Sportsmemo Handicapper Teddy Covers' AFC North Gambling Preview

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Baltimore Ravens
Starting point:
In 2011, the Ravens finished 12-4 SU, 8-7-1 ATS (for the third consecutive year) and 10-6 to the Over. In fact, the Ravens are the only team in the NFL to make the playoffs in each of the last four years, a beacon of stability in a tumultuous league. Not only that, Baltimore has managed to win at least one playoff game in each of those four seasons, and came within a missed Billy Cundiff field goal in the AFC Championship Game of potentially reaching the Super Bowl last season.

Baltimore faced one of the easiest schedules in the league last year, facing only two playoff teams from outside their division all season. The Ravens outgained their opponents by 0.6 yards per play and finished +2 in turnovers. The Ravens also had the #1 red zone defense in the NFL last year, allowing opponents to convert for touchdowns only 38% of the time.

2012 Issues: The single biggest issue for Baltimore in 2012 is how tough their schedule is; a dramatic change compared to last year. The Ravens also have their fourth new defensive coordinator in the last four years (Dean Pees); now that Chuck Pagano is the new Read more

NFL Handicapping: Offensive line taking shape for Kansas City Chiefs

07.30.2012     01:53 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Positive article about the Kansas City Chiefs and their offensive line.

“We’ve got a lot of ability,’’ Winston said. “We’ve got a lot of athleticism. We’ve got a lot of guys with experience combined with some youth. I really expect us to do some good things. I expect us to be able to get Peyton and Charles into the open field and let them do their thing. I think it’s on us to get them into the secondary.

“There’s no reason for us not to be a good offensive line, a line that can put up some big yards in the run game and allow (Matt) Cassel to have some time back there.’’

NFL Handicapping: Chargers confident new offensive line will be better

07.30.2012     11:54 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
You know who wasn't very good last season? San Diego's offensive line. Their struggles were in large part due to injuries as 11 different players started. There were a few games where the personnel were so weak they simply didn't stand a chance. Despite some offseason turnover, things appear better heading into camp this season.

"It's a lesson we all learned," said center Nick Hardwick, who started every game last season and is the line's undisputed leader. "You have to be ready to step in at a moment's notice, and you have to be ready to step in and put a winning performance on the field."

"It's important to work together, communicate and be disciplined every day we practice or sit in a meeting room," Hardwick said. "The communication is the biggest thing. I need to know where a guy's going to react and exactly what he's thinking on every play. That line of communication must be open on the inside between me, (Louis) and Read more

College Football Handicapping: Syracuse faces tough, road-heavy schedule

07.30.2012     11:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
After Syracuse's breakdown 2010 campaign that saw them finish 8-5 SU/ATS, the Orange jumped out to a 5-2 start last season including an impressive 49-23 Week 8 win over West Virginia. But the following week, they were blown out at Louisville 27-10 – the first loss in what started an 0-5 SU/ATS run to end the campaign. Expectations are low this season with only 12 returning starters, six true road games and another neutral site affair against USC in New Jersey. 5Dimes has Syracuse's season over/under wins at 5.5un-245. Senior quarterback Ryan Nassib returns after breaking a handful of school records last season. The offensive line returns three starters and needs to improve on last season's 120 ypg rushing and 3.6 ypc.

"I think the team as a whole, and myself, have things to prove," he said in a recent interview at Manley Field House. "Our offense has a lot to prove, because we are better than what we’ve put out there on the field. I Read more

NFL Gambling News: Miami's Garrard say he expects to be starter

07.30.2012     08:22 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good news Dolphins fans, quarterback David Garrard thinks his chances of starting are pretty good. Garrard made the Pro Bowl in 2010 but missed all of last season after having back surgery. Garrard will be competing against Matt Moore and first round draft pick Ryan Tannehill.

"I think my chances are pretty good," he said Friday. "I don't think they would have me here or even say that it was open competition if my chances weren't good. I know I can still play.

"The quarterback position is the one position that you can clearly see most of the time who should be out there. As long as I continue to do my job and do what I can do and play my best, then hopefully that's enough."

South Carolina newspaper pulls out all of the stops in article on sports betting

07.30.2012     07:47 AM     Printer Friendly
Someone at South Carolina’s The State REALLY likes anti-sports betting clichés. Proceed with caution.

The theme of the story surrounds an accused murder (strategically pictured in cuffs at the top) that reportedly served as a local bookie. The author wants you to believe the two are in some way linked because everyone knows local bookies are extremely prone to committing capital offences.

Next, we have this quote which makes absolutely no sense (or was transcribed completely wrong).

“Even in small towns, there’s usually someone who makes sports book,” said Frank Quinn, a Columbia area psychotherapist who’s spent more than 30 years treating various addictions, including gambling, in South Carolina.

Now we have a law enforcement officer admitting that they simply have bigger fish to fry than to go after local bookies. He and some of his fellow co-workers – with over 30 years of experience – couldn't even remember making a single sports betting Read more

Irish sailor accused of making bets (and winning) on competition

07.30.2012     06:55 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It just wouldn't be an Olympics without some sort of betting scandal. Everyone is up in arms because back at the 2008 Beijing Olympics an Irish sailor made some bets (and won) on someone (boat?) he was competiting against. He made said wagers legally and ended up taking home €4,000.

According to the Independent, which said it had obtained "detailed documentary evidence," the bets were placed the day before the event at a price of 12 to 1. Both bets paid off, and the athlete withdrew 3,600 euro ($4,432) from his account with a bookmaker upon returning from the event, the Independent reported. According to Independent, the first bet won 533 euro ($656) and the second won 3,367 euro ($4,145).
