MLB Handicapping: Oddsmakers adjust to hot temps and poor pitching at Coors

06.26.2012     08:35 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article trying to explain the increase in run production at Coors Field. One theory is the remarkably hot and dry weather occurring in Denver. Don't tell that to Jeff Francis who pitched well last night despite it being the hottest game in Coors Field history. But despite Francis' effort, let’s not let facts get in the way – Colorado's pitching just isn't very good (5.80 ERA at home). Totals at Coors are now 22-13-2 O/U on the season. Oddsmakers have adjusted and we are now routinely seeing games lined 10 or more. Double-digits totals though are a much more modest 9-8 O/U.

MLB Betting Notes: Blue Jays' Laffey makes first start in nearly two years

06.26.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Toronto (Laffey) at Boston (Matuszaka) -155 O/U 11

Another day, another stop gap starter as the Blue Jays send Aaron Laffey to the hill tonight in Boston. Laffey was called up from Triple-A two weeks ago and made four appearances out of the bullpen including a three-inning stint last Wednesday. In 11 starts at Triple-A Las Vegas, Laffey was 3-5 with a 4.81 ERA. This will mark his first start in nearly two years. Despite its pitching woes, Toronto has made up for it with the sticks. Winners of seven of its last 10, the Jays are hitting .293, slugging .503 and averaging 6.2 runs per game during that stretch. Of note, be prepared for a potential Jamie Moyer sighting.

Technology could be the answer to accurately judging a boxing match

06.26.2012     07:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Boxing may have found a more accurate way of judging fights thanks to a little computer chip. PunchForce is a device place on boxers' gloves that measures the speed and force of a punch. The original thought behind it was to broadcast the data for television viewers. But in the wake of the infamous Pacquiao-Bradley fight, some are saying it should be used by judges. PunchForce is owned by HBO and is slated to launch in January of 2013.

"You just have to look at the blogs (to see that) there is a lot of argument about judging bias and refereeing bias," said Edis, now a new-media professor at New York University. But "numbers don't lie, and people having access to that data in real time, that can shine a light on the sport."

MLB Gambling Notes: Trying to figure out New York's Phil Hughes

06.26.2012     07:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cleveland (Masterson) at NY Yankees (Hughes) -155 O/U 9.5

An excellent attempt to try to figure out New York's Phil Hughes who to his credit hasn't been that bad this season – save for the 19 home runs he’s allowed. One of Hughes' problems has been his inability to put hitters away when ahead in the count. Also interesting is that his seasonal splits show astronomical – and perhaps unexplainable – righty/lefty splits. Against righties: .345 BAA/.377 OBP/.664 SLG. Against lefties: .200 BAA/.269 OBP/.388 SLG. Adding to its oddness, his career numbers show little to no split at all.

The average AL hitter has a .166 BA and .250 SLG in PA when they’ve seen an 0-2 count. In PA when Hughes has gotten ahead 0-2 hitters have a .253 BA and .494 SLG. Even worse, when the count is 0-2 AL hitters have a .146 BA and .222 SLG. Against Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Dodgers (Eovaldi) at San Francisco (Zito)
Recommendation: Los Angeles -110 1st 5 innings

The winning streak continues as we’re swinging a hot stick during our 10-1 MLB baseball run the past 10 days. Included is a perfect 7-0 top-play Big Drive run and we’re primed to add to our June and season-long profits with a top Big Drive total tonight between familiar foes. Projected strong pitching and preferred match-ups get the call as we fire for more profit and green.

Speaking of familiar foes, we chipped-in a solid plus price winner with analysis when the NY Mets beat the Yankees Friday night and our 5-inning recommendation hit a home run with Niese over Pettitte. Tonight a pair of NL West rivals do battle in Read more

MLB Betting Notes: Latos felt Indians knew what was coming

06.25.2012     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Cincinnati's Mat Latos hinted that the Cleveland Indians where stealing signs during last week's game. The Indians pounded Latos for three homers and seven runs in four innings. Two of the long balls came with a runner on second base. Note that Cleveland's lineup was nearly all lefty and lefties have given Latos a ton of problems this season (.319 BAA, .903 OPS).

"I was a little up in the zone. I thought I made some good pitches that they spit on with a runner on second base," said Latos (via MLB.com), after giving up seven runs on eight hits in just four innings on Monday. "I suppose it was kind of ironic. We changed up the signs, for the last hitter unfortunately. The outcomes changed when we changed up the signs today."

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Los Angeles Dodgers at San Francisco Giants

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Dodgers (Eovaldi) +100 at San Francisco (Zito) O/U 7.5
Recommendation: Los Angeles

It’s not hard to make a case for betting against Barry Zito these days. Zito has been nothing short of awful following a brief April resurgence. The Giants are just 4-7 in his last eleven trips to the hill, including a 1-4 mark when he’s been installed as the favorite or a near pick ‘em underdog. He’s been lit up in each of his last three starts: 23 hits and 17 earned runs allowed in just 14.1 innings of work, poised for another rough outing here.

Zito was on the wrong end of a 9-1 loss to the Dodgers in his lone previous start against them this season. The Giants lost his lone start against LA last year. In their World Series winning season of 2010, the Giants lost five of Zito’s six starts against the Dodgers. This is one lineup that knows Zito’s many weaknesses and has proven quite capable of exploiting them.

MLB Gambling Update: Colorado's bullpen holds strong despite increased workload

UPDATE

Update on the Colorado Rockies and their four-man rotation experiment. Over the last five games, Colorado (2-3) starters have gone 3.2, 5, 6, 4.2 and 2.2 innings respectively with a 7.77 ERA. The bullpen (16 appearances) has yielded much better results; 19.2 innings with a 1.37 ERA.

Top pros duke it out at Poker Players Championship

06.25.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Article from the Las Vegas Sun on the $50K buy-in Poker Players Championship at Las Vegas’ Rio Casino. Attendance for the event is reportedly down due in part to ESPN not televising the final table.

“Because the best players play, this is definitely the tournament of champions,” local pro Brian Rast said. “'Poker Players Championship' is the right name for it.”

“Because I was defending my title and have a chance to go back-to-back, there was no way I wasn’t going to play,” Rast said. “But I don’t know if I’ll play in future years. If it goes back to being televised, I’ll play.”

“It makes a big difference because there’s added value to pros. You can get sponsorship deals and going to no-limit hold’em is extra value to me. That’s my best game.”

MLB Handicapping: Chicago's Samardzija showing signs of wearing down

06.25.2012     07:57 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
We'll be keeping a close eye of Chicago's Jeff Samardzija over the next few weeks. His last four outings have lasted only 5, 3.2, 5.1 and 5 innings respectively. During that span, his ERA was 8.53 – though perhaps a tad unlucky with a .410 BABIP. Chicago claims everything is fine but with little to play for, the Cubs can ill-afford to damage one of their few prized possessions. Samardzija is slated to start Wednesday vs. New York.

‘‘One thing that we’ve done with Jeff more so than anybody — and maybe it’s something we also have to look at — is he’s not been able to stay on that five-day rotation because we’re trying to watch pitches,’’ Bosio said. ‘‘And maybe that is a disservice to him. There’s a lot to be said for staying on a regular routine. But when you’re talking about a special talent like Jeff, it’s hard to have it both ways. Do I see a pattern? No. I see a guy, along with the rest of the guys on the Read more

Nevada posed to take the online gambling world by storm

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good detailed article from the Nevada Appeal on the statewide move towards online gambling. There currently are as many as 30 applicants and last week two were approved.

“Senator Heller continues to support legalizing Internet poker and has been working closely with both Senator Reid and Senator (Jon) Kyl on legislation to achieve this goal.”

“I'm determined that Nevada maintain its position as leader of gaming in the world,” Gov. Brian Sandoval said.

Gambling stories from the UK aren't even remotely believable anymore

06.25.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
European sportsbooks will do pretty much anything to market their product – and by anything we mean making commercials like this. Here’s an article so ridiculous and over-the-top that whoever came up with the idea should be out of a job. Apparently a guy made a wager at a William Hill back in 1998 that would have netted him £50,000. The only problem was he was drunk, lost the slip, and forgot exactly which William Hill he made the bet. William Hill hasn't paid out, but is kind enough to consider doing so if the gentleman can "be more specific" and pass a handwriting test. Right.

MLB Betting News: Pittsburgh's Karstens returns for first time since April

06.25.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Pittsburgh (Karstens) at Philadelphia (Blanton)

Pittsburgh's Jeff Karstens (shoulder) will return to the mound for the first time since April 17. Karstens was scheduled to make one last start at Triple-A but the Pirates were pleased enough with his recent bullpen session to let him go tonight vs. Philadelphia. Karstens made one start (five appearances) at Triple-A, allowing 13 earned runs in 16 innings.

Team officials were encouraged to take that step by a bullpen outing on Thursday, one which Karstens called "the best one I've had since Spring Training. Everything clicked."
