MLB Handicapping: Scherzer needs more than luck for strong second half

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Williams) at Detroit (Scherzer) -145 O/U 9

Article calling for a big second half turnaround from Detroit’s Max Scherzer. They say he's been the unluckiest pitcher in baseball and while there is some truth to that, it is quite possible his unlucky ways will continue. A lot of folks point to his BABIP (.356) as an indicator but teammate Rick Porcello's is even higher at .358 and a host of other Tigers have BABIP's above .300. This of course because the defense is awful and has no range. Scherzer can better control the outcomes of his games because of his ability to miss bats but don't expect his BABIP to fall to .300 anytime soon. Lastly, Scherzer isn't exactly the soundest pitcher in the game when it comes to mound smarts. He's notorious for mowing down hitters for three of four straight innings and then losing focus at seemingly the Read more

Just when it looked like the Boston Red Sox might have a full complement of players, the team announced that David Ortiz (Achilles) will be making an appearance on the DL. This after the Red Sox finally got Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford back in the lineup. And Dustin Pedroia is slated to return today after his stint on the DL. Ortiz is currently the only hitter in the American League win an OPS above 1.000.

MLB Gambling Free Pick: Seattle Mariners at Kansas City Royals

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Millwood) at Kansas City (Chen)
Recommendation: Seattle Team Total Over 4

The Seattle Mariners have scored 4 or more runs in 56% of their road games this season. Since June 1, no doubt assisted by the warm weather, they've played 17 road games and notched four or more runs 10 times with more than half of those games played in the pitcher friendly environments of Oakland, San Diego and Anaheim. After notching nine runs on back-to-back nights against the Royals, they have another shot at big production against Bruce Chen and a potentially weary bullpen. In Chen's 19 starts, the Royals allowed four or more runs 10 times including four of his last six outings. Chen is in his preferred role at home and the Mariners do struggle against lefties – though Chen doesn't have much of a split. Still, he's hardily in good form having allowed 18 earned runs over his last three starts. The Mariners have quietly scored the most runs in baseball (238) on the road. And while they've Read more

Polls, schmolls. Just give me a side and a total and let me handicap

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
In my world, college football polls are pretty much meaningless. Just tell me the matchup, maybe an injury report, hang a side and total and let me work. Oddsmakers and bettors are without question more knowledgeable about what goes in in the world of college football compared to say, Chris Berman. But when asked to rank the top five teams in the country, I simply couldn’t do it – in part because I don't care. Sure, some of us use "power ratings" as a way of judging teams, but again, for much of the season, we deal with situation where one teams is "good" and the other team is "bad" and the betting markets determine the gap. So the question came up, should our industry get involved in determining who gets a bid into the newly formatted college football playoff system? The short answer is no, because I don’t have the time nor the desire to do anything but try cash tickets.

“That’s not what we do,” said Pete Korner, owner and head oddsmaker for The Sports Read more

College Football Handicapping: Alabama's opponents with fewer bye weeks

07.18.2012     10:28 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Compared to the rest of the SEC, over the last two years Alabama got the shaft by playing a ridiculous amount of teams coming in off of a bye week. Nick Saban wasn't too pleased about it. This year, nearly all of the Crimson Tide's opponent won't enjoy such an advantage – not that it matters for a majority of them. Of Bama's 12 opponents, only two come in off byes and one of them is Western Carolina. The other though is arguably the biggest game of the season as LSU will be rested and ready when Alabama heads to Baton Rouge on November 3.

Alabama's Schedule (Opponent's Previous Game)
9/1 vs. Michigan (1st game)
9/8 vs. Western Kentucky (vs. Austin Peay)
9/15 at Arkansas (at UL-Monroe)
9/22 vs. Florida Atlantic (at Georgia)
9/29 vs. Ole Miss (at Tulane)
9/6 BYE WEEK
10/13 at Missouri (vs. Vanderbilt)
10/20 at Tennessee (at Mississippi State)

MLB Handicapping Notes: Sabathia's velocity up in first start off DL

07.18.2012     09:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some positives on CC Sabathia's first start off of the DL in which he tossed six innings of shutout ball (1 BB, 6 Ks) against Toronto. According to one Yankees blog, his velocity was up as was the movement on his pitches.

Comparing his pre-DL and post-DL starts above, you’ll see that he’s gained from .5 to a full 1 MPH of additional velocity in both the average speed and maximum speed. The difference in movement is the most exciting change, he’s adding adding 2 inches of additional rising action on both his fastballs, as well as an inch on the slider.

Blog accuses Sheldon Adelson of profits from prostitution

07.18.2012     09:48 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Everyone knows casino mogul – and anti-online gambling advocate – Sheldon Adelson has floated the GOP a boatload of money. So it shouldn't come as a surprise to see the Democrats try to dig up some dirt on this guy. Someone in the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee decided to fire out a blog about Adelson's money somehow coming from a Chinese prostitution operation. Adelson in turn is threating to sue for libel.

"Breaking: House Republicans' Biggest Donor Approved 'Prostitution Strategy' in China" was the headline of a June 29 statement from the DCCC and a July 2 statement asked what House Republicans will do when their "Chinese prostitution money comes from billionaire Sheldon Adelson."

What we can learn from prediction markets

07.18.2012     09:31 AM     Printer Friendly
Cool article from the New York Times on prediction markets.

(It is sometimes said that Las Vegas-type sports-event betting markets, such as the one that produced the odds on the Chicago Cubs, are not pure prediction markets because some participants are bookmakers and others are casual bettors, so the odds do not reflect precisely how the money is bet. But that’s my point: successful prediction markets do not consist solely of insider traders).

A few requests for Pete Rose's new reality TV show

07.18.2012     09:24 AM     Printer Friendly
Pete Rose on reality TV? OK, but before we proceed, here are our demands. We want a list of everything he bet for that particular day. Did he 20* the Reds? Does he have an account at 5Dimes? Does he play totals or sides? These are things we NEED to know. Also, we'd love to hear the audio of a conversation with his local. "Yeah, Steve? It's Pete. What do you mean you're putting me on 20 cent lines? You got to be kidding." We see no reason why The Learning Channel can't incorporate that kind of stuff into the show.

Chicago WS (Hernandez) at Boston (Doubront) -165 O/U 11

Chicago lefty Pedro Hernandez will make his MLB debut tonight in Boston. Hernandez has been in the minors since 2007. In 80.2 IP at Double- and Triple-A this season, he accumulated 48 strikeouts and 19 walks.

“He and [Jose Quintana] were in the same role [during spring training],’’ manager Robin Ventura said. “You kind of hope to catch lightning twice, really.’’

MLB Gambling News: Does Aaron Cook still have value?

07.18.2012     07:15 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Boston's Aaron Cook and his two strikeouts in 29.2 innings are a hot topic in the blogosphere. Some will immediately point to his inevitable regression. While others, like Deadspin, argue that his lack of walks (2) and strike throwing ability allow him to "defy the odds" when it comes to sabermetrics. My take on Cook is this: He's a veteran guy who is trying to prove he can still pitch at the MLB level. That motivation alone is certainly worth something. Next, he's getting a good amount of groundballs (58.5%) which has always been a huge part of his success. He also added a cutter to his arsenal which is a nice compliment to a sinker.

Now unfortunately, Cook IS going to regress. When that many balls are being put in play (.248 BABIP), some will eventually find holes, gaps Read more
