NFL Preseason Gambling: Frazier taking wait-and-see approach with Vikings first unit

Minnesota at San Francisco -3 O/U 34

Minnesota head coach Leslie Frazier talks about what he expects from his starting unit tonight in San Francisco.

"I have talked to them about if they score in that first drive what it would mean, but we do have a number," Frazier said. "We are going to talk to them about it, but some of it will be dictated by how we perform early on. We have an idea for the maximum of what we want for participation from an offensive and defensive standpoint."

"We do want them to try to get some live work so we can get a feel for where they are and how far we will need to get before the next ball game," he said.

Minnesota at San Francisco -3 O/U 34

San Francisco head coach Jim Harbaugh answers questions about tonight's preseason opener against Minnesota.

What do you hope to see out of that starting unit?

“Well, individually, collectively, all those things, you want to see the units play well as a group. Then there’s a lot of exciting individual play that we’ll be keying on, and excited to watch those guys compete.”

Do you put more emphasis, more evaluation, on these games? Or is it just an equal part of the puzzle as a normal three-hour padded practice out there?

“It’s a game. The score board’s lit up. We put a lot of value on everything we do. But, definitely the games are heightened, fun, competitive, and it’s highest output for a football player… But you Read more

Arizona at Kansas City -2.5 O/U 34.5

After a lackluster performance against New Orleans in the Hall of Fame game, the Arizona Cardinals are hoping for a better showing tonight in Kansas City. Quarterback John Skelton is expected to start.

"Here's what the biggest concern was for me," defensive coordinator Ray Horton said. "With what I call our starters, our first and second groups, that's where the most of errors were.

"Were they too hyped up? Well, I hope not, they were veterans playing in a preseason game."

"I think the (fourth) drive in the game the other day, where we went 90 yards, that's what we're looking for," Whisenhunt said. "If we can get some of those kinds of drives in the preseason, it will hopefully give us the confidence we can Read more

Kansas City head coach Romeo Crennel with a serious tone in regards to what he expects from his starters tonight.

“I told them to be ready to play however long I needed them,” Crennel said. “I didn’t know how long that might be. The only consideration will be if there’s someone who might have a little nagging injury or something like that, I may take that into consideration and not give them as much playing time.

“I want them to get ready to play. I don’t want them going into the game thinking, ‘OK, I’m going to come out after the first quarter’ or ‘I’m only going to play a series.’ Just be ready to play, and we’ll see how long it is.’’

Tampa Bay at Miami -3 O/U 33.5

News and notes on the Miami Dolphins as they kick off the Joe Philbin era tonight at home against Tampa Bay. The quarterback trio of David Garrard, Matt Moore, and Ryan Tannehill looks above average by preseason standards – and the starting job remains undecided.

As far as Philbin's gameplan, he said he's looking for the starters to put together a scoring drive and if that doesn't occur, they may get a second chance. The first-string defense will play 3-4 series.

NFL clears female referee for action despite WSOP appearance

08.09.2012     03:12 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Good news. The NFL just gave the thumbs up to gambling! OK, not exactly. But they stepped in and said (we're paraphrasing) that groundbreaking replacement referee Shannon Eastin isn’t corrupt and likely won't fix tonight’s Green Bay-San Diego game despite her participation in the World Series of Poker. It was the NFL Referees Association – AKA, the dudes on strike, who probably aren't big fans of the fill-ins – who brought the non-issue to light.

NFL Preseason Gambling Tips: Preseason and Regular Season Matchups

08.09.2012     02:32 PM     Rob Veno     Printer Friendly
Submitted by Rob Veno

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There are a handful of standard recommendations on how to approach wagering on NFL Preseason games.

1. Check for quarterback depth.
2. Find ATS results on the head coaches to determine which ones care about winning which ones don’t.
3. Look for teams with heated quarterback battles.
4. Dig for information on what a head coach’s intentions are in each contest.
5. Be aware of first-year head coaches placing extra emphasis on games because they are trying to instill a winning attitude.

All of those are extremely important but also universally known by anyone who considers themselves of serious bettor.

In this piece I’m going to add one more angle that I like to look for in addition to the above checklist. The preseason can be a very “vanilla” time of year as coaching staffs more often than not choose to reveal very little about their playbooks. With the exception of the Week 3 dress rehearsal game, most head coaches are evaluating personnel and not strategically game planning for opponents. This bland style frequently becomes even more so when teams playing in the preseason also meet during the Read more

College Football Handicapping: Iowa adjusting to new offensive coordinator

08.09.2012     01:14 PM     Printer Friendly
SportsMemo.com blog entry.
There were times last season when Iowa's offense was fairly explosive. They used the no-huddle in early season victories over Pittsburgh and UL-Monroe but when it was all said and done, the Hawkeyes were just another mediocre Big Ten offense. Quarterback James Vandenberg returns for his senior season but will have to adjust to a new offensive coordinator and new system. Longtime OC Ken O'Keefe moved on to the NFL and Kirk Ferentz brought in former Texas OC Greg Davis. According to reports, Davis runs what is called a "West Coast Hybrid" offense. The Hawkeyes will have plenty of opportunity to break in their new offense as the front half of the schedule is loaded with teams who struggled defensively last season: Iowa State (95th nationally total defense), Northern Illinois (88th), Central Michigan (96th) and Read more

Houston at Carolina -3 O/U 35.5

Houston head coach Gary Kubiak said that his starters will see limited playing time during Saturday’s preseason opener at Carolina. Expect to see quarterbacks John Beck and Case Keenum in the second half.

"We need to see them all play," said Kubiak. "It’s obviously to play our ones for about 12 to 15 plays. Play our twos for a good quarter and a half, maybe a little more; and then player threes, a quarter and a half or maybe just the fourth quarter."

Denver Broncos
Last year, in John Fox’s first season at the helm in Denver, the Broncos got hot down the stretch, in large part due to some Tim Tebow magic, and won the division with an 8-8 record (7-9 ATS, 9-7 to the Over).  They faced a schedule that was right around the league average in terms of toughness, yet were outgained by 0.4 yards per play while finishing -12 in turnovers.

2012 Issues: Fox returns as the head coach, as does offensive coordinator Mike McCoy, but the Broncos have a new defensive coordinator; former Jaguars head coach Jack Del Rio.  Del Rio served at the same position under Fox in Carolina prior to his ascension in Jacksonville.

But nobody in Denver is talking about the coaching staff – they’re talking about Peyton Manning.  Manning is 36 years old, coming off a lost season and four neck surgeries.  He’ll be throwing to a largely unproven group of receivers – no WR on the squad has more than 124 career catches.  And Denver doesn’t have much of a Plan B if Manning doesn’t work out – backup Caleb Hanie was nothing short of a Read more

NFL Preseason Betting Pick: Green Bay Packers at San Diego Chargers

SportsMemo.com blog entry.
Green Bay at San Diego -2.5 O/U 37.5
Recommendation: Under

Sure, in the regular season, these two offenses would likely be more than capable of lighting up the scoreboard. But here in the preseason, there’s absolutely no reason to expect a high octane shootout.

Green Bay’s defense was nothing short of awful last year, struggling to put pressure on opposing quarterbacks and come up with key third down stops on defense. In fact, the Packers ranked dead last defensively in the NFL, allowing a league high 299.8 passing yards per game and a league high 411.6 total yards per game. What do you think the Packers spent the offseason and training camp concentrating on?

The Chargers, too, were a defensive sieve a year ago, allowing an NFL worst 49% third down conversions. They’ve got a new defensive coordinator and a stop unit with something to prove right from the get-go this August.

Both teams have much weaker QB rotations this year than in Read more

MLB Handicapper Free Play: Arizona Diamonbacks at Pittsburgh Pirates

Arizona (Saunders) at Pittsburgh (Rodriguez) -125 O/U 8
Recommendation: Under

PNC Park has been a cash cow for UNDERS this season at 16-34-2 O/U. The Pirates had a big offensive surge from mid-June to mid-July that saw then average over six runs per game. They've since come back down to earth, averaging about four runs over their last 19 games. And during that stretch, the scores at PNC Park have been extremely low with outputs of 7, 6, 3, 2, 6, 5, 4, 14 and 13. Note that the last two games were aided by unearned runs and a few bullpen meltdowns. The lefty vs. lefty matchup at PNC Park is one that I have been consistently betting UNDER the last few years. Game 1 of this series featured southpaws Wade Miley and Erik Bedard and the end result was just four runs. Wandy Rodriguez has thrown back-to-back quality starts since coming over from Houston. I think his curveball is a good matchup against some of Arizona's dead fastball hitters. Joe Saunders continues to amaze despite marginal Read more

Philadelphia's gameplan looks to be Michael Vick and the starters for the first quarter followed by Mike Kafka and the second unit. In the second half, expect to see rookie Nick Foles and Trent Edwards. Note that the Steelers will be testing out the waters under new offensive coordinator Todd Haley as well as starting two rookie offensive linemen. Reports indicate that backup Jerrod Johnson will get an extended look in the second half.

Nothing out of the ordinary for Week 1 of the preseason but the Atlanta Falcons don't appear very focused on the Baltimore Ravens.

“Philosophically, we just felt like we need to evaluate guys in this first preseason game,” Smith said. “Go back to the first year we were here, we were working to try and figure out who was going to be on our 53-man roster.”

“All of this stuff is good in terms of practice,” Smith said Tuesday. “We’re going to get to see how these guys perform under the lights.”

Sports betting operation busted, movie script magically appears

08.09.2012     06:58 AM     Printer Friendly
So the daughter of Philadelphia's late mayor Phil Rizzo was busted for her role in an offshore sports betting operation that was run by her husband. Is the incident interesting? A little bit. But it really takes a back seat to the crazy amount of illegal gambling clichés that get nailed in the story. Alright, let’s get the obvious out of the way and point out that everyone involved has a name that ends in a vowel: "Rizzo", "Mastronardo", "Joe Vito", and "Battista.” Next, storing money in a shoebox or safe or even the floorboards would be WAY too vanilla so instead, it was placed in PVC pipe in the backyard. And then of course there are the Feds and their over-the-top one-liners, "...had tentacles spreading across the U.S. and beyond." and "These defendants tried to ‘game' the system," she said. "Today, they crapped out." Last but not least, you can’t have a Read more

Good preview of tonight's Denver at Chicago preseason opener.

“It’s serious business out there on Thursday,” Peyton Manning said. “There’s jobs being competed for, there’s jobs that people are trying to keep. That’s where all of us have something to play for. Sure, you want to win the game, but everybody’s competing, trying to do their jobs well.”

“You don’t play the game to hurt anyone, but it’s a physical game,” Bears coach Lovie Smith said. “Our pass rushers want to get to the quarterback, whoever he is.”
