Aroldis Chapman wants to be noticed and placed on the DL

06.27.2012     02:25 PM     Printer Friendly
Situations when it is OK for an adult to execute a forward somersault: At a park trying to impress your girlfriend, kids birthday party (after 8 beers), intro to kung-fu class, in place of "roll" during a fire, if you happen to be repeating 2nd grade gym.

Situations when it is not OK for an adult to execute a forward somersault: Everywhere not included on the "OK" list including after a baseball game (even though you struck out the side and can touch 100 mph).

UPDATE

OK, so the Yankees lost CC Sabathia for a few starts. No big deal, they can just chuck out Sweaty Freddy for a few games and hope to just outscore the opposition. Now Buster Olney is reporting Andy Pettitte will miss six weeks with a broken ankle.

Dallas area offscreen sportsbook busted by IRS

06.27.2012     11:11 AM     Printer Friendly
A Dallas area gambling operation may be in some hot water after being discovered by the IRS. It sounds as if it was your typical offscreen shop being run out of Curacao. No one has been arrested but indictments are expected to be made shortly. Interesting that the sportsbook’s website and toll free number are still up and running though it was said to have been sold to a different party last year.

"A group of approximately 22 individuals (conspirators) have conducted an illegal gambling enterprise within the United States," an IRS agent said in court documents. "The gambling organization originated in the Dallas/Fort Worth area."

"The Internet operation itself is lawfully incorporated and licensed in Curacao," Blau said. "Initially, they were led to believe they were operating lawfully in that country."

"These guys thought what they were doing was legal," said Reed's current attorney, Bob Hinton. "It was out in the open ... It's a victimless situation." Read more

MLB Gambling News: Sabathia out until after the All-Star Break

06.27.2012     10:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It wouldn't be a normal day in Major League Baseball without a starting pitcher heading to the DL. This one a little more newsworthy as New York's CC Sabathia will be out until after the All-Start break with a groin injury. The rest could actually be a blessing in disguise considering how many innings that dude has thrown over the last few years. Plus we get an opportunity to bet against this guy.

"You're talking about him missing two starts," manager Joe Girardi said. "You could have tried maybe to have him not start this Friday and then have him start on Wednesday, but our thought is you're risking him maybe missing 7-8 starts if he hurts it worse."

MLB Handicapping: San Diego's Cashner will start Thursday at Houston

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Holy cow! The Padres are going to start a pitcher who has some upside and isn't north of 35 years old. Back in May Andrew Cashner was sent down to Double-A to work on becoming a starter. He and his 99 mph fastball will start tomorrow against Houston. Here is what FanGraphs had to say about him.

MLB Handicapping Update: Cleveland plays 20 of its next 23 vs. AL East

06.27.2012     08:00 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

A little over a month ago, we pointed out some statistics that suggested the Cleveland Indians had been extremely fortunate based on schedule and sheer luck. Things are finally catching up with the Tribe as they've lost four straight and are just one game above .500 at 37-36. Note that Cleveland plays 20 of its next 23 vs. the American League East.

- Luckiest team in the American League based on Baseball Reference's Pythagorean W-L record (+5, 32-41, -0.7 run diff).

- An amazing 12-2 record in 1-run games

- 16-23 vs. teams above .500, 21-13 vs. teams below .500

- Have played only nine games vs. the AL East (2-7). On the flip side, Kansas City has already played 20 games vs. AL East.

MLB Gambling Alert: Warm temps and wind blowing out at Wrigley

06.27.2012     07:20 AM     Printer Friendly
NY Mets (Niese) -115 at Chicago Cubs (Samardzija) O/U 11.5

Warms temps with the wind blowing out at Wrigley this afternoon. CRIS opened the game at 11 and was immediately bet up to 11.5un-120. Jon Niese's groundball/fly ball rate (1.14) ranks 12th among qualified starters. Jeff Samardzija isn't far behind at 25th (0.98). Of course bettors must also contend with two of the worst bullpens in baseball.

MLB Betting News: Rockies call up homer-prone, strikeout artist, rookie, lefty

06.27.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Zimmermann) at Colorado (Cabrera)

If you are pitching in the Colorado Rockies farm system, get ready dude because your number is about to be called. The Rocks dipped into Double-A and grabbed lefty Edwar Cabrera for tonight's game vs. Washington. According to the Denver Post, Cabrera throws a "wicked change-up, a good sinker and a developing sinker." In 2011 he led the minors in strikeouts with 217; 82 in 98 IP at Double-A Tulsa in this year. Cabrera has also allowed 15 home runs because why would Colorado want to call up a guy prone to giving up the long ball for a home start? Crazy, right?

"I made it my goal to reach the big leagues this year. I was surprised when they told me. But I have been pitching with all of my heart and all of my mind to get here," said Cabrera, who will wear No. Read more
