Czech bettors think Czech team has no shot against Portugal

06.21.2012     07:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ahh, the old bet against your favorite team trick. Not wanting to risk both emotional and financial defeat, Czech bettors are heavily supporting today's quarterfinal opponent Portugal. Portugal is a -150 favorite with the Czech Republic around +450. The draw is +250.

"About 90 percent of bets that we've accepted predict a Portugal win," Petr Srain, a spokesman for betting firm Fortuna, was quoted as saying in the Lidove Noviny newspaper.

"Either they win their bet or they'll celebrate the Czech Republic's qualification for the semi-final," he added.

Oklahoma City at Miami -3 O/U 193.5

According to Sports Options, the "public" is in love with the OVER for tonight's Game 5 of the NBA Finals. Note that CRIS opened the game 193.5 and it hasn't budged. Pinnacle opened 193 and is now 193.5. A few Las Vegas sportsbooks including LVH and Wynn currently show 194.

MLB Gambling Update: Colorado's Tracy true to his word, pulls White after 75 pitches

06.21.2012     07:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

At least we know Colorado manager Jim Tracy isn't a liar. After saying he would go with a four-man rotation and cap pitch counts at 75, he pulled last night's starter Alex White at exactly 75 pitches. It was a rather easy decision with White getting pounded around (3.2 IP, 5 ERs). Jeremy Guthrie threw three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. Todd Helton's ninth inning error gave Philadelphia the win and dropped the Rockies to 25-42 and 10-21 on the highway.

MLB Betting News: Carlos Zambrano out of whack according to Guillen

06.21.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Miami (Zambrano) at Boston (Matusaka) -135 O/U 10.5

For as long as we can remember, there has been Good Carlos Zambrano and Bad Carlos Zambrano. Good Carlos had a 1.86 ERA in mid-June. Bad Carlos got smacked around for 11 earned runs in back-to-back starts. Based on Miami manager Ozzie Guillen's recent quote, bettors would be wise to expect some more Bad Carlos tonight in Boston.

"Carlos right now is a little out of whack," Guillen said. "He's flying out. His mechanics are very bad. His sinker is moving away too long. You cannot get behind people (in the count) all the time. With you and pitching, it's not about how hard you throw. It's about location and what you want to do on the pitching mound."

So hitting seven straight numbers on a roulette table turned out to be a hoax

06.21.2012     07:14 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Hi, Steve? Yeah, Kathy again. It turns out we won't need your services. No, I'm sure. Apparently Bob was messing with one of the roulette tables again. I know, he's such a goof.

"There was no one playing at that table," Rio Las Vegas Hotel & Casino spokesman Gary Thompson told The Detroit News on Wednesday. "It was just a diagnostic test being done."

Las Vegas casino opens its trailer doors for business

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This isn't the first time or the last that a Las Vegas casino had to get creative in order to keep its gambling license. The makeshift Moulin Rouge opened its 40-foot trailer doors for a full business day on Tuesday. The Nevada Gaming Control Board board requires that a property must offer gambling at least once every two years. The original Moulin Rouge is still on the market for $19 million if you are interested.

Vegas bettors show interest in Euro 2012

06.20.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
According to various Las Vegas oddsmakers, Euro 2012 has been a popular choice for local bettors. The tournament is down to eight teams with Spain and Germany the co-betting favorites at 2-to-1.

“It’s a good time of year for it because there’s not much going on during the day,” said Jeff Sherman, assistant race and sports director who oversees soccer at the LVH Superbook. “It’s the second largest tournament we’ll book. It’s behind the World Cup, and it’s not close to the World Cup when it comes to handle.”

“Germany’s playing a little bit better than Spain and getting supported more at the betting window, too,” Sherman said. “Germany has been by far the most popular bet team on an individual game basis.”

From behind the counter: How oddsmakers use power ratings

06.20.2012     12:04 PM     Printer Friendly
Oddsmaker Todd Fuhrman posted a blog on how power ratings are used in the bookmaking industry.

For example, if power numbers indicate a line should be 3 points different than the market, you can’t ignore everyone else and hang a 6 when the world’s at a 3. Instead, the objective is to shade the price just enough (say 3, -125 in football) realizing that any sharp bettor who shares the same power numbers or thought process on a game as you will be discouraged from betting the “correct side” at your shop.

Companies position themselves by creating free online poker websites

06.20.2012     11:23 AM     Printer Friendly
The owners behind Station Casinos are launching a free online gambling website later this week. Ultimate Poker will be available on Facebook as a free social game – eventually offering cash games once they become legal.

“We are trying to provide an authentic experience for people who care about the game,” Derossi said. “As we move from the social side of gaming to a real money space, we will have serious players.”

“We’re also going to utilize Station Casinos’ customer relationship model, which is very important in any online enterprise,” Prior said. “You need people to return to your product.”

“We view this as a global opportunity,” Breitling said. “When looking at online gaming, it’s going to be a domino effect with Nevada leading the way.”

It has now become officially impossible to bet on the Colorado Rockies

06.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This has a great chance of not working out.

In what amounts to an overhaul of his pitching staff, Tracy first said Colorado would send the struggling Jeremy Guthrie to the bullpen (OK, so far pretty normal), and that instead of replacing him in the rotation, the Rockies would go with a four-man rotation, with each starter limited to 75 pitches per start -- what!?!

“We have two rookies in the rotation, so you have to be very careful,” Tracy said. “You can’t just throw them loose on three days’ rest.”

“We had to do something that was unconventional,” Tracy said.

New Jersey pretty confident they'll get this sports betting thing passed

06.20.2012     07:59 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Update on New Jersey's push for legalized sports betting. Note the last quote from state Sen. Jennifer Beck. We don't know if it was transcribed incorrectly or taken out of context but we're not sure what she is getting at by saying the NFL "gives the point spread of the games."

“I think the attorneys in the [state] Attorney General’s Office have studied this issue and they feel the federal law is probably unconstitutional,” she said. “You can’t prohibit or limit certain industry to certain states. I think there is a sense that the federal law won’t survive and that is why the governor has been so strongly advocating for (sports betting).”

“This is in some ways after the fact because the bill was signed into law, the referendum was passed by New Jersey voters and now the governor spent a little bit of time focusing on the issue,” she said. “New Jersey is going to move forward and wait for the federal government in essence to come and tell us we Read more

MLB Betting News: White Sox decide to cart Floyd out for another start

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Chicago Cubs (Wells) at Chicago WS (Floyd) -175 O/U 10

The Chicago White Sox are apparently going to give Gavin Floyd another chance. Floyd has a 10.38 ERA over his last six starts and hasn't had a quality outing since May 11. According to well-respected pitching coach Don Cooper, Floyd's problems stem from a lack of command.

"It's not about stuff. Everyone in the league has stuff," Cooper said by phone from Los Angeles where the White Sox play the Dodgers Friday night on Comcast SportsNet. "You've got to command it more. You've got to pitch, and he's not commanding at the level he needs to command to put himself in a better position to win the game. That's what it comes down to."

"He's got enough fastball. He's got enough curve ball. He's got a major league slider, a major league changeup," Read more

We’ve never really tracked starting pitching injuries league-wide but it seems like there are an awful lot of guys currently on the shelf. This is just a rough estimate, but close to 33% of the league’s starting pitchers are hurt – everything from a skipped start to out for the season.

MLB Handicapping: Rays send Hellickson to DL, call up Archer for debut

06.20.2012     06:50 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The amount of starting pitchers to hit the DL of late continues to climb as the Tampa Bay Rays placed Jeremy Hellickson on the 15-day due to shoulder fatigue. Tampa’s Chris Archer was called up from Triple-A and will make his MLB debut tonight at Washington against Stephen Strasburg. Archer was a sixth round pick in 2006 and had a 4.81 ERA (3.41 FIP) with 90 strikeouts and 45 walks in 76.7 innings at Durham this season.
