4th of July Betting Free Play: Baltimore Orioles at Seattle Mariners

07.04.2012     07:06 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore (Tillman) -105 at Seattle (Noesi) O/U 8
Recommendation: Baltimore

I've been playing against Seattle Hector Noesi in some capacity for much of the season. Nearly every number I use to determine the true quality of a starting pitcher tells me that Noesi is one of the worst in baseball. His lone saving grace – at least on the surface – is a respectable 3.86 ERA at home. But take a look at his FIP and xFIP and you'll notice his performances at home aren't too far removed from what he's done on the road (7.42 ERA). Baltimore calls up Charles Tillman for a spot start. His career numbers are not very good (5.58 ERA in 180.2 IP) but he's simply not built to handle the rigors of the American League East every fifth day. He is however capable of showing up at Safeco and keeping the Mariners in check. I'm supporting the road side in this one.

UPDATE

Article from ESPN's Chad Millman on the NFL's decision to push back the start of the late afternoon games.

"It will help, there is no doubt. And since they are doing it, I'd like to see the league stagger the schedule even more," says Vaccaro. "Let's start some games at 10 a.m. Vegas time and others at 11 a.m. And let's turn Monday nights into a doubleheader every week."

"For years, sports-book directors have been saying this was necessary," longtime Vegas reporter Dave Tuley told me last night. Added Lucky's Jimmy Vaccaro, "The 4:15 start had been getting tight. Now I don't think we will ever shut anyone out."

MLB Betting Alert: Markets looking to fade Cueto and Haren

07.03.2012     08:58 AM     Printer Friendly
Two pretty big market moves on today's MLB slate. Cincinnati and Johnny Cueto opened -155 at CRIS and -135 at Pinnacle against Los Angeles and Chris Capuano. The Reds are now around a -117 road favorite. LA's Dan Haren has really struggled of late (20 earned runs last four starts) and yet opened as a -133 road favorite at Pinnacle. He's been bet down to as low as -111 against Cleveland and Zach McAllister. Line history courtesy of 5Dimes.

Football Handicapping: The impact of travel in the NFL

07.03.2012     08:45 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Grantland's Bill Barnwell did some extensive research on the impact of travel in the NFL.

As you might suspect, the NFC West gets royally jobbed by their travel requirements every year. Of the 10 longest distances traveled by teams in a given season over the past 10 years, seven belong to either the Seahawks or the 49ers.

The Steelers played 15 of their 16 games in the Eastern time zone, with a lone trip to the Central time zone waiting for them against the Titans in Week 16. Part of that is a lucky out-of-division schedule, but the Steelers also benefit by playing in a division with three opponents who each reside within 260 miles or so of Pittsburgh.

MLB Handicapping: Understanding the cutter

07.03.2012     07:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The cutter has become the new "it" pitch in baseball over the last few years. But while it has the ability to revitalize a career, it also seems to cause an eventual drop in velocity. Here's an interview with pitching coaches Roger McDowell and Randy St. Claire about the popular offering.

St. Claire: “For me, a cutter is a fastball that’s moving. It runs in on that left-handed hitter’s hands. There is velocity to it, and there is no spin to the ball that you can pick up. A slider has spin and usually a tight dot to it. It’s usually when you throw a poor slider that it gets hit. On a cutter, the hitter does not pick up the spin on the ball. At the last, just before contact, the ball is sliding. For a left-hander it’s sliding to the right, and for a right-hander it’s sliding to the left. It’s very short break, too. A cutter is a contact pitch that makes them mis-hit the ball.”

Full Tilt Poker's founder was arrested for (insert anything associated with the mishandling of money) at New York's JFK airport Monday. He had been hiding out in Ireland for over a year.

Donaghy may get in trouble for employer's shady past

07.03.2012     06:56 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So former NBA referee Tim Donaghy and has been moonlighting as a sports handicapper. Knowing what we know about Donaghy, that doesn't surprise us in the least. But like most things involving Donaghy, there appears to be more to the story. The Philadelphia Daily News reported that his employer, "Danny B", has a federal conviction for his role in a Florida sports betting ring back in 2004. The problem is felons aren't supposed to be hanging out with other felons during their probationary periods. Donaghy claims he had no idea about Danny B’s past.

"When you're paying guys to throw a game, when you're paying officials to make bad calls, you know it costs a lot of money. There's a lot of money at stake here. Millions and millions of dollars. So that's why the cost is so great."

"I'm not a saint. I'm not a [bleeping] choirboy," he said. "I'm sure people are going to take shots at me. I don't give a rat's ass. I'm a survivor. I've been around the block more times than a space Read more
