:37 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We've tried to find some type of betting trend to use with pitchers off of no-hitters or perfect games. Unfortunately, there simply isn't much there. FanGraphs broke down the numbers and while overall, there tends to be a decline in performance the next time out, the results are pretty random. A few pitchers (see: Carlos Zambrano, Philip Humber, Johan Santana) got smacked around, others were solid (see: Mark Buehrle, Roy Halladay), and a few didn't miss a beat (see: Justin Verlander, Ervin Santana). The betting markers tried to fade Matt Cain last night and were correct in projecting a letdown (5 IP, 3 ER, 4 BBs, 4 Ks) but the Giants still won. For Johan Santana, it may have been the combination of a complete game shutout and then a no-hitter. He's been hit around each of his last two starts though it came on the road against the Yankees and Rays. Humber has had a rough go of it since tossing his perfect game. Weaver has seen his ERA climb a full run since his no-no, though it was in large part because of one bad outing (3.1 IP, 8 ERs at Texas). His other three starts were fine. In Read more

MLB Betting News: LA's Jered Weaver slated to start on Wednesday

06.19.2012     11:17 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Los Angeles' Jered Weaver (back) is expected to make his first start off the DL tomorrow against San Francisco. Weaver had a few bullpen sessions but the team refrained from giving him a rehab start. The Angels are likely to send Garrett Richards back to Triple-A. Richards was 2-0 with a 0.86 ERA.

"Jered is going to start Wednesday and Haren will start Friday" against the Dodgers, Scioscia said. "Then, we'll see where we're going from there."

The Angels could have sent Weaver out for a one-game rehabilitation stint, "but we didn't want him to waste bullets in the minor leagues," Scioscia said. "There's no reason he shouldn't get through five or six innings."

NBA Finals and Playoff Betting Profiles: Oklahoma City vs. Miami Heat

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We’re having a winning and profitable postseason and chipped in a Big Drive UNDER the total winner in Game 3 of the NBA finals. I’m well connected in the sports handicapping and betting business, and many Fairway followers and fans also send me stats, information and insight. Some scoring information was shared with me regarding the Heat along with their strong results vs. winning teams and I thought I would pass it along to you.

Recall in May I posted a NBA blog about Round 2 home favorites being the biggest profit producers in any round of NBA playoff action. Additionally, I noted some other ATS profiles regarding teams off three or more consecutive ATS playoff wins and how to use that in your handicapping (Game 2 winner on Heat). We Tweeted a recommendation on the Oklahoma City Thunder as an underdog over the Spurs in the Western Conference Finals and also recommended a play on the Miami Heat as an underdog in the NBA Finals.  The public’s overreaction to oddsmakers’ already adjusted prices Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Chicago Cubs at Chicago White Sox

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wood) at Chicago WS (Peavy) -200 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Over

With yesterday's wind pattern (right-to-left and gusty) we saw seven home runs and 15 runs at Chicago's Cellular Field. With a similar forecast projected for tonight, I think we can expect more than a few balls to leave the yard. Jake Peavy has allowed a modest eight home runs in nearly 90 innings – a very fortunate stat considering his fly ball rate is around 67%. For a pitcher to be that heavy towards the fly ball, his HR/FB rate should be well north of 10% instead of 6.8%. His rate is slightly higher at home (9.4%) but I still feel that he's going to have issues pitching in this park with temperatures on the rise and his innings starting to mount. Chicago's Travis Wood hasn't been very impressive this year (4.58 ERA) despite a handful of favorable matchups (at Minnesota, at San Francisco, vs. San Diego, at Houston). This may be his most difficult start of the season as the White Sox like to hit the Read more

MLB Gambling News: Lincecum's struggles have little to do with being unlucky

06.19.2012     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It would be interesting to see the amount of man hours the blogosphere has dedicated to dissecting San Francisco's Tim Lincecum this year. The Giants are 38-30 overall but only 2-12 in Lincecum's starts. According to FanGraphs, his struggles have little to do with being unlucky but rather lack of command, falling behind in counts, and simply throwing too many hittable pitches.

But that doesn’t mean he hasn’t earned his poor results to date. The word luck absolves him of blame for the outcome, which shouldn’t be what we’re trying to do. Blame Tim Lincecum for throwing terrible pitches – just realize that it doesn’t mean that he’s going to keep throwing terrible pitches in the future.

MLB Betting Notes: Coors Field producing runs at an old school rate

06.19.2012     07:30 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No hitters, perfect games, RA Dickey, totals of 5.5...there sure is a lot of great pitching going on these days. One of the outliers though has been Coors Field. How about 12.75 runs per game this year, with totals now at 22-12-2 O/U.

"I wish I had an explanation," Rockies general manager Dan O'Dowd said. "It is significantly different, and we didn't anticipate that in our planning, as it has been somewhat consistent over the last five years."

"We don't control the humidor settings," O'Dowd said. "That is handed down by the [MLB] New York office, so we can't randomly change those."

MLB Handicapping: Marine layer helps bettors cash UNDER tickets

06.19.2012     07:19 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Most bettors have heard the term "marine layer" when describing ball parks on the west coast. Here is an article from MLB.com that discusses the impact it has on the game. Unders have cashed at a 57% rate at the six ball parks this season (see results below).

"You can tell by the stadiums that are closer to the beach, with the marine layer, how the ball doesn't carry as well," said Weaver, whose first career no-hitter came on May 2 in front of family and friends in Anaheim against the Twins. "The cold weather at night knocks balls down.

"You can see how hitters react -- that look that they can't believe it -- when they think they get one and it doesn't go out. In the day, the ball travels a lot better. We're fortunate we have a great outfield, and those guys can run balls down in the gaps."
