Irish bookmaker gives opinion on gambling in the United States

06.21.2012     01:26 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Vice.com conducted an interview with an Irish bookie about the differences between European and US betting markets. His theories are fairly accurate, though he talks as if US bettors are still in the dark ages (see: his claim that we don't have access to as many NFL prop bets) and have no option other than to use a local named Stan. Playing online obviously isn't as convenient as it was 10 years ago, but nowadays, the old school local bookmaker has gone the way of off-screen shops and in some cases they offer more in terms of props than the big boys like Pinnacle, CRIS and 5Dimes. Not to mention any European sportsbook offering NFL prop bets is more than likely just copying them from a US source.

How does the betting experience in the US compare to that in Europe?
The online betting companies here in Europe are light years ahead of the US in terms of the product sophistication. For example, for an average NFL matchup, a US bookie might offer you only a few “markets,” or areas to bet on, such as who will win, total points, etc., but here, you'll have over Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Upcoming opponents get second and third looks vs. Texas' Darvish

06.21.2012     12:37 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas' Yu Darvish was on the mark his last two starts after the Rangers juggled the rotation to get him some extended rest. The competition was weak (Houston and San Diego) but Darvish showed much better command (5 walks, 19 strikeouts and 67% strikes). FanGraphs pointed out last week that though a small sample, teams seemed much more in tune with Darivsh's offerings a second time around. There is a possibility as many as five of his next opponents will have already seen him (Detroit, Oakland, Minnesota, Seattle and LA Angels). In second looks against Seattle, Toronto, Los Angeles and Oakland, Darvish's combined numbers were: 20.1 IP, 24 hits, 18 walks, 19 strikeouts, and a 6.53 ERA.

MLB Handicapping: Without Kemp, Dodgers haven't hit a lick

06.21.2012     11:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When Matt Kemp missed time in mid-May, Los Angeles was still able to produce a good amount of offense. But after returning for just two games and then placed back on the DL, the Kemp-less Dodgers have struggled mightily with the sticks. Over their last 19 games (10-9), they've averaged 3.73 runs per game and hit .233/.314/.311/.625. Even more alarming is that LA has hit only five home runs during that span – none since June 12.

California schools want off the betting menu should it become legalized

06.21.2012     08:15 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
California is pushing hard to legalize sports betting and so far it is moving in the right direction. But here's an interesting side note involving the details of the bill they drafted...

At the request of Stanford and the University of Southern California, Wright has exempted gambling on games involving sports teams from California universities, whether they are playing at home or in another state.

Let he who is without sin cast the first stone while robbing a bookie

06.21.2012     08:03 AM     Printer Friendly
Ever hear the one about the drunk guy who tries to rob a local sportsbook with a stone? No? Well here you go...

“One can scarcely think of a robbery of a shop that was more likely to come undone than Mr Darby’s behaviour in his local Ladbrokes – a place that he regularly goes in to and a place that when he approached the counter the staff thought he was joking to begin with because they know him so well.”

Czech bettors think Czech team has no shot against Portugal

06.21.2012     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ahh, the old bet against your favorite team trick. Not wanting to risk both emotional and financial defeat, Czech bettors are heavily supporting today's quarterfinal opponent Portugal. Portugal is a -150 favorite with the Czech Republic around +450. The draw is +250.

"About 90 percent of bets that we've accepted predict a Portugal win," Petr Srain, a spokesman for betting firm Fortuna, was quoted as saying in the Lidove Noviny newspaper.

"Either they win their bet or they'll celebrate the Czech Republic's qualification for the semi-final," he added.

NBA Finals: Betting public favors OVER the total for tonight's Game 5

06.21.2012     07:39 AM     Printer Friendly
Oklahoma City at Miami -3 O/U 193.5

According to Sports Options, the "public" is in love with the OVER for tonight's Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Note that CRIS opened the game 193.5 and it hasn't budged. Pinnacle opened 193 and is now 193.5. A few Las Vegas sportsbooks including LVH and Wynn currently show 194.

MLB Gambling Update: Colorado's Tracy true to his word, pulls White after 75 pitches

06.21.2012     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

At least we know Colorado manager Jim Tracy isn't a liar. After saying he would go with a four-man rotation and cap pitch counts at 75, he pulled last night's starter Alex White at exactly 75 pitches. It was a rather easy decision with White getting pounded around (3.2 IP, 5 ERs). Jeremy Guthrie threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Todd Helton's ninth inning error gave Philadelphia the win and dropped the Rockies to 25-42 and 10-21 on the highway.

MLB Betting News: Carlos Zambrano out of whack according to Guillen

06.21.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Zambrano) at Boston (Matusaka) -135 O/U 10.5

For as long as we can remember, there has been Good Carlos Zambrano and Bad Carlos Zambrano. Good Carlos had a 1.86 ERA in mid-June. Bad Carlos got smacked around for 11 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Based on Miami manager Ozzie Guillen's recent quote, bettors would be wise to expect some more Bad Carlos tonight in Boston.

"Carlos right now is a little out of whack," Guillen said. "He's flying out. His mechanics are very bad. His sinker is moving away too long. You cannot get behind people (in the count) all the time. With you and pitching, it's not about how hard you throw. It's about location and what you want to do on the pitching mound."

So hitting seven straight numbers on a roulette table turned out to be a hoax

06.21.2012     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Hi, Steve? Yeah, Kathy again. It turns out we won't need your services. No, I'm sure. Apparently Bob was messing with one of the roulette tables again. I know, he's such a goof.

"There was no one playing at that table," Rio Las Vegas Hotel & Casino spokesman Gary Thompson told The Detroit News on Wednesday. "It was just a diagnostic test being done."
