MLB Handicapper Free Play: Seattle Mariners at Tampa Bay Rays

07.21.2012     08:57 AM     Andrew Lange     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Andrew Lange

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Seattle (Vargas) at Tampa Bay (Cobb)
Recommendation: Seattle Team Total Over 3ov-119 @ Pinnacle

Since throwing seven shutout innings with 10 strikeouts against Miami back in mid-June Alex Cobb has been so-so with a 6.75 ERA in four starts. I'll cut him some slack knowing that he was thrown to the wolves against KC because the bullpen was overworked and two of the other starts were against lefty-heavy Cleveland. He's better than his 4.92 ERA but not in great form and facing an capable offense tonight in Seattle. Also keep in mind that the Rays used all their big relief arms last night in a 14-inning win. The Mariners have scored 3 runs or more in 22 of 33 road games against right-handed starters. But the ratio is much higher of late with 14 of their last 17 notching 3 or more (12 of those hit four or more). Note that hitter friendly ump Tim McClelland is behind the plate. Not against playing the game over but Vargas has actually been throwing well and could be a good matchup against Read more

MLB Gambling News: Braves trail Nationals by 2.5 games after wild 11-inning victory

07.21.2012     07:06 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baseball has an incredibly long season, and individual wins and losses rarely carry over the next day. But Atlanta's dramatic come-from-behind victory over Washington last night is likely to be felt by both teams starting today and beyond. Down 9-0 after five innings, the Braves rallied back to win 11-10 in the 11th. The Braves now trail the Nationals by only 2.5 games.  The two teams close out their series with a double-header today.

"I don't even know where to start," said Jones, who drove in two runs with a single in the Braves' four-run eighth inning. "I still can't believe it. I mean, 9-0. That's never happened to me since I've been here."

"A really crazy game, but it counts, right?" Janish said. "All that matters is that we end up with one more than them, so it worked out."

NCAAF Gambling: Sun Belt heavy on returning quarterbacks

07.20.2012     02:16 PM     Printer Friendly
Returning quarterbacks has been a popular subject among the Sun Belt’s preseason coverage. Nine of last year's 10 starters are back. The only team without a returning starter is FIU – perhaps it says something about the Sun Belt that despite a new signal caller, the Panthers are picked to win the league. Below is a list of who is back.

Should bettors be concerned about the NFL referee lockout?

07.20.2012     01:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some updated links on the NFL referee lockout situation. Some folks are making a big deal about it, including the refs currently on strike who (shocker!) said the level of acumen will be alarmingly low.

“You have to realize that there is no game if the competitive nature of this game isn’t controlled,” Markbreit said this morning during a visit on the Danny Mac Show on WSCR-670 AM in Chicago. “The NFL officials, the best in the land, are the ones that control this game. When you put replacements in there, you are compromising the nature of the game.

Others, like Chicago's Brian Urlacher, don’t seem to think it will matter.

"Were the refs that we had before good? Seriously, it doesn’t really matter. Yes, there are officials that have been around a while and you know their names and have relationships. But at the same time, it Read more

NBA looks into instant replay, jersey ads

07.20.2012     08:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The NBA is considering adding instant replay for the 2013-14 season. If approved it will be used to review flagrant fouls, late game block/charge calls, and goaltending. The league is also looking into the concept of jersey advertisements. LeBron James rocking a Miller Lite insignia? Kobe donning the 5Dimes logo? Sounds good to us.

Dude decides the best way to fund house down payment is roulette

07.20.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
Here's a tip: If you’re trying to put together enough scratch for a down payment on a house, we suggest not playing roulette as a means of achieving your goal. After being told by multiple Las Vegas casinos that $20K was the single bet limit, a Hawaii man was given the green light to wager $66K at Binion's. Of course he won because no one wants to read about a loser.

“We are in the gambling business; this is what we do,” Terry Caudill, owner of Binion’s and the Four Queens Hotel & Casino, said in a statement. “It is somewhat unusual that he wanted to risk such a large amount. I consider these kinds of requests on a case-by-case basis.”

Nevada sportsbooks not offering odds on Olympic events

07.20.2012     07:13 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
What a crock. Nevada bettors will have to use their offshore accounts if they want to bet on the 2012 London Olympics. The Nevada Gaming Control Board considers the Olympics to be an amateur event and sportsbooks are not allowed to accept bets. Yet, after taking all but 3.4 seconds to ponder that concept, aren't college football and basketball amateur sports (outside of the SEC)?

Handicapper Alf Musketa's UFC 149 Betting Preview and Free Pick

By: Alf Musketa
Event: UFC 149
When: Saturday, July 21
Where: Calgary, Alberta, Saddledome

This card is filled with substitutes because injuries have taken their toll on several fighters that were originally scheduled, but that can sometimes lead to interesting styles and matchups. Renan Barao replaces the injured UFC Bantamweight Champion Dominic Cruz as the main fight.

There are no less than seven Canadians on this fight card and home crowd/field/ring or octagon advantage is a real factor in Mixed Martial Arts. I've seen fighters in Australia that had no business at winning their fight come through at +300. Brazil a hot bed of fighting talent and a huge MMA fan base recently hosted UFC 147 where nine of the 11 fights were won by the home country/home crowd favorite. On Saturday we like one particular Canadian fighter who is making his much maligned and much anticipated UFC debut, which is not usually a good thing unless they debut at home.

MLB Betting Notes: Washington's plan for Strasburg's innings

07.20.2012     06:34 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Atlanta (Hanson) at Washington (Strasburg) -140 O/U 7

It would have been a lot less confusing if Washington came out and said "no comment" in regards to Stephen Strasburg's innings? For starters, GM Mike Rizzo is reportedly the last and only word in deciding if and when Strasburg gets shut down. Rizzo claims it will be nothing more than the eye test. Strasburg meanwhile says they'll have to gang tackle him (actually that was our words) in order to stop him from throwing. Either way, the Nats have done a pretty good job so far with Strasburg at a modest 105 innings (18 starts). He’s topped 100 pitches just seven times. They claim once they shut him down, he's done until 2013.

"There is no magic number," Rizzo said. "It will be the eye test. (Manager) Davey (Johnson) won't decide and ownership won't decide. It Read more
