MLB Betting Free Pick: Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox

07.31.2012     01:39 PM     Teddy Covers     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Teddy Covers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Detroit (Verlander) -130 at Boston (Beckett) O/U 8
Recommendation: Detroit

Josh Beckett is still being priced like a front-of-the-rotation starter, despite the fact that he’s been largely ineffective since coming off the DL in June.  The Red Sox are just 1-7 in Beckett’s last eight trips to the hill.  In four July starts, opponents are hitting .330 against him and he’s got a 6.38 ERA.

Facing the potent Tigers lineup certainly isn’t a recipe for an immediate turnaround. Beckett’s faced them twice already this year and he got shelled both times: 11 earned runs, including five homers, on 17 hits in just 11.2 innings of work.  Boston lost those two games by a combined margin of 17-3.

Beckett ‘s recent quote doesn’t sound too confident, bad news for any starting hurler.  "Obviously the results aren't what Read more

College Football Gambling: Mississippi State Bulldogs Season Over/Under Wins

Mississippi State Bulldogs
Recommendation: Over 7.5 wins (+112 at Pinnacle, -125 at 5Dimes)

Mississippi State got a tough draw with having to play Alabama and LSU on the road but in my opinion the remainder of its schedule is very favorable – enough that I bet over 7.5 wins. In fact, while I like what Dan Mullen has been able to do during his three years in Starkville, and I am expecting them to field another solid club, the schedule is set up in a way that if this team matches their output of the last two seasons (a very reasonable request), eight wins or more is a really possibility.

It is likely that Mississippi State will be favored in each of its first seven games. I see wins vs. Jackson State, at Troy, vs. South Alabama, at Kentucky and vs. Middle Tennessee State. Home contests against Auburn and Tennessee will be lined in the -2.5/-3/-3.5 range. If MSU can at least split those two games, we remain in good position to get to eight wins.

The real season starts October 27, when MSU travels to Alabama. Asking for a win in Tuscaloosa is a lot, and I obviously don't project one but note that the Crimson Tide have what could Read more

PokerStars settles with DOJ, Full Tilt Poker players to be refunded

07.31.2012     12:06 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Press release on PokerStars' settlement with the United States Department of Justice. It appears that players from both PokerStars and Full Tilt Poker (which PS recently acquired) will be refunded shortly.

We plan to re-open the Full Tilt site and, most importantly, we will make available all funds for players outside the U.S. within 90 days of the formal close of the deal, which will occur in the next seven days. The money paid to the US Government will in part be used to reimburse former Full Tilt Poker customers in the United States, through a remission process to be administered by the Department of Justice.

Paying back Full Tilt players was a key component in our agreement to acquire the assets. This is not only important to the individual players who have had their bankrolls tied up for more than a year, but it's also vital to re-building trust in online poker and instilling confidence in the global poker economy.

NCAAF Betting News: New head coach, offensive coordinator and QB at Southern Miss

07.31.2012     11:02 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ellis Johnson is set to begin his first year as head coach at Southern Miss. Johnson most recently served as defensive coordinator at South Carolina and before that Mississippi State. Ellis originally hired Rickey Bustle (ULL HC, Tulane QB) to serve as offensive coordinator but health issues forced Bustle to reduce his role to running backs coach. Steve Buckley will now step in as OC after spending the last five seasons as a high school head coach. According to Buckley, USM will continue to utilize an up-tempo offense. Early reports indicate as many as five quarterbacks are vying for the starting gig.

"When he left with (former head coach Curley Hallman) and went to LSU, I was grooming him to be the next offensive coordinator," former USM coach Jeff Bower said. "He's a really good football coach. He has a good mind. I thought it was just a matter of time before that would happen."

"We're going to be a no-huddle, spread formation-oriented offense Read more

Sportsmemo Handicapper Alf Musketa's Olympic Betting Preview Part II

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are Olympic events/sports that you should not be betting. Gymnastics is a drama filled event with some of the best athletes on the planet, but unless you have/had a wager to win gold in the Artistic Team All-Around, I recommend passing on all of the other props. If you just watched the team all-around, it is clear that pressure to perform on such a massive stage can make you slip for just one second, lose your grip or have a mental lapse and that translates into one tenth of a point. That of course can be the difference between silver and fourth place. Great Britain, with the home crowd behind them, won bronze, the country’s first team gymnastic medal since 1912.

The USA Men's Team heading into the team all-Around was the 2nd or 3rd betting choice to medal, but their performances on pommel horse, rings, parallel bars and their best event the vault, was disastrous. They couldn't land on their feet, they stumbled multiple times and they couldn't function as a team nor as individuals. With the uncertainty of a small step out of bounds, a tiny lean on the balance beam, there is not one single gymnastic event bet that I can recommend at this Read more

Reality show plays part in MGM makeover

07.31.2012     07:52 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Interview with MGM Grand President Scott Sibella and how his experience on CBS's Undercover Boss helped spark the resort's $160 million makeover.

"The show has run six times, even though we did it a year-and-a-half ago," Sibella said. "It’s still something I talk about a lot. I’d only been here a couple of months, so I was getting to know the culture and the property."

I don’t want MGM to be a dormitory, which in the past it has been because of where it's located and the value of the rooms. So people would stay here, and I would have long taxi lines. I want to convert that to: You stay here and you never have to leave for the weekend.

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Detroit Tigers at Boston Red Sox

Detroit (Verlander) -125 at Boston (Beckett) O/U 8
Recommendation: Over

Pretty amazing to see yesterday's Detroit/Boston game lined at 9.5 (it went over) and tonight's a run and a half lower. The reason of course is that the combo of Max Scherzer and Clay Buchholz doesn't sound as dominant as Justin Verlander and Josh Beckett. And we all know, it is Verlander who is the key ingredient in this total being so low for Fenway. Verlander is always capable of being unhittable but there are some situations that make him a little-less human. For starters, teams facing him for a second time this season have had a good amount success. In second turns against Tampa, Cleveland, New York and Boston, Verlander's combined ERA is 6.04. In an earlier outing in Fenway, the Red Sox – who have as strong of home splits (.279/.340/.465/.805) as anyone in baseball – got to Verlander for five runs and 10 hits in six innings (both seasonal worsts). On the other side of the equation, we have Josh Read more
