MLB Gambling Alert: OVER in play with McClelland behind the plate in New York

07.16.2012     01:44 PM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tim McClelland is one of the few umpires I still consider playing blind (Hirscbeck the other) even though he hasn't been as OVER heavy this year (10-7 O/U). I did notice five of his last six have cashed tickets with those six averaging 11.5 runs per game (9.5 runs per game avg. on the season). There were some mediocre arms in those six games but that is exactly what we are getting tonight in New York with Phil Hughes and Henderson Alvarez. Also note that both lineups have combined for 242 home runs and there were eight hit in last night’s Angels/Yankees game in the Bronx. Toss in the hot temps and grabbing the 10.5ov-115 is a bet worth making.

Paddy Power interested in joining US market

07.16.2012     01:18 PM     Printer Friendly
Joining the likes of other United Kingdom betting conglomerates, Paddy Power has expressed interest in entering the United States market, specifically in Nevada.

"The US is a key potential new market for us," he said. "We're looking at all opportunities in the US but our expertise is in online gaming. That's obviously what we're looking at doing in Nevada and in other states."

Paddy Power is publicly listed on both the Irish and London stock exchanges and has a market capitalisation of approximately $6 billion.

80% of Paddy Power's revenues come from online gaming activities in markets such as Britain, Ireland and - the most recent entry - Italy.

MLB Betting News: Pirates may regress but have favorable upcoming schedule

07.16.2012     01:10 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LVH oddsmaker Jay Kornegay weighs in on the Pittsburgh Pirates and their chances at not falling off the face of the earth the second half of the season. The Pirates are currently 49-39 and trail Cincinnati by one game in the National League Central. As much fun as it is to root for the Pirates the reality is it is going to be tough for them to finish above .500 let alone remain in the mix for a playoff berth. Concerns have already surfaced about Erik Bedard who has looked rough over his last three starts (14.1 IP, 8.16 ERA). AJ Burnett has also not been as sharp (5.40 last four starts). Pittsburgh is an amazing 13-3 in Burnett's starts this season despite a relatively modest 4.5 runs per game worth of support. And let's also not forget the offense has averaged six runs per game over the last month – a stat that simply cannot be sustained especially with that many holes in the lineup. But before we write them off, note their very favorable upcoming schedule. The Pirates play at Colorado (3), vs. Miami (3), vs. Chicago (3), at Houston (4), at Chicago (3), at Cincinnati (3), vs. Read more

MLB Gambling News: Trade rumors and velocity concerns for Zach Greinke

07.16.2012     12:34 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Keep an eye of Milwaukee's Zach Greinke over the next few weeks. He's been involved in a lot of trade rumors and doesn't seem like the type of guy who performs well with distraction. The Brewers scratched his Wednesday start saying that Greinke needed to "recharge his batteries". Greinke of course had an odd ending to the first half, making three starts in six days – one of which only last four pitches due to an ejection. In the other two starts, he allowed 12 hits and eight earned runs in eight innings. His velocity was reportedly down in his most recent outing.

NFL Handicapping: Teams destine to decline after breakout campaigns

07.16.2012     12:08 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article by the National Football Post on the decline of teams off of "comeback" double-digit win seasons. This is hardly a new concept to oddsmakers and the betting markets but it continues to churn out very consistent results. Detroit, San Francisco and Houston are all "qualifiers" heading into the upcoming campaign.

And in 26 of those instances, teams followed up that impressive 10-win campaign with a record of 9-7 or worse. What does that tell us? Since 2002, there’s an 89.6% chance that a team who bounces back from a losing season to post ten or more wins the following fall is headed for a step in the wrong direction come year three.

What’s even more shocking is that the drop-off that takes place in year three is more significant than you might expect. In those aforementioned instances, the 26 teams that qualified for this study lost an average of 3.9 more games the year after they broke through with ten or more wins the previous season.

MLB Gambling Notes: Zambrano still not right after June back issues

07.16.2012     08:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Washington (Jackson) -105 at Miami (Zambrano) O/U 8

A tale of two seasons for Miami's Carlos Zambrano. Prior to having back problems – which have plagued him for much of his career – Big Z went 11 starts and posted a rock solid 2.81 ERA. But after leaving a June 9 outing will back discomfort, he's been nothing short of a mess with a 8.00 ERA in six starts. Note that Miami was 0-6 in those games and outscored 44-18.

Pre-back issues
73.2 IP, 53 hits, 29 BBs, 56 Ks, .207 BAA, 2.81 ERA

Post-back issues
27 IP, 33 hits, 24 BBs, 19 Ks, .300 BAA, 8.00 ERA

MLB Betting News: Philadelphia's Halladay slated for Tuesday return

07.16.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Philadelphia Phillies, who trail the first place Washington Nationals by 14 games in the National League East, will send Roy Halladay to the hill tomorrow in Los Angeles. According to pitching coach Rich Dubee said Halladay will be on some sort of pitch count.

“All right, fine,” is how Dubee described that outing. “There is rustiness and inconsistency there, but arm wise and working wise, he’s feeling a lot better than he has in a long time.”

Vegas oddsmakers talk customer comps

07.16.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
Various Las Vegas sportbook directors discuss their philosophies on customer comps.

"It's difficult when you have a different operator running the casino than you do the book," said Vic Salerno, chief technology officer and chairman of the board at William Hill in Las Vegas. "There is an automatic conflict between the two businesses."

"The comps have really dwindled ... with each property being different," said Mark Goldman, director of race and sports operations at Cantor Gaming.

"We've kept it pretty much the same for 23 years," Kornegay said. "We've made some adjustments over the years to recover costs, but that's it."

Irish sportbook Paddy Power featured on Undercover Boss episode

07.16.2012     06:53 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Have you ever seen the show Undercover Boss? It is where higher-ups from various corporations hide their identity and see what life is like for everyday workers. Of course each worker they come across is amazingly efficient and driven and provides copious amount of inspiration. Anyway, Irish sportsbook Paddy Power will send one of its execs out into the field for an upcoming episode that will be broadcast in the United States later this year.

He goes undercover in various departments within the betting firm’s Irish and UK operations. These include its high street betting shops, e-gaming division, phone betting and customer services department. There, he works with fellow employees without them ever realising who he is.

Slot machines stand no chance against angry gamblers

07.15.2012     06:32 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
So beating up slot machines out of anger is apparently the cool thing to do in New York these days.

“I hit the machine because I lost five grand,’’ said a 34-year-old man, identified in court records as Jashim Uuddin, after he caused $2,000 in damage with a punch in January, according to a complaint.

‘‘It happens like three, four times a week, and that’s only on my shift,’’ said Mike Persaud, a security guard at the casino.

The one about the artist who paid off his bookie in paintings

07.15.2012     06:20 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
This is a pretty weird story. It involves a bookie, a famous artist, a few paintings, some gambling debts, and a ton of money.

'Lucian, who was a fanatical gambler, then pricked up his ears when he realised this man was a bookmaker from Ballymena and started betting with McLean.'

A friend added: 'Freud ran up  massive debts, but apparently found Alfie McLean an irresistibly huge and ugly man.

'Freud painted people as he saw them, and that was not necessarily in a flattering light.

'Lucian introduced him to Francis Bacon, who was also a gambler.'

According to poll, California residents favor sports betting, split on online poker

07.15.2012     06:00 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

California residents were polled on the current topic of gambling and the results were interesting. Nearly 60% were on board with sports betting in the state while the decision was split on government regulated online poker.

"We'll have a whole new clientele. A lot of poker players do like to gamble on sports, but there's a lot of sports gamblers who just like to be on their teams. So that would definitely bring more business," Ryan Frazier, casino host at the 500 Club, said.

"Where they have the opportunity to provide that service or amenity to the public then, of course, they have to hire more staff, which means that staff is purchasing more goods and services. So it's just the multiplier effect of how that dollar starts to turn over," Perea Read more

MLB Handicapping: Atlanta's Sheets makes first start since July 2010

07.15.2012     05:47 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
NY Mets (Santana) at Atlanta (Sheets) -105 O/U 8.5

Back from the dead, Ben Sheets and his surgically repaired arm are slated to go today against the New York Mets. Sheets last pitched in the Majors in mid-July of 2010. He made two Double-A starts, striking out 10 and walking one in 10.2 innings.

"Everything's working," Sheets said Thursday. "Everything's feeling great. I've been throwing the ball good. Keep making good pitches, you'll get outs."

"I wasn't watching anything other than that he felt good and all of a sudden, 'Oh, my shoulder's sore or my arm's sore,'" Gonzalez said. "But he was fine and threw some pretty good curveballs."
