College Football Betting: Auburn Tigers Season Over/Under Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Auburn Tigers
Recommendation: Under 7.5 wins (-170 @ Pinnacle, Greek, 5Dimes)

There has been some remarkable staff turnover since head coach Gene Chizik arrived on the Plains, and this year he will once again be breaking in two new coordinators. Longtime Atlanta Falcons assistant Brian VanGorder is the new defensive coordinator and Scot Loeffler, formerly a Temple assistant, is the new offensive coordinator. I’m sure Chizik is confident in the two new hires, but the fact is that neither of them have been a successful coordinator at this level. They are also implementing new schemes – drastically different than what was ran last year – and do not have a lot of experienced players to run them.

Offensively, Auburn struggled in 2011, averaging just 337 yards per game with no stability at the quarterback position. There is still no clear cut #1 signal caller on the roster this year, although it looks as if sophomore Kiehl Frazier will get the starting nod over junior Clint Moseley. Their top offensive weapon, running back Michael Dyer, transferred to Arkansas State, leaving no power back that can handle the ball 30 times per Read more

Buffalo Bills
Starting point:
Last year, Buffalo went 6-10 SU, 6-9-1 ATS and 11-4-1 to the Over. They had a net of -0.2 yards per play (ypp) and +1 TO margin vs. a tougher than average schedule.  The Bills started 5-2 but were decimated with injuries and closed out the season on a dismal 1-8 SU, 2-7 ATS slide.

2012 Issues: This year, the Bills schedule is significantly easier based on the current 2012 Season O/U Win Total numbers.  Buffalo will go from having a tougher than average schedule to having an easier than average slate; one of the biggest differentials from last year to this year in the entire league.

The Bills have a 12-year playoff drought – their last postseason appearance came back in January, 2000 in the Music City Miracle game at Tennessee. They signed Ryan Fitzpatrick to a six year $59 million contract last year, and then proceeded to watch Fitzpatrick lead the NFL with 23 interceptions.  WR Stevie Johnson is their lone proven playmaker, and former #1 pick,  CJ Spiller, has not yet lived up to expectations with only seven TD’s in his first two years in the Read more

College Football Gambling: North Carolina Tar Heels Season O/U Wins

North Carolina Tar Heels
Recommendation: Over 7.5 wins (-125 @ Greek)

Despite being banned from the ACC Championship game and a post season bowl berth, North Carolina players banded together and decided to return to Chapel Hill and play with a purpose this season. That certainly pleased incoming, first year head coach Larry Fedora who will reap the benefits of some great recruiting done by his predecessor Butch Davis. The cupboard is very much full and this Tar Heel squad is a legitimate threat to Virginia Tech which is favored to win the ACC Coastal Division.

After seeing what Clemson OC Chad Morris’ high octane, spread offense did to this conference in his first try, there’s every reason to project Fedora’s version will do the same. Led by sopomoreh QB Bryn Renner, ACC Rookie Player of the Year RB Giovanni Bernard, and an extremely talented and experienced OL, huge numbers figure to be put up by this offense. Renner lost top WR Dwight Jones but he’s got a strong rapport with this returning corps which features three receivers who averaged 20.7+ yards per catch. North Carolina has the type of explosive run/pass Read more

College Football Gambling: Kansas State Wildcats Season Over/Under Wins

Kansas State Wildcats
Recommendation: Under 8 wins (-165 @ Greek)

2011 was a terrific season for the Wildcats who continued to overachieve under head coach Bill Snyder.  I know it’s like standing on a cliff, lifting one knee to your nose and trying to balance yourself without falling but I’m going to fade KSU here. Underestimating this team is hazardous to the bankroll but I just can’t see this 2012 season producing eight regular season victories. The personnel is there on paper to again be productive offensively, defensively and on special teams but there are multiple areas where last year’s results may not be duplicated.

First and easily the most important is the 317 carries recorded by quarterback Collin Klein. It’s almost impossible to see him surviving the 12-game season if he has to tote the ball that often again. Honestly, it’s hard to see him starting and playing all 12 games if he reduces that number to 250. Klein has the ultimate bullseye on his chest and opposing defenses are going to focus on hitting him repeatedly. Should he get hurt, there’s a pair of freshman behind him with zero Read more

Former handicapper turned politician downplays past and it (shocker) backfires

07.27.2012     06:26 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Another story on Georgia Senate Majority Leader Chip Rogers. When it was discovered that Rogers was at one time "Will the Winner", handicapper extraordinaire, he did what any politician would do and downplayed it. Now what Rogers did was really no big deal – IF he would have come right out and said it rather than act like he wasn't involved in the big bad shady gambling industry. So now it comes out that he was pretty much involved in the day-to-day operations which make his original statements (“Hey, I was just playing a part.”) look pretty silly.

“The whole key to having offshore people involved in your enterprise was to get them to pay advertising bills for you and you in essence would get your advertising for free,” he said.

“Sometimes I would trade for a Johnny DeMarco ad in [Rogers’] book,” Edens said. “There Read more

MLB Handicapping: Pitchers who lose velocity in summer often don't get it back

07.27.2012     06:04 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good article from FanGraphs about starting pitchers who see a drop in velocity during the summer months.

What we find is that losing velocity in June or July increases a starter’s odds of finishing the year with an overall velocity loss the most (11.9 and 13.7 respectively for June and July). Losing velocity in April isn’t insignificant, but relative to other months it is less worrisome.

To bottom-line the findings: by June, we should have a pretty good idea of how hard a pitcher is going to throw for the rest of the season. If a pitcher is down at least 1 mph in June relatively to the previous June we shouldn’t expect them to magically recover their velocity in the second half of the season. Part of this, of course, is timing–you don’t have as many pitches left in the season to recover.

Paddy Power's tongue-in-cheek billboard campaign stays

07.27.2012     05:56 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

Update on the war waged between the London Organzing Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) and Irish sportsbook Paddy Power. Looks as if the boys that take bets won this round.

“In what must be deemed a gold-medal-winning u-turn, London 2012 organisers, Locog, have reversed their position … which demanded the removal of Paddy Power’s latest advertising campaign from poster sites around the Olympic city.

“Coincidentally [the] change of heart by Locog, which was communicated by their law firm, Freshfields, was taken just moments before Paddy Power’s law firm, Charles Russell, were set to enter the High Court in London seeking a court order against the Olympic organisers.”
