Leagues stand firm on sports betting

08.08.2012     01:37 PM     Printer Friendly
Editorial from the Star-Ledger on the hypocritical stance sports leagues have taken on gambling.

The major hypocrisy is here: every major league sports team in the United States and Canada has a hand in public money. Some governments foot the bill for building stadiums, others give sweetheart land leases, or tax breaks, or some or all. Tax dollars are used to improve roads and mass transit to ballparks.

NFL Preseason Betting: New York Jets may give first-team offense extended look

NY Jets at Cincinnati -1.5 O/U 34

The New York Jets will play their starters about a quarter during Friday's preseason opener at Cincinnati. The second-team is expected to play a half. Rex Ryan did hint that the first-team offense may get more playing time as they adjust to Tony Sparano’s offense. Tim Tebow will play a half but is unlikely to see work with the starters.

"It’s a new offense, and I think everyone needs reps," Ryan said. "That’s why, will we extend the first offense more than a quarter? We’ll see."

MLB Betting Trends: Mr. OVER Paul Emmel behind the plate in New York

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Umpire Paul Emmel is behind the plate tonight in New York. In case you've been living under a rock, 20 of Emmel's 21 games have gone over the total. Those contests averaged 11.5 runs which is tops in the league. What's odd is that prior to this season, Emmel was technically an "under" ump. From 2009-11, Emmel's games were 39-48-5 O/U.

NFL Preseason Handicapping: Jacksonville OC says passing game in weak

NY Giants at Jacksonville -1.5 O/U 35

Jacksonville Jaguars offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski provides an honest report of the current state of the team's passing game.

“There’s no doubt — our passing game right now is not very good,” Jaguars offensive coordinator Bob Bratkowski said Monday. “It starts with the protection, drops, running routes properly. When you stand on the sidelines, a lot of times it looks like the quarterback, but I’ll be honest with you: In many cases, the quarterback’s getting fooled, or he’s under pressure and having to make decisions faster than you want him to make. But we’ve got time. That’s why we’re practicing. It’s a work in progress.”

College Football Betting: Ball State offense should take off in 2012

08.08.2012     08:44 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Ball State has the look of one of the better offenses in the MAC heading into 2012. According to Phil Steele, the offensive line has over 100 career starters under its belt – one of the most experienced units in the country. They allowed only 11 sacks last season despite being 32nd nationally in pass attempts. Quarterback Keith Wenning is back after throwing for 2,786 yards, 19 TDs and 11 INTs as is the entire backfield. Head coach Pete Lembo begins his second season after a respectable 6-6 SU, 7-5 ATS mark in 2011.

“I expect the O-line to keep Keith up,” Holtz said. “I expect Keith to throw for yards and touchdowns. I expect the receivers to catch, and the running backs to run.

“We need to start reading defenses more and get more complex in the playbook,” Holtz said. “We know the basics, and now it’s time to dig a little deeper to get what we didn’t pick up last year.”

Update: New Jersey responds to sports betting lawsuit

08.08.2012     08:32 AM     Printer Friendly
UPDATE

New Jersey reacts to the lawsuit filed by the NFL and other sports organization that will try to stop the state from sponsoring legalized sports betting. Gov. Chris Christie noted that this issue is unlikely to keep New Jersey from hosting the 2014 Super Bowl.

“We knew this legal process was going to unfold,” Drazin said. “With it occurring now, this prevents a situation where we make investments to launch sports betting only to have it interrupted by a shutdown.”

“Let the games begin,” said Lesniak, a Democrat from Union County. “From the start, we wanted our day in court to prove that the federal ban on sports wagering is Read more

Baltimore at Atlanta -1.5 O/U 34

Baltimore's John Harbaugh said that the starters won't play more than a quarter during Thursday's preseason opener at Atlanta.

“It will be a standard first preseason game concept, so we’ll be looking at anywhere from a certain set number of plays to about a quarter, maybe a quarter-plus for some of the starters,” Harbaugh said. “Some guys won’t play at all. Some of the more senior veteran guys won’t play at all by design.”

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
As part of “Ian Cameron Capping” here at Sportsmemo, I will be providing Canadian Football League service for the remainder of the 2012 season. The CFL offers an under-the-radar betting opportunity that can be beaten with regularity by anyone willing to put in the work and the time to do so. I have a documented personal betting record of 15-10 for +9.52 units of profit so far this season using the same Sportsmemo 1, 1.5 and 2 unit betting scale. That includes a perfect 4-0 record on 2-unit best bets which are better known as 20* plays here at Sportsmemo.

With six weeks of the regular season already in the books, I felt I would take the opportunity to have my debut blog here at Sportsmemo be about what has taken place so far in the CFL season from a team by team perspective. I’ll include each team’s SU and ATS records as well as their Over/Under results. We’ll start with the teams in the East Division and then shift our focus to the West.

MLB Handicapping: Beckett ready to go, Red Sox cope with media circus

08.08.2012     07:51 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
No shortage of storylines in Boston these days. Where shall we start? How about Josh Beckett who was forced to skip his last start due to back stiffness. In the midst of explaining to the media that he's ready to pitch tonight, Beckett tried to shrug off questions about the team's alleged dysfunction.

“We traveled late in from New York (two nights before) and I didn't sleep particularly well, had a lot of anxiety and stress things going on, exterior distractions,” Beckett told WAAF. “I don’t think that a lot of it was great for my back. And going out and pitching on that mound, it was very wet, and my back just locked up on me."

On the notion that the Sox are like a dysfunctional family, Beckett insisted “it’s the exact opposite,” suggesting it is the media that creates that perception.

College Football Betting: Florida offense to look different under former Boise OC

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Florida enters 2012 with its third different offensive coordinator in three years. Brent Pease, who mostl recently served as Boise State's OC, is set to take over for Charlie Weis (HC Kansas). According to second-year head coach Will Muschamp, there will be some differences with the offense, most notably with formations.

Think lots of motion and shifts and “variations of formation” according to Muschamp.

“From an imagination standpoint, those would be the things that I would see that are going to be drastically different,’’ Muschamp said.

“I do want to complement our players on the retention from spring,’’ Muschamp said. “It was very evident in our first three days on both sides of the ball, which credits our players with the job they did this summer. We are far ahead, after three practices mind you, where we thought we would be at this point on both sides of the ball.

Not a lot of usable information coming out of Pullman these days with Mike Leach taking over at Washington State. There is no official depth chart. Here is an eye-witness account of a recent practice. The one thing we do know is Leach is trying to get as much talent on the field as possible – even if that means having players switch positions. Leach is also in the midst of doing some house cleaning with three defensive starters from last season dismissed from the team.

"Leach isn't playing around," cornerback Nolan Washington said. "We've got to be all in or you get kicked off.

College Football Betting: O-line overhaul for Oklahoma Sooners

08.07.2012     09:46 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Go to page 90 of your Phil Steele national preview. Under Oklahoma's offensive line analysis you'll notice two things that really stand out; "102 career starts" and "best o-line s/'08." It was a fair assessment considering what the unit looked like after spring practice. But according to reports out of Norman, things are looking a little different these days.

"It's unfortunate. It's really unfortunate," Shead said. "But we've just got to keep going. Gotta keep pushing."

"Yeah, it's rough. Obviously you can't prepare for that," Irwin said. "But what can you do? There's no reason to pout about it, sit around and feel sorry for ourselves. We've just got to do the best with what we have, and that's what we'll do."

"It's an opportunity for the next guy. That's how we've got to approach it," Patton said. "The guys are good with that. They understand. They're competitive. They want to play."

Facebook enters the world of online gambling

Facebook launched its first online gambling application where users in the UK can play for cash prizes. The game, Bingo Friendzy, looks like something your kids would play on Nintendo DS. But beyond the brightly colored cartoon characters lies a potentially groundbreaking moment in the world of online gambling.

“Gambling is very popular and well regulated in the U.K. … for millions of bingo users it’s already a social experience [so] it makes sense [for us] to offer that as well,” said Julien Codorniou, Facebook’s head of gaming for Europe, Middle East and Africa.

College Football Handicapping: Nebraska's Martinez predicts better passing game

08.07.2012     07:00 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Not one to lack any confidence, Nebraska quarterback Taylor Martinez boldly predicted that he will complete 70% of his passes this season. Only a junior, Martinez has 25 starts under his belt and while better with his feet, it is reasonable to think his accuracy (56% last season) will improve. The Cornhuskers ran the ball on nearly 68% of their plays in 2011 and are obviously looking for more balance.

“I'm capable of doing that every game if they gave me the chance to,” Martinez said, answering a later question about the loss to the Wildcats. “I've proved I can throw the ball against Oklahoma State and Northwestern. Whatever game we need to throw the ball, I'm capable of doing it.”

“We're just trying to utilize all our weapons,” senior wide receiver Tim Marlowe said. “Our running game was amazing ... but we know to be one of the best offenses in the country, we have to be 50/50. Especially on third downs, to complete passes to keep our long drives going, take the will out of people's Read more

NCAAF Betting Noews: Oregon Ducks reload at the quarterback position

08.07.2012     06:42 AM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Since Chip Kelly arrived in Eugene back in 2007, quarterback play has rarely been an issue for the Oregon Ducks. He's had three starters (Dennis Dixon, Jeremiah Masoli and Darron Thomas) and all them thrived in his high-octane offense. A lot of that success came as a result of the tremendous offensive lines the Ducks routinely pumped out (3 starters and 65 career starts back this season). Heading into 2012, Kelly is faced with breaking in yet another signal caller. The race is between sophomore Bryan Bennett and redshirt freshman Marcus Mariota. Bennett played in eight games last season (369 yards, 6 TDs, 0 INTs) while Mariota performed well during spring practice.

“I’m not opposed to playing two quarterbacks,” Kelly said. “Everywhere I’ve been it’s always shaken itself out that one kid has emerged.”

“It doesn’t really benefit us to anoint somebody today,” Kelly said. “We really need to get them to understand that there’s Read more
