William Hill continues to make waves in Nevada

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
William Hill is doing everything it can to take over sports betting in the state of Nevada.

“We have developed strong relationships with the Affinity Gaming team, providing a first-class betting product and collaborating on creative marketing programs, and we look forward to expanding the partnership,” Joe Asher, William Hill U.S. CEO, said in a statement. “We will be investing in these properties, bringing in new customers and enhancing the customer experience through our wide ranging betting product and technology.”

Shady sportsbooks, prison terms, politicians, bookies and the Boston Red Sox

06.29.2012     07:54 AM     Printer Friendly
We would imagine that after a sentencing hearing, the guilty party is probably not in the best of moods. Alright, I'm already going to prison so I might as well give the judge the finger, tell my cheating ex-wife to go to hell, and rat out as many people as I can. The latter is what occurred when US Rep. John F. Tierney's brother-in-law was sentenced to three years for operating and illegal sportsbook. Daniel Eremian boasted that Tierney knew everything and even watched a Red Sox game with the bookies. Hey, we're all for calling out dirty politicians but didn't Eremian spend a boatload of time denying everything? Now he’s saying Tierney was well aware of all of the illegal things that took place? Boy, this is a tough one. Do we believe the politician or the guy running a shady offshore sportsbook 98% of bettors have never even hear of? Seriously, this is a tough one.

“He knew everything that was going on,” said Daniel Eremian, whose sister, Patrice, is married to Tierney. “He sat in the boxes with Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Pick: Boston Red Sox at Seattle Mariners

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston (Cook) at Seattle (Noesi)
Recommendation: Boston -115 1st 5 innings

Despite failing to post a single strikeout in his last start, Boston's Aaron Cook was pleased with the performance.

“Actually, I felt a lot sharper than I did my last outing down in Pawtucket,” he said.  “So actually kind of surprised. But my sinker was working, my cutter was working, and me and [catcher Kelly Shoppach] got into a great rhythm early and just keep going.”

Cook reportedly added a cutter to his repertoire and it helped him induce 13 groundballs. Unlike most pitchers, it is Cook's groundball rate (rather than strikeout rate) that is the key in measuring whether or not he's in good form.

On the surface, it looks like Seattle's Hector Noesi is your typical home/road Read more

MLB Gambling News: San Francisco Giants record four straight shutouts

06.29.2012     06:39 AM     Printer Friendly
The San Francisco Giants have posted four straight shutouts and moved into sole possession of first place in the National League West. Barry Zito, Ryan Vogelsong, Tim Linecum, Madison Bunmbarner and a handful of relievers combined for 36 innings, 17 hits, 10 walks and 28 strikeouts. The team's ERA dropped from 3.55 to 3.37. Even more crazy is the fact that their best pitcher, Matt Cain, had nothing to do with the remarkable run (he'll start tonight vs. Cincinnati).

MLB Handicapping: Injuries to Kemp and Ethier make turnaround tough for Dodgers

06.28.2012     02:40 PM     Printer Friendly
After starting the month 7-3 (4.7 runs per game), the Los Angeles Dodgers have gone ice cold with the bats. They've won just four of their last 11 and are now tied with San Francisco for first place in the National League West. During their last 15 games, they've scored only 34 runs with only two home runs. And not only is Matt Kemp still on the DL but Andre Ethier is now out with an oblique strain. (That's 22 home runs and 83 RBI for those of you counting at home.)

Sheldon Adelson's impact on internet gambling in Nevada

06.28.2012     12:13 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Las Vegas Sun has an article about the potential impact casino giant Sheldon Adelson could have on online gambling in Nevada. Despite working in the industry, Adelson isn't a fan of online gambling. His reason? Or at least the one he wants everyone to believe: It will cause addiction and be too accessible to minors. Sounds about right.

“He’s gone from, ‘I’m against it, but I won’t be active in it,’ to making more public statements against it, and now he’s told important people in Congress he’s against it,” one lobbyist said. “So he seems to be getting stronger and more active in his opposition.”

Another sports betting operation brought down

06.28.2012     11:59 AM     Printer Friendly
The Feds have been busy of late as yet another online gambling operation was taken down. This one in New York and one of the websites mentioned was jazzsports.com.

According to the charges filed at the time, Cicalo worked as a bookmaker and utilized two sports gambling websites – crownsports.com and jazzsports.com.

Cicalo also employed a number of “super agents” – who, in turn, had several subordinate agents reporting directly to them – and “agents” who were responsible for soliciting new bettors to the organization, maintaining existing bettor relationships and meeting with bettors to collect gambling losses and payout winnings.

The NFL announced it will push back the start of late-afternoon games by 10 minutes – a move that a lot of bettors seem pleased about. Comments below are priceless.

This is awesome for online gamblers who just went all in on a game at 12 and want to get action on the 2nd wave of games……I’ve been there ….plenty of times

One thing the NFL may not realize, and they should…

this helps Las Vegas (and local bookmakers). I know plenty of guys who are sweating out their noon games to determine their play on the 3 o clockers.

Now if Joe Parlay knows he hit his noon win, he’s likely to let it ride at 3:25 instead of making perhaps just a modest wager right before kickoff, if the first game is still in question.

Cha-ching.

Arizona (Bauer) at Atlanta (Jurrjens)
Recommendation: Arizona +100 1st 5 innings

We’re on an 8-1 Big Drive birdie binge and producing our third-straight month of winning and profits in MLB. Tonight we’re firing another fastball with our American League Underdog Game of the Month. That play comes complete with written analysis as we fire for more profit and green.

The much anticipated MLB debut of Diamondbacks flame thrower Trevor Bauer begins tonight. Arizona’s 2011 first round draft pick and no. 3 overall selection has an extensive arsenal that features a 97mph fastball. He’s dominated the minor leagues in his first season going 11-1 with a 2.23 ERA including 116 strikeouts in 93 innings.  Despite the normal jitters in a MLB debut, Bauer should be fine as he’s a fearless competitor with plenty of promise.

Bauer should fare well along with his teammates Read more

Delaware joins the online gambling party

Delaware may not be big, nor can it be pointed out on a map by 72% of the American population, but what it lacks in popularity it makes up for by passing a bill that will allow online gambling.

"We can keep Delaware at the forefront of gambling," said Senate President Pro Tem Anthony DeLuca, D-Newark. "This is an opportunity for Delaware to be a leader in the marketplace."

Betting markets come out in support of Bauer, Cashner and Bumgarner

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some pretty big line moves on today MLB card worth noting.

Atlanta and Jair Jurrjens opened -130 at Pinnacle against Arizona and Trevor Bauer. Bauer will be making his MLB debut and with money coming in on the D-Back, the Braves are now -115 home favorites.

Houston and Dallas Keuchel opened -135 at Pinnacle over San Diego and Andrew Cashner. Cashner was sent down to Triple-A to build endurance and is now ready to start. The betting markets have confidence that Cashner will succeed as the Astros were bet down to -110.

Cincinnati's Johnny Cueto has been virtually unhittable of late, allowing only two earned runs his last three starts (23 IP). He opened as a small road favorite against San Francisco and Madison Bumgarner. But Bumgarner too has been dominant this season and the Giants are riding high after their sweep of the Dodgers put them in a tie for first place in the National League West. The Giants are now -123 home favs.

San Diego (Cashner) at Houston (Keuchel) -110 O/U 8.5
Recommendation: Under

Two promising young pitchers who go about it in different ways face off tonight in Houston. For the Astros, Dallas Keuchel doesn't have a big fastball or premium stuff but instead is a soft-tossing lefty who has a good understanding of how to pitch. His first two starts on paper were not easy (at Texas, vs. Cleveland) and he allowed just two earned runs in 14 innings. Will his success last? I'm not sure, but I think he can be effective the first time through the league. And let's not forget, the offense he's facing tonight is hardly the Rangers or Indians. San Diego has an on-base percentage of .297 vs. lefties with only 10 home runs in 744 at-bats. His counterpart Andrew Cashner does have a big fastball and premium stuff but has at times struggles with command. He however walked only three batters in 14.1 innings during his recent stay at Triple-A. Houston too doesn't have much of an offense, especially Read more

MLB Handicapping: Haren trying to get by without his once potent fastball

06.28.2012     06:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Haren) -115 at Toronto (Cecil) O/U 9.5

LA's Dan Haren opens up about his decline in velocity over the last three years: 90.5 mph to 89.8 to 88.7. Haren seemingly acknowledges that he no longer has a premium fastball and his focus has been more on location. In our opinion, one of Haren's problems is the he’s around the plate almost too much and with diminished velocity, he becomes fairly hittable.

"I think the last thing that any pitcher should do is try to add velocity, because location is a lot more important than velocity," he said. "Look at Scott Downs, he throws 88, 90 mph and he's [allowed] one run this year. He makes quality pitches down in the zone, and that's what it's all about at this level."

"I think I could, definitely," Haren said. Read more
