NBA looks into instant replay, jersey ads

07.20.2012     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA is considering adding instant replay for the 2013-14 season. If approved it will be used to review flagrant fouls, late game block/charge calls, and goaltending. The league is also looking into the concept of jersey advertisements. LeBron James rocking a Miller Lite insignia? Kobe donning the 5Dimes logo? Sounds good to us.

Sportsbook owner receives probation

Dude decides the best way to fund house down payment is roulette

07.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Here's a tip: If you’re trying to put together enough scratch for a down payment on a house, we suggest not playing roulette as a means of achieving your goal. After being told by multiple Las Vegas casinos that $20K was the single bet limit, a Hawaii man was given the green light to wager $66K at Binion's. Of course he won because no one wants to read about a loser.

“We are in the gambling business; this is what we do,” Terry Caudill, owner of Binion’s and the Four Queens Hotel & Casino, said in a statement. “It is somewhat unusual that he wanted to risk such a large amount. I consider these kinds of requests on a case-by-case basis.”

Nevada sportsbooks not offering odds on Olympic events

07.20.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What a crock. Nevada bettors will have to use their offshore accounts if they want to bet on the 2012 London Olympics. The Nevada Gaming Control Board considers the Olympics to be an amateur event and sportsbooks are not allowed to accept bets. Yet, after taking all but 3.4 seconds to ponder that concept, aren't college football and basketball amateur sports (outside of the SEC)?

Handicapper Alf Musketa's UFC 149 Betting Preview and Free Pick

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
By: Alf Musketa
Event: UFC 149
When: Saturday, July 21
Where: Calgary, Alberta, Saddledome

This card is filled with substitutes because injuries have taken their toll on several fighters that were originally scheduled, but that can sometimes lead to interesting styles and matchups. Renan Barao replaces the injured UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominic Cruz as the main fight.

There are no less than seven Canadians on this fight card and home crowd/field/ring or octagon advantage is a real factor in Mixed Martial Arts. I've seen fighters in Australia that had no business at winning their fight come through at +300. Brazil a hot bed of fighting talent and a huge MMA fan base recently hosted UFC 147 where nine of the 11 fights were won by the home country/home crowd favorite. On Saturday we like one particular Canadian fighter who is making his much maligned and much anticipated UFC debut, which is not usually a good thing unless they debut at home.

MLB Betting Notes: Washington's plan for Strasburg's innings

07.20.2012     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Hanson) at Washington (Strasburg) -140 O/U 7

It would have been a lot less confusing if Washington came out and said "no comment" in regards to Stephen Strasburg's innings? For starters, GM Mike Rizzo is reportedly the last and only word in deciding if and when Strasburg gets shut down. Rizzo claims it will be nothing more than the eye test. Strasburg meanwhile says they'll have to gang tackle him (actually that was our words) in order to stop him from throwing. Either way, the Nats have done a pretty good job so far with Strasburg at a modest 105 innings (18 starts). He’s topped 100 pitches just seven times. They claim once they shut him down, he's done until 2013.

"There is no magic number," Rizzo said. "It will be the eye test. (Manager) Davey (Johnson) won't decide and ownership won't decide. It Read more

Vegas sportsbooks may change football parlay cards

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Some Las Vegas sportsbooks are considering making adjustments to their football parlay cards.

“We are going to review the pay charts, but one thing I will tell you for sure is we’re not going to be offering the entire bowl schedule on the cards weeks before the games are played, but rather only the games that are played that week,“ said Osborne.

NCAAF Gambling: Mississippi State names Russell starting QB

07.19.2012     11:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Normally, we don't get that excited when a team announces their starting quarterback in mid-July. But said team happens to Mississippi State who has built a strong reputation of not being able to throw the football. The good news is things have improved since head coach Dan Mullen took over in 2009. Mullen named junior Tyler Russell his Week 1 starter. Russell made a few starts last season and finished with 1,034 yards, 8 TDs and 4 INTs. He'll have plenty of opportunity for success early on with games against Jackson State, Auburn (worst pass defense in the SEC last season), Troy, and South Alabama.

MSU QB Rating Ranking in SEC
2011- 9th 124.15
2010 - 7th 139.25
2009 - 10th 110.16
2008 - 8th 102.54
2007 - 13th 98.46

College Football Handicapping: Touchbacks to be placed at 25-yard line

07.19.2012     10:14 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
College football has a few rule changes that bettors should be aware about. For starters, kickoffs have been moved from the 30 to 35-yard line. Second, touchbacks will be placed at the 25 instead of the 20. The NFL made similar changes last year and the average starting field position was nearly five yards less than 2010. Here is some commentary of how the rule changes could impact college football.

With regards to strategy go ahead and call me a kook because if I'm the head coach or special teams coordinator I'm not going for the touchback. The 25 yardline is five more yards than I want to give up for free and moving the kickoff to the 35 is five less yards my guys have to run. We're looking at a 65 yard coverage zone with a five yard head start. A 40 yard sky kick with a fair catch gets you to that same 25. A longer sky kick, fielded by a fullback or a linebacker in the game to block gets Read more

MLB Handicapping: Scherzer needs more than luck for strong second half

07.19.2012     07:09 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
LA Angels (Williams) at Detroit (Scherzer) -145 O/U 9

Article calling for a big second half turnaround from Detroit’s Max Scherzer. They say he's been the unluckiest pitcher in baseball and while there is some truth to that, it is quite possible his unlucky ways will continue. A lot of folks point to his BABIP (.356) as an indicator but teammate Rick Porcello's is even higher at .358 and a host of other Tigers have BABIP's above .300. This of course because the defense is awful and has no range. Scherzer can better control the outcomes of his games because of his ability to miss bats but don't expect his BABIP to fall to .300 anytime soon. Lastly, Scherzer isn't exactly the soundest pitcher in the game when it comes to mound smarts. He's notorious for mowing down hitters for three of four straight innings and then losing focus at seemingly the Read more

Just when it looked like the Boston Red Sox might have a full complement of players, the team announced that David Ortiz (Achilles) will be making an appearance on the DL. This after the Red Sox finally got Jacoby Ellsbury and Carl Crawford back in the lineup. And Dustin Pedroia is slated to return today after his stint on the DL. Ortiz is currently the only hitter in the American League win an OPS above 1.000.
