Australian sports betting is blowing up

Australian sports betting is on the rise, as reported by articles today from the Herald Sun and Daily Telegraph. Of course the lamestream media couldn’t help themselves with their sensationalist headlines – does anyone really believe that “rising online betting fears” really are “gripping the nation” or that sports betting has become an “epidemic” down under?

There’s been a nearly 23% rise on visits to Australian sports betting and lottery sites (how they lump these two together is beyond me) over a six month span between last December and this May; truly an impressive increase in a relatively short amount of time. What does this mean? Australians like to bet, just like citizens from every other country in the world!

The biggest concern for the Aussie’s appears to be the rising offshore competition against their legal, licensed and regulated sportsbooks. And there is also the tried and true, over-the-top fear mongering from the politicians about the supposed evils of sports betting; the same type of Read more

Teddy Covers' Wiseguy Report: WSOP edition

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Even the sharpest bettors in the world don’t spend 100% of their time focusing on sports. This week in particular is arguably the lightest sports betting week of the entire year.

Baseball is on their annual All Star Break through Friday. There’s no Canadian Football or Arena Football scheduled until Thursday, and between the two leagues, the dozen games on tap for the week offer fewer potential betting opportunities than a single day with a full slate of MLB action. Wimbeldon is in the rear view mirror for tennis bettors, as is the Euro 2012 for soccer bettors and UFC 148 for MMA bettors. It’s the time of year where most professional bettors are either on vacation or engaging in another positive expectation activity. Here in Las Vegas, that activity usually involves the World Series of Poker.

In the four decades since its inception, the World Series of Poker has grown from a tiny tournament attracting only a small handful of bettors into the modern behemoth at the Rio; a true spectacle even for seasoned pros. The 2012 WSOP features a whopping 61 different bracelet events over a more than six week span. In this week’s Vegas Wiseguy Read more

Federer win at Wimbledon cashes big futures tickets

07.09.2012     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
This is a great story about a man whose futures bet cashed in large for a local charity in England. While he isn't around to see it perhaps he's smiling somewhere...

Forget the national pride of rooting for Andy Murray, Oxfam!

In 2003 Nick Newlife, from Oxfordshire, made a wager of £1,520, at odds of 66/1, that the Swiss tennis star would win seven Wimbledon titles by 2019.

Mr Newlife died in 2009 but had left the betting slip to Oxfam in his will...

Andrew Barton, from Oxfam, told BBC Radio 5 live that it had been a difficult match to watch because his loyalties were split.

"It's just so unfortunate that he nailed it against Andy Murray," he said.

"I was just sitting there watching the tennis and I kept finding myself calling for Murray, particularly in that long game in the third set.

"And then my head is telling me: Andrew, remember Oxfam gets the money if Federer wins."

And it wasn't just the one win Oxfam has been the beneficiary of either:

Sunday MLB Betting Free Play: Atlanta Braves at Philadelphia Phillies

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Jurrjens) at Philadelphia (Worley) -125 O/U 9
Recommendation: Philadelphia

Atlanta’s a confident team right now having won three straight and four of five with all four wins being by three or more runs. The offense has scored 29 runs in their last five games and the starting staff has rattled off four straight quality wins. The surge has seen them now get to within 0.5 game of the lead in the NL Wild Card race. Conversely, Philadelphia is an absolute mess after 86 games at 37-49, 14 games behind division leading Washington. Local media, the fan base and the team are all extremely frustrated and the Phils are an inch away from being a trade deadline seller. All that being said, Philadelphia looks to be in a good spot today against the Braves and RH starter Jair Jurrjens. While Jurrjens numbers in his three starts since coming off the DL look real good (2-0 / 1.20 WHIP / 1.47 ERA), there are numbers inside the overall façade that have us looking to fade him Read more
