SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Arizona vs. New Orleans -2.5 O/U 37

And here is our first Guess Who’s Playing Quarterback In The Fourth Quarter Of A Meaningless NFL Preseason Game blog! I can tell all you bettors out there are excited. New Orleans interim head coach Joe Vitt says the rotation will be similar to past years so bank on seeing Drew Brees take a few snaps, followed by some sort of Chase Daniels, Luke McCown and Sean Canfield combo.

Investors hint Romney, prediciton markets still lean Obama

08.03.2012     12:41 PM     Printer Friendly
According to some analysts, a recent stock market surge was a possible precursor to Mitt Romney earning the upcoming Presidential nomination. But some of the leading prediction markets aren't so sure. According to InTrade, President Obama is a 58.1% shot to be reelected while Romney sits at just under 40%. Pinnacle has Obama at a -156 favorite (roughly 61%) and Romeny at +144 (41%). And Nate Silver’s blog FiveThirtyEight shows a 70/30 split in favor of Obama.

According to Morgan Stanley chief US equity strategist Adam S. Parker, "[T]here is no other reason now to like stocks than a Romney win."

"The conclusion Parker draws is that investors are betting that Romney will unseat President Obama and bring a more business-friendly environment to the White House," In addition, Cox noted, "[h]istorically, Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Texas Rangers at Kansas City Royals

Texas (Harrison) -175 at Kansas City (Guthrie) O/U 9.5
Recommendation: Over

The Rangers went Over the total by themselves on Wednesday in their wild 11-10 thriller over the Angels.  They did it again last night, pounding out 15 runs against LA.  Big boppers Josh Hamilton, Elvis Andrus and Michael Young have all hit their way out of slumps during this span, putting the highest scoring team in the majors right back on track offensively after their post- All Star break doldrums.

That’s bad news for KC starter Jeremy Guthrie, who has been nothing short of awful this year.  Guthrie is 0-8 with a 7.76 ERA in his last 13 starts, including 0-2, 9.58 ERA since being traded to KC.  With 24 home runs allowed in just 101 innings of work, a hot night in Missouri (heat index of 102) isn’t likely to help him cool off the hottest lineup in the majors.

But KC is hitting these days, pounding out 26 runs in their last four ballgames; at least five in Read more

NFL Preseason Gambling: Tennessee's Hasselbeck outplays Locker in practice

08.03.2012     10:43 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Tennessee at Seattle -3 O/U 34

There was some talk that Tennessee's Jake Locker had a small lead over Matt Hasselbeck for the starting spot but local reports indicate the Hasselbeck is now the frontrunner. Hasselbeck looked very sharp during Thursday's practice while Locker struggled. Head coach Mike Munchak tried to downplay the disparity in performance. The Titans are +3 at Seattle for Week 1 of the preseason.

“I really don’t pay attention out here as far as who is doing where the ball is going because a lot of it is not the quarterback, a lot of it is the way guys are running routes,’’ coach Mike Munchak said. “There’s a lot of things that weight into it.

“If guys aren’t hitting what they want obviously they start pressing a little bit, but that is something that happens in this Read more

College Football Gambling: Oklahoma State not as stable along offensive line

08.03.2012     07:36 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Offensive line play has rarely been a problem at Oklahoma State. Since Mike Gundy arrived in 2005, the Cowboys averaged over 5.0 yards per carry five out of seven years and allowed just 34 sacks over the last three years. But a lot of last year's unit has since departed including three two-year starters – two of which were highly decorated. Gundy also announced that projected starting left tackle Michael Bowie was dismissed from the team. Bowie didn't start but played in every game last year. Interesting that OSU goes from an All-American left tackle that protected the blind side of a 28-year-old quarterback who ended up being a first round pick in the NFL draft to a back-up lineman trying to protect an 18-year-old first-year signal caller.

NCAAF Betting: UConn gives starting quarterback job to transfer

08.03.2012     06:27 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
When a starting quarterback returns but gets beat out by another player, we typically view that as a good sign. UConn's passing game was pretty weak last year with Johnny McEntee (51.3%, 12-8 TD-INT, 175.8 ypg) under center. So second-year head coach Paul Pasqualoni named JC transfer Chandler Whitmer his guy. Whitmer originally went to Illinois but wasn't going to see the field so transferred to Kansas' Butler CC where he threw for over 3,000 yards last season.

Washington moved from -12 to -14.5 vs. San Diego State. And Troy opened -3 at UAB but was bet up to -4.5.

College Football Betting: Minnesota tries to rebuild in Kill's second season

08.02.2012     02:00 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
It was a rough year for Minnesota's Jerry Kill. He struggled with his health and the fact that he probably had more talent to work with at Northern Illinois. Kill has a strong record of turning programs around. At Southern Illinois, he was 1-10 and 4-8 his first two seasons and then went on a 50-14 run. At Northern Illinois, he inherited a team off of a 2-10 season and got them to a bowl the very next year. He closed out his tenure in DeKalb with an 11-3 mark and a 27-point bowl victory. That dramatic of a turnaround in the Big Ten won't be as easy but Kill can coach and we expect there to be some improvements.

It looks as if the Golden Gophers are committing to MarQueis Gray at quarterback. He's been around the program for four years and while proving himself as a runner (966 yards) he's never really amounted to much as a passer (50% completition). According to offensive coordinator Matt Limegrover, the team is focused more on improving within the system rather that giving it a complete overhaul. As for Kill, he used the dreaded Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Florida Atlantic should be improved under Pelini

08.02.2012     01:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Let's be honest, if you need a stadium built Howard Schnellenberger is your guy. If you need to win football games and maintain a moderate level of success, it’s probably best to search elsewhere. Under Schnellenberger, Florida Atlantic transitioned quickly to the Sun Belt and peaked in 2007 and 2008 with back-to-back bowl berths. But then the program took a huge nose dive going 5-7, 4-8 and last season a woeful 1-11. Schnellenberger has since retired and the Owls scored former Nebraska defensive coordinator Carl Pelini. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that Pelini is looking for a quick turnaround so he can parlay it into a better coaching gig. As Schnellenger proved, there’s no better conference to do that than the Sun Belt. No question there is a lot of stink still left on the program but in the Sun Belt, playing hard and having discipline – two things FAU didn't do last season – is half the battle. New offense, new defense, new system to learn but FAU will be underdogs in nearly Read more

Houston Texans
After nearly a decade of trying to get over the hump, the Texans finally broke through last year, going 10-6, winning the AFC South and even winning a playoff game. All that despite an injury plagued season that saw many of their top players go down for extended stretches.

Houston was a money winner for their supporters, thanks to a 9-5-2 ATS mark.  They outgained their opponents by 0.9 yards per play, tied for second best in the NFL, and finished with a +7 turnover margin.  The Texans were an Under team in 2011, cashing at a 10-6 clip.

But before we get carried away with all of the success, let’s not ignore that the Texans beat up on a very weak slate of opponents.  Houston faced third easiest schedule in the NFL based on my numbers – numbers based on my power rating of their opponents for the week that the game was played.

2012 Issues: Houston has fairly good continuity from last year to this year.  Head coach Gary Kubiak and both coordinators return, most notably defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.  Phillips took a defense that had been ranked dead Read more

Over the past few years we've pointed out Oregon State's tendency to start slow and finish strong from both a straight up and against the spread perspective. Last season, bettors were once again treated to a slow start but because of youth and injuries, the Beavers never recovered. OSU returns 15 starters (9 last season) but the schedule is tough with non-conference games against Wisconsin and BYU. Here's an update on the Beavers heading into fall camp.

College Football Gambling: Texas A&M Aggies Season Over/Under Wins

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Texas A&M Aggies
Recommendation: Over 7 (+100 @ 5Dimes)

Texas A&M’s inaugural SEC season should be an interesting one. First-year head coach Kevin Sumlin brings his wide open, up-tempo offense into a conference that hasn’t seen much of that style of play. Typically, the better SEC teams have dominated high-octane attacks from other conferences, but there is often a tremendous gap in size and speed. That may not be the case with Texas A&M.

Despite having no experience at the quarterback position, Sumlin has a very good offensive line with four returning starters (95 career starts). That should help whoever earns the starting nod under center. Obviously they’ll be up against it when facing the likes of Alabama and LSU but against the rest of the SEC, the front line should hold up.

Defensively, the Aggies led the nation in sacks last year (51), but overall the unit was average at best. They allowed 30 points or more points six times and had trouble holding leads in close games. They lost two overtime games and also had losses of one, two and four points. That included a 42-38 loss to Arkansas – a Read more

NCAAF Handicapping: Texas Tech brings in fourth defensive coordinator in four years

08.02.2012     09:12 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Here are some audio links featuring Texas Tech offensive coordinator Neal Brown and defensive coordinator Art Kaufman. Like most of the Big XIII, scoring points wasn’t difficult for TTU last year (33.8 ppg). Brown does however have some concerns about the running game with a few guys coming back from ACL injuries. The bigger issue for TTU remains defense. Mike Leach's teams put up ridiculous offensive numbers but they had some underrated stop units during his tenure. Under Tommy Tuberville, they haven't been able to stop anyone (30.9 ppg, 456 ypg in 2010; 39.3 ppg, 486 ypg in 2011). As a result, Kaufman’s hire marks the program’s fourth DC in four years. One of Kaufman's biggest concerns heading into the season is lack of depth. Luckily for Kaufman, he’ll have plenty of extra “preseason” practice time with TTU facing Northwestern Read more

NFL Betting Notes: Pittsburgh, OC Haley giddy about no-huddle offense

08.02.2012     08:11 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
The Pittsburgh Steelers claim they will be using plenty of no-huddle under first-year offensive coordinator Todd Haley. Because what would an NFL offseason be like without over half the league saying it is going to throw deep, play up-tempo, spread the field, and/or go no-huddle.

“He’s shown the propensity to do that at a high level,” said Haley. “This is new to him, so we’re still working together on it. Ideally, if you have a quarterback like Roethlisberger and what he’s done, when he’s in full control, that’s a good situation to be in because he’s right in the middle of it, seeing what’s going on. There’s always communication at least in my experiences because we can communicate until the (play) clock gets to 15 (seconds).

“I could tell through the spring that Ben’s got his arms around it and he likes it. You can see his eyes light up a little bit when we get in that mode. That’s the sign of a great quarterback. The ones that I’ve been around, they Read more
